The first book I wrote, Theophilus, concerned all that Jesus began both to do and to teach,

2 h asta el día en que fue recibido arriba, después de haber dado mandamientos por el Espíritu Santo a los apóstoles que había escogido.

until the day in which he was received up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.

3 A ellos también, después de haber padecido, se presentó vivo con muchas pruebas indubitables, apareciéndoseles durante cuarenta días y hablándoles acerca del reino de Dios.

To these he also showed himself alive after he suffered, by many proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days, and speaking about God’s Kingdom.

4 Y estando juntos, les ordenó: —No salgáis de Jerusalén, sino esperad la promesa del Padre, la cual oísteis de mí,

Being assembled together with them, he commanded them, “Don’t depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which you heard from me.

5 p orque Juan ciertamente bautizó con agua, pero vosotros seréis bautizados con el Espíritu Santo dentro de no muchos días. La ascensión

For John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

6 E ntonces los que se habían reunido le preguntaron, diciendo: —Señor, ¿restaurarás el reino a Israel en este tiempo?

Therefore when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you now restoring the kingdom to Israel?”

7 L es dijo: —No os toca a vosotros saber los tiempos o las ocasiones que el Padre puso en su sola potestad;

He said to them, “It isn’t for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority.

8 p ero recibiréis poder cuando haya venido sobre vosotros el Espíritu Santo, y me seréis testigos en Jerusalén, en toda Judea, en Samaria y hasta lo último de la tierra.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”

9 Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, viéndolo ellos, fue alzado, y lo recibió una nube que lo ocultó de sus ojos.

When he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10 Y estando ellos con los ojos puestos en el cielo, entre tanto que él se iba, se pusieron junto a ellos dos varones con vestiduras blancas,

While they were looking steadfastly into the sky as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white clothing,

11 l os cuales les dijeron: —Galileos, ¿por qué estáis mirando al cielo? Este mismo Jesús, que ha sido tomado de vosotros al cielo, así vendrá como lo habéis visto ir al cielo. Elección del sucesor de Judas

who also said, “You men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who was received up from you into the sky will come back in the same way as you saw him going into the sky.”

12 E ntonces volvieron a Jerusalén desde el monte que se llama del Olivar, el cual está cerca de Jerusalén, camino de un sábado.

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.

13 C uando llegaron, subieron al aposento alto, donde se alojaban Pedro y Jacobo, Juan, Andrés, Felipe, Tomás, Bartolomé, Mateo, Jacobo hijo de Alfeo, Simón el Zelote y Judas hermano de Jacobo.

When they had come in, they went up into the upper room, where they were staying; that is Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.

14 T odos estos perseveraban unánimes en oración y ruego, con las mujeres, y con María la madre de Jesús, y con sus hermanos.

All these with one accord continued steadfastly in prayer and supplication, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

15 E n aquellos días Pedro se levantó en medio de los hermanos (los reunidos eran como ciento veinte en número), y dijo:

In these days, Peter stood up in the middle of the disciples (and the number of names was about one hundred twenty), and said,

16 — Hermanos, era necesario que se cumpliera la Escritura que el Espíritu Santo, por boca de David, había anunciado acerca de Judas, que fue guía de los que prendieron a Jesús,

“Brothers, it was necessary that this Scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to those who took Jesus.

17 y era contado con nosotros y tenía parte en este ministerio.

For he was numbered with us, and received his portion in this ministry.

18 É ste, pues, que había adquirido un campo con el salario de su iniquidad, cayó de cabeza y se reventó por la mitad, y todas sus entrañas se derramaron.

Now this man obtained a field with the reward for his wickedness, and falling headlong, his body burst open, and all his intestines gushed out.

19 Y fue notorio a todos los habitantes de Jerusalén, de tal manera que aquel campo se llama en su propia lengua, Acéldama (que significa “Campo de sangre”),

It became known to everyone who lived in Jerusalem that in their language that field was called ‘Akeldama,’ that is, ‘The field of blood.’

20 p orque está escrito en el libro de los Salmos: »“Sea hecha desierta su habitación y no haya quien more en ella”, »y: »“Tome otro su oficio.”

For it is written in the book of Psalms, ‘Let his habitation be made desolate. Let no one dwell therein;’ and, ‘Let another take his office.’

21 » Es necesario, pues, que de estos hombres que han estado juntos con nosotros todo el tiempo que el Señor Jesús entraba y salía entre nosotros,

“Of the men therefore who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

22 c omenzando desde el bautismo de Juan hasta el día en que de entre nosotros fue recibido arriba, uno sea hecho con nosotros testigo de su resurrección.

beginning from the baptism of John, to the day that he was received up from us, of these one must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

23 E ntonces propusieron a dos: a José, llamado Barsabás, que tenía por sobrenombre Justo, y a Matías.

They put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.

24 Y orando, dijeron: «Tú, Señor, que conoces los corazones de todos, muestra cuál de estos dos has escogido,

They prayed, and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two you have chosen

25 p ara que tome la parte de este ministerio y apostolado, del cual cayó Judas por transgresión, para irse a su propio lugar.»

to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.”

26 E ntonces echaron suertes sobre ellos, y la suerte cayó sobre Matías; y fue contado con los once apóstoles.

They drew lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
