1 I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure”; but surely, this also was vanity.

¶ Dije yo también en mi corazón: Ven ahora, te probaré con alegría, y gozarás de bienes. Mas he aquí esto también era vanidad.

2 I said of laughter—“Madness!”; and of mirth, “What does it accomplish?”

A la risa dije: Enloqueces; y al placer: ¿De qué sirve esto?

3 I searched in my heart how to gratify my flesh with wine, while guiding my heart with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the sons of men to do under heaven all the days of their lives.

Propuse en mi corazón agasajar mi carne con vino, y que mi corazón anduviera en sabiduría, y retuviera la locura, hasta ver cuál fuera el bien de los hijos de los hombres, en el cual se ocuparan debajo del cielo todos los días de su vida.

4 I made my works great, I built myself houses, and planted myself vineyards.

Engrandecí mis obras, edifiqué para mí casas, planté para mí viñas;

5 I made myself gardens and orchards, and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.

me hice huertos y jardines, y planté en ellos árboles de todos frutos.

6 I made myself water pools from which to water the growing trees of the grove.

Me hice estanques de aguas, para regar de ellos el bosque donde crecían los árboles.

7 I acquired male and female servants, and had servants born in my house. Yes, I had greater possessions of herds and flocks than all who were in Jerusalem before me.

Poseí siervos y siervas, y tuve hijos de familia; también tuve posesión grande de vacas y ovejas, sobre todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalén.

8 I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the special treasures of kings and of the provinces. I acquired male and female singers, the delights of the sons of men, and musical instruments of all kinds.

Amontoné también plata y oro, y tesoro preciado de reyes y de provincias; me hice de cantores y cantoras, y todos los deleites de los hijos de los hombres, instrumentos músicos y de todas suertes.

9 S o I became great and excelled more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me.

Y fui engrandecido, y aumentado más que todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalén; a más de esto perseveró conmigo mi sabiduría.

10 W hatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, For my heart rejoiced in all my labor; And this was my reward from all my labor.

No negué a mis ojos ninguna cosa que desearan, ni aparté mi corazón de placer alguno, porque mi corazón gozó de todo mi trabajo; y esta fue mi parte de toda mi faena.

11 T hen I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun. The End of the Wise and the Fool

Al fin miré yo todas las obras que habían hecho mis manos, y el trabajo que tomé para hacerlas; y he aquí, todo vanidad y aflicción de espíritu, y sin provecho debajo del sol.

12 T hen I turned myself to consider wisdom and madness and folly; For what can the man do who succeeds the king?— Only what he has already done.

¶ Después volví yo a mirar para ver la sabiduría, y los desvaríos; y la locura (porque ¿qué hombre hay que pueda seguir al rey en lo que ya hicieron?)

13 T hen I saw that wisdom excels folly As light excels darkness.

Y he visto que la sabiduría sobrepasa a la locura, como la luz a las tinieblas.

14 T he wise man’s eyes are in his head, But the fool walks in darkness. Yet I myself perceived That the same event happens to them all.

El sabio tiene sus ojos en su cabeza, mas el loco anda en tinieblas. Y también entendí yo que un mismo suceso acaecerá al uno que al otro.

15 S o I said in my heart, “As it happens to the fool, It also happens to me, And why was I then more wise?” Then I said in my heart, “This also is vanity.”

Entonces dije yo en mi corazón: Como sucederá al loco me sucederá también a mí. ¿Para qué pues he trabajado hasta ahora por hacerme más sabio? Y dije en mi corazón, que también esto era vanidad.

16 F or there is no more remembrance of the wise than of the fool forever, Since all that now is will be forgotten in the days to come. And how does a wise man die? As the fool!

Porque ni del sabio ni del loco habrá memoria para siempre; pues en los días venideros ya todo será olvidado, y también morirá el sabio como el loco.

17 T herefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

¶ Aborrecí por tanto la vida, porque toda obra que se hace debajo del sol me era fastidiosa; por cuanto todo era vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

18 T hen I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.

Yo asimismo aborrecí todo mi trabajo que había puesto por obra debajo del sol; el cual dejaré a otro que vendrá después de mí.

19 A nd who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

¿Y quién sabe si será sabio, o loco, el que se enseñoreará de todo mi trabajo en que me hice sabio debajo del sol? Esto también es vanidad.

20 T herefore I turned my heart and despaired of all the labor in which I had toiled under the sun.

Volvió, por tanto, a desesperanzarse mi corazón acerca de todo el trabajo en que trabajé, y en que me hice sabio debajo del sol.

21 F or there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his heritage to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.

¡Que el hombre trabaje con sabiduría, y con ciencia, y con rectitud, y que haya de dar su hacienda a hombre que nunca trabajó en ello! También es esto vanidad y mal grande.

22 F or what has man for all his labor, and for the striving of his heart with which he has toiled under the sun?

Porque ¿qué tiene el hombre de todo su trabajo, y fatiga de su corazón, en que él trabajó debajo del sol?

23 F or all his days are sorrowful, and his work burdensome; even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.

Porque todos sus días no son sino dolores, y sus ocupaciones molestias; aun de noche su corazón no reposa. Esto también es vanidad.

24 N othing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.

No hay cosa mejor para el hombre sino que coma y beba, y que su alma vea el bien de su trabajo. También he visto que esto es de la mano de Dios.

25 F or who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, more than I?

Porque ¿quién comerá, y quién se cuidará, mejor que yo?

26 F or God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Porque al hombre que es bueno delante de Dios, él le da sabiduría y ciencia y alegría, mas al pecador le dio la ocupación de que recoja y amontone, para que dé al bueno delante de él. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.
