1 A ll the congregation of the children of Israel traveled from the wilderness of Sin, by their journeys, according to Yahweh’s commandment, and encamped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink.

Poi tutta la comunità dei figli d’Israele partì dal deserto di Sin, marciando a tappe secondo gli ordini del Signore. Si accampò a Refidim, ma non c’era acqua da bere per il popolo.

2 T herefore the people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test Yahweh?”

Allora il popolo protestò contro Mosè e disse: «Dacci dell’acqua da bere». Mosè rispose loro: «Perché protestate contro di me? Perché tentate il Signore ?»

3 T he people were thirsty for water there; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?”

Là il popolo patì la sete e mormorò contro Mosè, dicendo: «Perché ci hai fatto uscire dall’Egitto per far morire di sete noi, i nostri figli e il nostro bestiame?»

4 M oses cried to Yahweh, saying, “What shall I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”

Mosè gridò al Signore, dicendo: «Che cosa devo fare per questo popolo? Ancora un po’, e mi lapideranno».

5 Y ahweh said to Moses, “Walk on before the people, and take the elders of Israel with you, and take the rod in your hand with which you struck the Nile, and go.

Allora il Signore disse a Mosè: «Mettiti di fronte al popolo e prendi con te alcuni degli anziani d’Israele; prendi anche in mano il bastone col quale hai percosso il Fiume e va’.

6 B ehold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. You shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Ecco io starò là davanti a te, sulla roccia che è in Oreb; tu colpirai la roccia: ne scaturirà dell’acqua e il popolo berrà». Mosè fece così in presenza degli anziani d’Israele,

7 H e called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because the children of Israel quarreled, and because they tested Yahweh, saying, “Is Yahweh among us, or not?”

e a quel luogo mise il nome di Massa e Meriba a causa della protesta dei figli d’Israele, e perché avevano tentato il Signore, dicendo: «Il Signore è in mezzo a noi, sì o no?» Vittoria su Amalec

8 T hen Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

Allora venne Amalec per combattere contro Israele a Refidim.

9 M oses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us, and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with God’s rod in my hand.”

E Mosè disse a Giosuè: «Scegli per noi alcuni uomini ed esci a combattere contro Amalec; domani io starò sulla vetta del colle con il bastone di Dio in mano».

10 S o Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

Giosuè fece come Mosè gli aveva detto e combatté contro Amalec; e Mosè, Aaronne e Cur salirono sulla vetta del colle.

11 W hen Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed. When he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

E quando Mosè teneva le mani alzate, Israele vinceva; e quando le abbassava, vinceva Amalec.

12 B ut Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset.

Ma le mani di Mosè si facevano pesanti. Allora essi presero una pietra, gliela posero sotto ed egli si sedette; Aaronne e Cur gli tenevano le mani alzate, uno da una parte e l’altro dall’altra. Così le sue mani rimasero ferme fino al tramonto del sole.

13 J oshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

E Giosuè sconfisse Amalec e la sua gente passandoli a fil di spada.

14 Y ahweh said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under the sky.”

Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Scrivi questo fatto in un libro, perché se ne conservi il ricordo, e fa’ sapere a Giosuè che io cancellerò interamente sotto il cielo la memoria di Amalec».

15 M oses built an altar, and called its name Yahweh our Banner.

Allora Mosè costruì un altare che chiamò «il Signore è la mia bandiera»; e disse:

16 H e said, “Yah has sworn: ‘Yahweh will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.’”

«Una mano s’è alzata contro il trono del Signore, perciò il Signore farà guerra ad Amalec di generazione in generazione».
