1 T hen we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as Yahweh spoke to me; and we encircled Mount Seir many days.

«Poi tornammo indietro e partimmo per il deserto in direzione del mar Rosso, come il Signore mi aveva detto, e girammo intorno al monte Seir per lungo tempo.

2 Y ahweh spoke to me, saying,

Il Signore mi disse:

3 “ You have encircled this mountain long enough. Turn northward.

“Avete girato abbastanza intorno a questo monte; volgetevi verso settentrione.

4 C ommand the people, saying, ‘You are to pass through the border of your brothers the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore be careful.

Da’ quest’ordine al popolo: ‘Voi state per passare i confini dei figli di Esaù, vostri fratelli, che abitano in Seir; essi avranno paura di voi; state quindi bene in guardia,

5 D on’t contend with them; for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on; because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.

non muovete loro guerra, poiché del loro paese io non vi darò neppure quanto ne può calcare un piede, perché ho dato il monte Seir a Esaù come sua proprietà.

6 Y ou shall purchase food from them for money, that you may eat. You shall also buy water from them for money, that you may drink.’”

Comprerete da loro con denaro contante le vettovaglie che mangerete, e comprerete pure da loro con denaro persino l’acqua che berrete.

7 F or Yahweh your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years, Yahweh your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.

Poiché il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti ha benedetto in tutta l’opera delle tue mani, ti ha seguito nel tuo viaggio attraverso questo grande deserto; il Signore, il tuo Dio, è stato con te durante questi quarant’anni e non ti è mancato nulla’”.

8 S o we passed by from our brothers the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion Geber. We turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

Così passammo, lasciando a distanza i figli di Esaù, nostri fratelli, che abitano in Seir, ed evitando la via della pianura, come pure Elat ed Esion-Gheber. Poi ci voltammo e ci incamminammo verso il deserto di Moab.

9 Y ahweh said to me, “Don’t bother Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give you any of his land for a possession; because I have given Ar to the children of Lot for a possession.”

«Il Signore mi disse: “Non attaccare Moab e non muovergli guerra, perché io non ti darò nulla da possedere nel suo paese, poiché ho dato Ar ai figli di Lot, come loro proprietà.

10 ( The Emim lived therein before, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim.

Prima vi abitavano gli Emim: popolo grande, numeroso, alto di statura come gli Anachiti.

11 T hese also are considered to be Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.

Erano anch’essi considerati come Refaim, al pari degli Anachiti, ma i Moabiti li chiamavano Emim.

12 T he Horites also lived in Seir before, but the children of Esau succeeded them. They destroyed them from before them, and lived in their place; as Israel did to the land of his possession, which Yahweh gave to them.)

Anche Seir era prima abitata dai Corei, ma i figli di Esaù li cacciarono, li distrussero e si stabilirono al loro posto, come ha fatto Israele nel paese che possiede e che il Signore gli ha dato.

13 “ Now rise up, and cross over the brook Zered.” We went over the brook Zered.

Ora alzatevi e passate il torrente di Zered”. E noi passammo il torrente di Zered.

14 T he days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea, until we had come over the brook Zered, were thirty-eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as Yahweh swore to them.

Il tempo delle nostre marce, da Cades-Barnea al passaggio del torrente di Zered, fu di trentotto anni, finché tutta quella generazione di guerrieri scomparve interamente dall’accampamento, come il Signore aveva loro giurato.

15 M oreover Yahweh’s hand was against them, to destroy them from the middle of the camp, until they were consumed.

Infatti la mano del Signore fu contro di loro per sterminarli dall’accampamento, finché furono scomparsi del tutto.

16 S o, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

Quando la morte ebbe fatto scomparire tutti quei guerrieri,

17 Y ahweh spoke to me, saying,

il Signore mi disse:

18 “ You are to pass over Ar, the border of Moab, today.

“Oggi tu stai per passare i confini di Moab, ad Ar, e ti avvicinerai ai figli di Ammon.

19 W hen you come near the border of the children of Ammon, don’t bother them, nor contend with them; for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession; because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.”

Non attaccarli e non muover loro guerra, perché io non ti darò nulla da possedere nel paese degli Ammoniti: io l’ho dato ai figli di Lot, come loro proprietà.

20 ( That also is considered a land of Rephaim: Rephaim lived there before; but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,

Anche questo era considerato come un paese dei Refaim. Anticamente vi abitavano dei Refaim, ma gli Ammoniti li chiamavano Zamzummim:

21 a great people, many, and tall, as the Anakim; but Yahweh destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place;

popolo grande, numeroso, alto di statura come gli Anachiti, ma il Signore li distrusse davanti agli Ammoniti, che li scacciarono e si stabilirono al loro posto.

22 a s he did for the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place even to this day:

Così il Signore aveva fatto per i figli di Esaù che abitano in Seir, quando distrusse i Corei davanti a loro; essi li scacciarono e si stabilirono al loro posto e vi sono rimasti fino al giorno d’oggi.

23 a nd the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and lived in their place.)

Anche gli Avvei, che abitavano in villaggi fino a Gaza, furono distrutti dai Caftorei, usciti da Caftor, i quali si stabilirono al loro posto.

24 “ Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon: behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

Alzatevi, partite e oltrepassate la valle dell’Arnon; ecco, io do in tuo potere Sicon l’Amoreo, re di Chesbon, e il suo paese; comincia a prenderne possesso e muovigli guerra.

25 T oday I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole sky, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of you.”

Oggi comincerò a ispirare paura e terrore di te a tutti i popoli che sono sotto il cielo, i quali, all’udire la tua fama, tremeranno e saranno presi d’angoscia per causa tua”. Conquista del regno di Sicon

26 I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

«Allora dal deserto di Chedemot mandai ambasciatori a Sicon, re di Chesbon, con parole di pace, e gli feci dire:

27 “ Let me pass through your land. I will go along by the highway, I will turn neither to the right hand nor to the left.

“Lasciami passare per il tuo paese; io camminerò per la strada maestra, senza girare né a destra né a sinistra.

28 Y ou shall sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink. Just let me pass through on my feet,

Tu mi venderai per denaro contante i cibi che mangerò, e mi darai per denaro contante l’acqua che berrò; permettimi semplicemente il transito,

29 a s the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me; until I pass over the Jordan into the land which Yahweh our God gives us.”

come hanno fatto i figli di Esaù che abitano in Seir e i Moabiti che abitano in Ar, finché io abbia passato il Giordano per entrare nel paese che il Signore, il nostro Dio, ci dà”.

30 B ut Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for Yahweh your God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today.

Ma Sicon, re di Chesbon, non volle lasciarci passare per il suo paese, perché il Signore, il tuo Dio, gli aveva indurito lo spirito e reso ostinato il cuore, per metterlo nelle tue mani, come oggi puoi vedere.

31 Y ahweh said to me, “Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before you. Begin to possess, that you may inherit his land.”

Il Signore mi disse: “Vedi, ho iniziato a dare in tuo potere Sicon e il suo paese; comincia la conquista, impadronisciti del suo paese”.

32 T hen Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz.

Allora Sicon uscì contro di noi con tutta la sua gente, per darci battaglia a Iaas.

33 Y ahweh our God delivered him up before us; and we struck him, his sons, and all his people.

E il Signore, il nostro Dio, lo diede nelle nostre mani, e noi abbiamo sconfitto lui, i suoi figli e tutta la sua gente.

34 W e took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones. We left no one remaining.

In quel tempo prendemmo tutte le sue città e le votammo allo sterminio: uomini, donne, bambini; non vi lasciammo nessuno in vita.

35 O nly the livestock we took for plunder for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities which we had taken.

Ma riservammo come nostra preda il bestiame e le spoglie delle città che avevamo prese.

36 F rom Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the valley, even to Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. Yahweh our God delivered up all before us.

Da Aroer, che è all’inizio della valle dell’Arnon, e dalla città che è nella valle, fino a Galaad, non ci furono città troppo forti per noi: il Signore, il nostro Dio, le diede tutte in nostro potere.

37 O nly to the land of the children of Ammon you didn’t come near; all the banks of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill country, and wherever Yahweh our God forbade us.

Ma non ti avvicinasti al paese dei figli di Ammon, a nessuno dei posti toccati dal torrente Iabboc, né alle città della zona montuosa, né ai luoghi che il Signore, il nostro Dio, ci aveva proibiti di attaccare.
