1 S amson went to Gaza, and saw there a prostitute, and went in to her.

Sansone andò a Gaza, vide là una prostituta ed entrò da lei.

2 T he Gazites were told, “Samson is here!” They surrounded him, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, “Wait until morning light, then we will kill him.”

Fu detto a quelli di Gaza: «Sansone è venuto qua». Essi lo circondarono, stettero in agguato tutta la notte presso la porta della città e tutta quella notte rimasero quieti e dissero: «Allo spuntar del giorno l’uccideremo».

3 S amson lay until midnight, and arose at midnight, and laid hold of the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and plucked them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron.

Sansone rimase a letto fino a mezzanotte; e a mezzanotte si alzò, afferrò i battenti della porta della città e i due stipiti, li divelse insieme con la sbarra, se li mise sulle spalle e li portò in cima al monte che è di fronte a Ebron.

4 I t came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.

Dopo questo si innamorò di una donna della valle di Sorec, che si chiamava Dalila.

5 T he lords of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, “Entice him, and see in which his great strength lies, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver.”

I prìncipi dei Filistei salirono da lei e le dissero: «Tentalo, e vedi da dove viene quella sua gran forza, e come potremmo prevalere contro di lui per giungere a legarlo e a domarlo; e ti daremo ciascuno millecento sicli d’argento».

6 D elilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies, and what you might be bound to afflict you.”

Dalila dunque disse a Sansone: «Dimmi, ti prego, da dove viene la tua gran forza e in che modo ti si potrebbe legare per domarti».

7 S amson said to her, “If they bind me with seven green cords that were never dried, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.”

Sansone le rispose: «Se mi si legasse con sette corde d’arco fresche, non ancora secche, io diventerei debole e sarei come un uomo qualsiasi».

8 T hen the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green cords which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.

Allora i prìncipi dei Filistei le portarono sette corde d’arco fresche, non ancora secche e lei lo legò con esse.

9 N ow she had an ambush waiting in the inner room. She said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” He broke the cords, as a string of tow is broken when it touches the fire. So his strength was not known.

C’era gente che stava in agguato, da lei, in una camera interna. Lei gli disse: «Sansone, i Filistei ti sono addosso!» Egli ruppe le corde, come un filo di stoppa si rompe quando sente il fuoco. Così il segreto della sua forza rimase sconosciuto.

10 D elilah said to Samson, “Behold, you have mocked me, and told me lies: now please tell me with which you might be bound.”

Poi Dalila disse a Sansone: «Ecco, tu mi hai beffata e mi hai detto delle bugie; ora dimmi, ti prego, con che cosa ti si potrebbe legare».

11 H e said to her, “If they only bind me with new ropes with which no work has been done, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.”

Egli le rispose: «Se mi si legasse con funi nuove che non fossero ancora state adoperate, io diventerei debole e sarei come un uomo qualsiasi».

12 S o Delilah took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” The ambush was waiting in the inner room. He broke them off his arms like a thread.

Dalila dunque prese delle funi nuove, lo legò e gli disse: «Sansone, i Filistei ti sono addosso!» C’era gente in agguato nella camera interna. Egli ruppe, come un filo, le funi che aveva alle braccia.

13 D elilah said to Samson, “Until now, you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me with what you might be bound.” He said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web.”

Dalila disse a Sansone: «Fino ad ora tu mi hai beffata e mi hai detto delle bugie; dimmi con che ti si potrebbe legare». Egli le rispose: «Se tesserai le sette trecce del mio capo con il tuo telaio».

14 S he fastened it with the pin, and said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” He awakened out of his sleep, and plucked away the pin of the beam, and the web.

Lei le fissò al subbio, poi gli disse: «Sansone, i Filistei ti sono addosso!» Ma egli si svegliò dal sonno e strappò via il subbio del telaio con l’ordito.

15 S he said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and have not told me where your great strength lies.”

Lei gli disse: «Come fai a dirmi: “Ti amo”, mentre il tuo cuore non è con me? Già tre volte mi hai beffata e non mi hai detto da dove viene la tua gran forza».

16 W hen she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, his soul was troubled to death.

La donna faceva ogni giorno pressione su di lui con le sue parole e lo tormentava. Egli ne fu rattristato a morte

17 H e told her all his heart, and said to her, “No razor has ever come on my head; for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me, and I will become weak, and be like any other man.”

e le aperse tutto il suo cuore e le disse: «Non è mai passato rasoio sulla mia testa, perché sono un nazireo, consacrato a Dio, dal seno di mia madre; se mi tagliassero i capelli, la mia forza se ne andrebbe, diventerei debole e sarei come un uomo qualsiasi».

18 W hen Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up this once, for he has told me all his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money in their hand.

Dalila, visto che egli le aveva aperto tutto il suo cuore, mandò a chiamare i prìncipi dei Filistei e fece dire loro: «Venite su, questa volta, perché egli mi ha aperto tutto il suo cuore». Allora i prìncipi dei Filistei salirono da lei e portarono con sé il denaro.

19 S he made him sleep on her knees; and she called for a man, and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.

Lei lo fece addormentare sulle sue ginocchia, chiamò un uomo e gli fece tagliare le sette trecce della testa di Sansone; così giunse a domarlo; e la sua forza lo lasciò.

20 S he said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” He awoke out of his sleep, and said, “I will go out as at other times, and shake myself free.” But he didn’t know that Yahweh had departed from him.

Allora lei gli disse: «Sansone, i Filistei ti sono addosso!» Egli, svegliatosi dal sonno, disse: «Io ne uscirò come le altre volte, e mi libererò». Ma non sapeva che il Signore si era ritirato da lui.

21 T he Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he ground at the mill in the prison.

I Filistei lo presero e gli cavarono gli occhi; lo fecero scendere a Gaza e lo legarono con catene di bronzo. Ed egli girava la macina nella prigione. Morte di Sansone

22 H owever the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaved.

Intanto, la capigliatura che gli avevano tagliata cominciava a ricrescergli.

23 T he lords of the Philistines gathered them together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, “Our god has delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.”

Ora i prìncipi dei Filistei si radunarono per offrire un grande sacrificio a Dagon, loro dio, e per rallegrarsi. Dicevano: «Il nostro dio ci ha dato nelle mani Sansone, nostro nemico.

24 W hen the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, “Our god has delivered our enemy and the destroyer of our country, who has slain many of us, into our hand.”

Quando il popolo lo vide, cominciò a lodare il suo dio e a dire: «Il nostro dio ci ha dato nelle mani il nostro nemico, colui che ci devastava il paese e che ha ucciso tanti di noi».

25 W hen their hearts were merry, they said, “Call for Samson, that he may entertain us.” They called for Samson out of the prison; and he performed before them. They set him between the pillars;

Nella gioia del loro cuore, dissero: «Chiamate Sansone, ché ci faccia divertire!» Fecero quindi uscire Sansone dalla prigione ed egli si mise a fare il buffone in loro presenza. Lo posero fra le colonne;

26 a nd Samson said to the boy who held him by the hand, “Allow me to feel the pillars whereupon the house rests, that I may lean on them.”

Sansone disse al ragazzo che lo teneva per mano: «Lasciami, che io possa toccare le colonne sulle quali poggia la casa e mi appoggi a esse».

27 N ow the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were on the roof about three thousand men and women, who saw while Samson performed.

La casa era piena di uomini e donne, e tutti i prìncipi dei Filistei erano lì; c’erano sul tetto circa tremila persone, fra uomini e donne, che stavano a guardare mentre Sansone faceva il buffone.

28 S amson called to Yahweh, and said, “Lord Yahweh, remember me, please, and strengthen me, please, only this once, God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.”

Allora Sansone invocò il Signore e disse: «Signore, Dio, ti prego, ricòrdati di me! Dammi forza per questa volta soltanto, o Dio, perché io mi vendichi in un colpo solo dei Filistei, per la perdita dei miei due occhi».

29 S amson took hold of the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and leaned on them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left.

Sansone tastò le due colonne di mezzo che sostenevano la casa; si appoggiò a esse: all’una con la destra, all’altra con la sinistra e disse:

30 S amson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” He bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell on the lords, and on all the people who were therein. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than those who he killed in his life.

«Che io muoia insieme con i Filistei!» Si curvò con tutta la sua forza e la casa crollò addosso ai prìncipi e a tutto il popolo che c’era dentro; così quelli che uccise mentre moriva furono di più di quanti ne aveva uccisi durante la sua vita.

31 T hen his brothers and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burial site of Manoah his father. He judged Israel twenty years.

Poi i suoi fratelli e tutta la casa di suo padre scesero e lo portarono via; quindi risalirono e lo seppellirono fra Sorea ed Estaol, nel sepolcro di Manoà, suo padre. Egli era stato giudice d’Israele per vent’anni.
