1 M y last words to you, Christian brothers, are that you pray for us. Pray that the Word of the Lord will go out over all the land and prove its power just as it did with you.

Weiter, liebe Brüder, betet für uns, daß das Wort des HERRN laufe und gepriesen werde wie bei euch,

2 P ray that we will be kept from sinful men, because not all men are Christians.

und daß wir erlöst werden von den unverständigen und argen Menschen. Denn der Glaube ist nicht jedermanns Ding.

3 B ut the Lord is faithful. He will give you strength and keep you safe from the devil.

Aber der HERR ist treu; der wird euch stärken und bewahren vor dem Argen.

4 W e have faith in the Lord for you. We believe you are doing and will keep on doing the things we told you.

Wir versehen uns aber zu euch in dem HERRN, daß ihr tut und tun werdet, was wir euch gebieten.

5 M ay the Lord lead your hearts into the love of God. May He help you as you wait for Christ.

Der HERR aber richte eure Herzen zu der Liebe Gottes und zu der Geduld Christi.

6 N ow this is what we tell you to do, Christian brothers. In the name of the Lord Jesus, keep away from any Christian who is lazy and who does not do what we taught you.

Wir gebieten euch aber, liebe Brüder, in dem Namen unsers HERRN Jesu Christi, daß ihr euch entzieht von jedem Bruder, der da unordentlich wandelt und nicht nach der Satzung, die er von uns empfangen hat.

7 Y ou know you should follow the way of life we lived when we were with you. We worked hard while we were there.

Denn ihr wisset, wie ihr uns sollt nachfolgen. Denn wir sind nicht unordentlich unter euch gewesen,

8 W e did not eat anyone’s food without paying for it. We worked hard night and day so none of you would have to give us anything.

haben auch nicht umsonst das Brot genommen von jemand; sondern mit Arbeit und Mühe Tag und Nacht haben wir gewirkt, daß wir nicht jemand unter euch beschwerlich wären.

9 W e could have asked you to give us food. But we did not so that you might follow our way of living.

Nicht darum, daß wir es nicht Macht haben, sondern daß wir uns selbst zum Vorbilde euch gäben, uns nachzufolgen.

10 W hen we were with you, we told you that if a man does not work, he should not eat.

Und da wir bei euch waren, geboten wir euch solches, daß, so jemand nicht will arbeiten, der soll auch nicht essen.

11 W e hear that some are not working. But they are spending their time trying to see what others are doing.

Denn wir hören, daß etliche unter euch wandeln unordentlich und arbeiten nichts, sondern treiben Vorwitz.

12 O ur words to such people are that they should be quiet and go to work. They should eat their own food. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we say this.

Solchen aber gebieten wir und ermahnen sie durch unsern HERRN Jesus Christus, daß sie mit stillem Wesen arbeiten und ihr eigen Brot essen.

13 B ut you, Christian brothers, do not get tired of doing good.

Ihr aber, liebe Brüder, werdet nicht verdrossen Gutes zu tun.

14 I f anyone does not want to listen to what we say in this letter, remember who he is and stay away from him. In that way, he will be put to shame.

So aber jemand nicht gehorsam ist unserm Wort, den zeigt an durch einen Brief, und habt nichts mit ihm zu schaffen, auf daß er schamrot werde;

15 D o not think of him as one who hates you. But talk to him as a Christian brother.

doch haltet ihn nicht als einen Feind, sondern vermahnet ihn als einen Bruder.

16 M ay the Lord of peace give you His peace at all times. The Lord be with you all.

Er aber, der HERR des Friedens, gebe euch Frieden allenthalben und auf allerlei Weise. Der HERR sei mit euch allen!

17 I , Paul, write this last part with my own hand. It is the way I finish all my letters.

Der Gruß mit meiner, des Paulus, Hand. Das ist das Zeichen in allen Briefen; also schreibe ich.

18 M ay all of you have loving-favor from our Lord Jesus Christ.

Die Gnade unsers HERRN Jesu Christi sei mit euch allen! Amen.
