1 V iendo la multitud, subió al monte y se sentó. Se le acercaron sus discípulos,

Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain. When he had sat down, his disciples came to him.

2 y él, abriendo su boca, les enseñaba diciendo: Las bienaventuranzas

He opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

3 « Bienaventurados los pobres en espíritu, porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

4 B ienaventurados los que lloran, porque recibirán consolación.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 B ienaventurados los mansos, porque recibirán la tierra por heredad.

Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 B ienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia, porque serán saciados.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

7 B ienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque alcanzarán misericordia.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

8 B ienaventurados los de limpio corazón, porque verán a Dios.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 B ienaventurados los pacificadores, porque serán llamados hijos de Dios.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

10 B ienaventurados los que padecen persecución por causa de la justicia, porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos.

Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

11 B ienaventurados seréis cuando por mi causa os insulten, os persigan y digan toda clase de mal contra vosotros, mintiendo.

“Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 » Gozaos y alegraos, porque vuestra recompensa es grande en los cielos, pues así persiguieron a los profetas que vivieron antes de vosotros. La sal de la tierra

Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

13 » Vosotros sois la sal de la tierra; pero si la sal pierde su sabor, ¿con qué será salada? No sirve más para nada, sino para ser echada fuera y pisoteada por los hombres. La luz del mundo

“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.

14 » Vosotros sois la luz del mundo; una ciudad asentada sobre un monte no se puede esconder.

You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden.

15 N i se enciende una luz y se pone debajo de una vasija, sino sobre el candelero para que alumbre a todos los que están en casa.

Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house.

16 A sí alumbre vuestra luz delante de los hombres, para que vean vuestras buenas obras y glorifiquen a vuestro Padre que está en los cielos. Jesús y la Ley

Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

17 » No penséis que he venido a abolir la Ley o los Profetas; no he venido a abolir, sino a cumplir,

“Don’t think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill.

18 p orque de cierto os digo que antes que pasen el cielo y la tierra, ni una jota ni una tilde pasará de la Ley, hasta que todo se haya cumplido.

For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished.

19 D e manera que cualquiera que quebrante uno de estos mandamientos muy pequeños y así enseñe a los hombres, muy pequeño será llamado en el reino de los cielos; pero cualquiera que los cumpla y los enseñe, éste será llamado grande en el reino de los cielos.

Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

20 » Por tanto, os digo que si vuestra justicia no fuera mayor que la de los escribas y fariseos, no entraréis en el reino de los cielos. Sobre la ira

For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

21 » Oísteis que fue dicho a los antiguos: “No matarás”, y cualquiera que mate será culpable de juicio.

“You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, ‘You shall not murder;’ and ‘Whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’

22 P ero yo os digo que cualquiera que se enoje contra su hermano, será culpable de juicio; y cualquiera que diga “Necio” a su hermano, será culpable ante el Concilio; y cualquiera que le diga “Fatuo”, quedará expuesto al infierno de fuego.

But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment; and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ will be in danger of the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.

23 » Por tanto, si traes tu ofrenda al altar y allí te acuerdas de que tu hermano tiene algo contra ti,

“If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you,

24 d eja allí tu ofrenda delante del altar y ve, reconcíliate primero con tu hermano, y entonces vuelve y presenta tu ofrenda.

leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

25 P onte de acuerdo pronto con tu adversario, entre tanto que estás con él en el camino, no sea que el adversario te entregue al juez, y el juez al guardia, y seas echado en la cárcel.

Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him on the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.

26 D e cierto te digo que no saldrás de allí hasta que pagues el último cuadrante. Sobre el adulterio

Most certainly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there, until you have paid the last penny.

27 » Oísteis que fue dicho: “No cometerás adulterio.”

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery;’

28 P ero yo os digo que cualquiera que mira a una mujer para codiciarla, ya adulteró con ella en su corazón.

but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

29 » Por tanto, si tu ojo derecho te es ocasión de caer, sácalo y échalo de ti, pues mejor te es que se pierda uno de tus miembros, y no que todo tu cuerpo sea arrojado al infierno.

If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.

30 Y si tu mano derecha te es ocasión de caer, córtala y échala de ti, pues mejor te es que se pierda uno de tus miembros, y no que todo tu cuerpo sea arrojado al infierno. Sobre el divorcio

If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.

31 » También fue dicho: “Cualquiera que repudie a su mujer, déle carta de divorcio.”

“It was also said, ‘Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,’

32 P ero yo os digo que el que repudia a su mujer, a no ser por causa de fornicación, hace que ella adultere, y el que se casa con la repudiada, comete adulterio. Sobre los juramentos

but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery.

33 » Además habéis oído que fue dicho a los antiguos: “No jurarás en falso, sino cumplirás al Señor tus juramentos.”

“Again you have heard that it was said to them of old time, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,’

34 P ero yo os digo: No juréis de ninguna manera: ni por el cielo, porque es el trono de Dios;

but I tell you, don’t swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;

35 n i por la tierra, porque es el estrado de sus pies; ni por Jerusalén, porque es la ciudad del gran Rey.

nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

36 N i por tu cabeza jurarás, porque no puedes hacer blanco o negro un solo cabello.

Neither shall you swear by your head, for you can’t make one hair white or black.

37 P ero sea vuestro hablar: “Sí, sí” o “No, no” porque lo que es más de esto, de mal procede. Sobre la venganza

But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.

38 » Oísteis que fue dicho: “Ojo por ojo y diente por diente.”

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’

39 P ero yo os digo: No resistáis al que es malo; antes, a cualquiera que te hiera en la mejilla derecha, vuélvele también la otra;

But I tell you, don’t resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40 a l que quiera ponerte a pleito y quitarte la túnica, déjale también la capa;

If anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also.

41 a cualquiera que te obligue a llevar carga por una milla, ve con él dos.

Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

42 A l que te pida, dale; y al que quiera tomar de ti prestado, no se lo niegues. Sobre el amor a los enemigos

Give to him who asks you, and don’t turn away him who desires to borrow from you.

43 » Oísteis que fue dicho: “Amarás a tu prójimo y odiarás a tu enemigo.”

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

44 P ero yo os digo: Amad a vuestros enemigos, bendecid a los que os maldicen, haced bien a los que os odian y orad por los que os ultrajan y os persiguen,

But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,

45 p ara que seáis hijos de vuestro Padre que está en los cielos, que hace salir su sol sobre malos y buenos y llover sobre justos e injustos.

that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.

46 S i amáis a los que os aman, ¿qué recompensa tendréis? ¿No hacen también lo mismo los publicanos?

For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?

47 Y si saludáis a vuestros hermanos solamente, ¿qué hacéis de más? ¿No hacen también así los gentiles?

If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?

48 S ed, pues, vosotros perfectos, como vuestro Padre que está en los cielos es perfecto.

Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
