1 W hen Balaam saw that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israel, he didn’t go, as at the other times, to meet with enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

Balaam, vedendo che piaceva al Signore benedire Israele, non ricorse come le altre volte alla magia, ma voltò la faccia verso il deserto.

2 B alaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came on him.

E, alzati gli occhi, Balaam vide Israele accampato tribù per tribù; e lo Spirito di Dio fu sopra di lui.

3 H e took up his parable, and said, “Balaam the son of Beor says, the man whose eyes are open says;

E Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo e disse: «Così dice Balaam, figlio di Beor, così dice l’uomo che ha l’occhio aperto,

4 h e says, who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down, and having his eyes open:

così dice colui che ode le parole di Dio, colui che contempla la visione dell’Onnipotente, colui che si prostra e a cui si aprono gli occhi:

5 H ow goodly are your tents, Jacob, and your tents, Israel!

“Come sono belle le tue tende, o Giacobbe, le tue dimore, o Israele!

6 A s valleys they are spread out, as gardens by the riverside, as aloes which Yahweh has planted, as cedar trees beside the waters.

Esse si estendono come valli, come giardini in riva a un fiume, come aloe piantati dal Signore, come cedri vicini alle acque.

7 W ater shall flow from his buckets. His seed shall be in many waters. His king shall be higher than Agag. His kingdom shall be exalted.

L’acqua trabocca dalle sue secchie, la sua semenza è ben irrigata, il suo re sarà più in alto di Agag e il suo regno sarà esaltato.

8 G od brings him out of Egypt. He has as it were the strength of the wild ox. He shall eat up the nations his adversaries, shall break their bones in pieces, and pierce them with his arrows.

Dio, che lo ha fatto uscire dall’Egitto, gli dà il vigore del bufalo. Egli divorerà i popoli che gli sono avversari, frantumerà loro le ossa, li trafiggerà con le sue frecce.

9 H e couched, he lay down as a lion, as a lioness; who shall rouse him up? Everyone who blesses you is blessed. Everyone who curses you is cursed.”

Egli si china, si accovaccia come un leone, come una leonessa: chi lo farà alzare? Benedetto chiunque ti benedice, maledetto chiunque ti maledice!”».

10 B alak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his hands together. Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times.

Allora l’ira di Balac si accese contro Balaam; e Balac, agitando le mani, disse a Balaam: «Io ti ho chiamato per maledire i miei nemici, ed ecco che li hai benedetti già per la terza volta.

11 T herefore now flee you to your place! I thought to promote you to great honor; but, behold, Yahweh has kept you back from honor.”

Ora fuggi a casa tua! Io avevo detto che ti avrei colmato di onori. Ma ecco, il Signore ti ha impedito di averli».

12 B alaam said to Balak, “Didn’t I also tell your messengers who you sent to me, saying,

E Balaam rispose a Balac: «E non dissi io, fin da principio, agli ambasciatori che mi mandasti:

13 ‘ If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I can’t go beyond Yahweh’s word, to do either good or bad of my own mind. I will say what Yahweh says’?

“Anche se Balac mi desse la sua casa piena d’argento e d’oro, non potrei trasgredire l’ordine del Signore per fare di mia iniziativa alcun che di bene o di male; ciò che il Signore dirà, quello dirò”?

14 N ow, behold, I go to my people. Come, I will inform you what this people shall do to your people in the latter days.”

E ora, ecco, io me ne vado al mio popolo; vieni, io ti annuncerò ciò che questo popolo farà al tuo popolo nei giorni a venire».

15 H e took up his parable, and said, “Balaam the son of Beor says, the man whose eyes are open says;

Allora Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo e disse: «Così dice Balaam, figlio di Beor; così dice l’uomo che ha l’occhio aperto,

16 h e says, who hears the words of God, knows the knowledge of the Most High, and who sees the vision of the Almighty, Falling down, and having his eyes open:

così dice colui che ode le parole di Dio, che conosce la scienza dell’Altissimo, che contempla la visione dell’Onnipotente, colui che si prostra e a cui si aprono gli occhi:

17 I see him, but not now. I see him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob. A scepter will rise out of Israel, and shall strike through the corners of Moab, and break down all the sons of Sheth.

“Lo vedo, ma non ora; lo contemplo, ma non vicino: un astro sorge da Giacobbe, e uno scettro si eleva da Israele; colpirà Moab da un capo all’altro e abbatterà tutta quella razza turbolenta.

18 E dom shall be a possession. Seir, his enemies, also shall be a possession, while Israel does valiantly.

S’impadronirà di Edom, s’impadronirà di Seir, suo nemico; Israele farà prodezze.

19 O ut of Jacob shall one have dominion, and shall destroy the remnant from the city.”

Da Giacobbe verrà un dominatore che sterminerà i superstiti delle città”».

20 H e looked at Amalek, and took up his parable, and said, “Amalek was the first of the nations, But his latter end shall come to destruction.”

Poi Balaam vide Amalec e pronunciò il suo oracolo, e disse: «Amalec è la prima delle nazioni, ma il suo avvenire va in rovina».

21 H e looked at the Kenite, and took up his parable, and said, “Your dwelling place is strong. Your nest is set in the rock.

Poi vide i Chenei e pronunciò il suo oracolo, e disse: «La tua abitazione è solida e il tuo nido è posto nella roccia;

22 N evertheless Kain shall be wasted, until Asshur carries you away captive.”

nondimeno, il Cheneo dovrà essere devastato, finché l’Assiro ti conduca in prigionia».

23 H e took up his parable, and said, “Alas, who shall live when God does this?

Poi pronunciò di nuovo il suo oracolo, e disse: «Ahimè! Chi resisterà quando Dio lo avrà stabilito?

24 B ut ships shall come from the coast of Kittim. They shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber. He also shall come to destruction.”

Ma delle navi verranno dalle parti di Chittim e umilieranno Assur, umilieranno Eber, ed egli pure finirà per essere distrutto».

25 B alaam rose up, and went and returned to his place; and Balak also went his way.

Poi Balaam si alzò, partì e se ne tornò a casa sua; e Balac pure se ne andò per la sua strada.
