1 I srael estaba en Sitim cuando el pueblo empezó a prostituirse con las hijas de Moab,

Israel stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab;

2 l as cuales invitaban al pueblo a los sacrificios de sus dioses; el pueblo comió y se inclinó a sus dioses.

for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods. The people ate and bowed down to their gods.

3 A sí acudió el pueblo a Baal-peor, y el furor de Jehová se encendió contra Israel.

Israel joined himself to Baal Peor. Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel.

4 J ehová dijo a Moisés: «Toma a todos los príncipes del pueblo y ahórcalos ante Jehová a plena luz del día, para que el ardor de la ira de Jehová se aparte de Israel.»

Yahweh said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahweh before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel.”

5 M oisés dijo a los jueces de Israel: «Matad cada uno a aquellos de los vuestros que se han juntado con Baal-peor.»

Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor.”

6 U no de los hijos de Israel llegó trayendo una madianita adonde estaban sus hermanos, ante los ojos de Moisés y de toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, mientras ellos lloraban a la puerta del Tabernáculo de reunión.

Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

7 A l ver esto, Finees hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, se levantó de en medio de la congregación, tomó una lanza en su mano,

When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the middle of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.

8 e ntró tras aquel hombre de Israel a la tienda y los traspasó a ambos por el vientre, al varón de Israel y a la mujer. Y cesó la mortandad de los hijos de Israel.

He went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

9 L os que murieron a causa de aquella plaga fueron veinticuatro mil.

Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

10 E ntonces Jehová habló a Moisés y le dijo:

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

11 « Finees hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, ha hecho apartar mi furor de los hijos de Israel, porque ha mostrado entre ellos un celo como el mío; por eso yo no he consumido en mi celo a los hijos de Israel.

“Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn’t consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.

12 D iles, por tanto: “Yo establezco mi pacto de paz con él.

Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace.

13 S erá para él, y para su descendencia después de él, el pacto del sacerdocio perpetuo, por cuanto tuvo celo por su Dios e hizo expiación por los hijos de Israel.”»

It shall be to him, and to his offspring after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’”

14 E l nombre del hombre que fue muerto junto con la madianita era Zimri hijo de Salu, jefe de una familia de la tribu de Simeón.

Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites.

15 Y el nombre de la mujer madianita muerta era Cozbi, hija de Zur, príncipe de pueblos, padre de familia en Madián.

The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur. He was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.

16 J ehová habló a Moisés y le dijo:

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

17 « Atacad a los madianitas y heridlos,

“Harass the Midianites, and strike them,

18 p or cuanto ellos os afligieron a vosotros engañándoos con sus ardides en lo tocante a Baal-peor, y en lo tocante a Cozbi, hija del príncipe de Madián, hermana de ellos, la cual fue muerta el día de la mortandad que vino por lo de Baal-peor.»

for they harassed you with their wiles, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.”
