1 H abiendo dicho Jesús estas cosas, salió con sus discípulos al otro lado del torrente Cedrón, donde había un huerto en el cual entró con sus discípulos.

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.

2 Y también Judas, el que lo entregaba, conocía aquel lugar, porque muchas veces Jesús se había reunido allí con sus discípulos.

Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.

3 J udas, pues, tomando una compañía de soldados y guardias de los principales sacerdotes y de los fariseos, fue allí con linternas, antorchas y armas.

Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

4 P ero Jesús, sabiendo todas las cosas que le habían de sobrevenir, se adelantó y les preguntó: —¿A quién buscáis?

Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went out, and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”

5 L e respondieron: —A Jesús nazareno. Jesús les dijo: —Yo soy. Estaba también con ellos Judas, el que lo entregaba.

They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.

6 C uando les dijo: «Yo soy», retrocedieron y cayeron a tierra.

When therefore he said to them, “I am he,” they went backward, and fell to the ground.

7 V olvió, pues, a preguntarles: —¿A quién buscáis? Y ellos dijeron: —A Jesús nazareno.

Again therefore he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

8 R espondió Jesús: —Os he dicho que yo soy. Si me buscáis a mí, dejad ir a estos.

Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,”

9 E sto dijo para que se cumpliera aquello que había dicho: «De los que me diste, no perdí ninguno.»

that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none.”

10 E ntonces Simón Pedro, que tenía una espada, la desenvainó, hirió al siervo del Sumo sacerdote y le cortó la oreja derecha. El siervo se llamaba Malco.

Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 J esús entonces dijo a Pedro: —Mete tu espada en la vaina. La copa que el Padre me ha dado, ¿no la he de beber? Jesús ante el sumo sacerdote

Jesus therefore said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?”

12 E ntonces la compañía de soldados, el comandante y los guardias de los judíos prendieron a Jesús, lo ataron

So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,

13 y lo llevaron primeramente ante Anás, porque era suegro de Caifás, que era sumo sacerdote aquel año.

and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

14 C aifás fue quien explicó a los judíos que convenía que un solo hombre muriera por el pueblo. Pedro en el patio de Anás

Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.

15 S eguían a Jesús Simón Pedro y otro discípulo. Este discípulo era conocido del sumo sacerdote, y entró con Jesús al patio del sumo sacerdote;

Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;

16 p ero Pedro estaba fuera, a la puerta. Salió, pues, el discípulo que era conocido del sumo sacerdote, y habló a la portera e hizo entrar a Pedro.

but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter.

17 E ntonces la criada portera dijo a Pedro: —¿No eres tú también de los discípulos de este hombre? Dijo él: —¡No lo soy!

Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.”

18 E staban en pie los siervos y los guardias que habían encendido un fuego, porque hacía frío y se calentaban. También con ellos estaba Pedro en pie, calentándose. Anás interroga a Jesús

Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.

19 E l sumo sacerdote preguntó a Jesús acerca de sus discípulos y de su doctrina.

The high priest therefore asked Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching.

20 J esús le respondió: —Yo públicamente he hablado al mundo. Siempre he enseñado en la sinagoga y en el Templo, donde se reúnen todos los judíos, y nada he hablado en oculto.

Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.

21 ¿ Por qué me preguntas a mí? Pregunta, a los que han oído, de qué les he hablado; ellos saben lo que yo he dicho.

Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, these know the things which I said.”

22 C uando Jesús dijo esto, uno de los guardias que estaba allí le dio una bofetada, diciendo: —¿Así respondes al sumo sacerdote?

When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, “Do you answer the high priest like that?”

23 J esús le respondió: —Si he hablado mal, testifica en qué está el mal; pero si bien, ¿por qué me golpeas?

Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?”

24 A nás entonces lo envió atado a Caifás, el sumo sacerdote. Pedro niega a Jesús

Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.

25 E staba, pues, Pedro en pie, calentándose, y le preguntaron: —¿No eres tú de sus discípulos? Él negó y dijo: —¡No lo soy!

Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, “You aren’t also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.”

26 U no de los siervos del Sumo sacerdote, pariente de aquel a quien Pedro había cortado la oreja, le dijo: —¿No te vi yo en el huerto con él?

One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”

27 N egó Pedro otra vez, y en seguida cantó el gallo. Jesús ante Pilato

Peter therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.

28 L levaron a Jesús de casa de Caifás al pretorio. Era de mañana, y ellos no entraron en el pretorio para no contaminarse y así poder comer la Pascua.

They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn’t enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.

29 E ntonces salió Pilato a donde ellos estaban, y les dijo: —¿Qué acusación traéis contra este hombre?

Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”

30 R espondieron y le dijeron: —Si éste no fuera malhechor, no te lo habríamos entregado.

They answered him, “If this man weren’t an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”

31 E ntonces les dijo Pilato: —Tomadlo vosotros y juzgadlo según vuestra ley. Los judíos le dijeron: —A nosotros no nos está permitido dar muerte a nadie.

Pilate therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,”

32 D ijeron esto para que se cumpliera la palabra que Jesús había dicho, dando a entender de qué muerte iba a morir.

that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.

33 E ntonces Pilato volvió a entrar en el pretorio, llamó a Jesús y le dijo: —¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?

Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”

34 J esús le respondió: —¿Dices tú esto por ti mismo o te lo han dicho otros de mí?

Jesus answered him, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?”

35 P ilato le respondió: —¿Soy yo acaso judío? Tu nación y los principales sacerdotes te han entregado a mí. ¿Qué has hecho?

Pilate answered, “I’m not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?”

36 R espondió Jesús: —Mi Reino no es de este mundo; si mi Reino fuera de este mundo, mis servidores pelearían para que yo no fuera entregado a los judíos; pero mi Reino no es de aquí.

Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.”

37 L e dijo entonces Pilato: —Luego, ¿eres tú rey? Respondió Jesús: —Tú dices que yo soy rey. Yo para esto he nacido y para esto he venido al mundo: para dar testimonio de la verdad. Todo aquel que es de la verdad, oye mi voz.

Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

38 L e dijo Pilato: —¿Qué es la verdad? Y dicho esto, salió otra vez a donde estaban los judíos, y les dijo: —Yo no hallo en él ningún delito.

Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no basis for a charge against him.

39 P ero vosotros tenéis la costumbre de que os suelte a un preso en la Pascua. ¿Queréis, pues, que os suelte al Rey de los judíos?

But you have a custom, that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

40 E ntonces todos dieron voces de nuevo, diciendo: —¡A éste no! ¡A Barrabás! —y Barrabás era ladrón—.

Then they all shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
