1 N ow came the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, when the king’s law was about to be carried out. It was the day when those who hated the Jews hoped to get the rule over them. But their plan was turned around, and the Jews ruled over those who hated them.

Im zwölften Monat, das ist der Monat Adar, am dreizehnten Tag, den des Königs Wort und Gebot bestimmt hatte, daß man's tun sollte, ebendesselben Tages, da die Feinde der Juden hofften, sie zu überwältigen, wandte sich's, daß die Juden ihre Feinde überwältigen sollten.

2 T he Jews gathered in their cities in all the parts of the nation of King Ahasuerus to hurt those who wanted to kill them. No one could stand in front of them, for the fear of them had come upon all the people.

Da versammelten sich die Juden in ihren Städten in allen Landen des Königs Ahasveros, daß sie die Hand legten an die, so ihnen übel wollten. Und niemand konnte ihnen widerstehen; denn ihre Furcht war über alle Völker gekommen.

3 T he princes of the nation, the rulers, the leaders, and those who were doing the king’s work all helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had come upon them.

Auch alle Obersten in den Landen und Fürsten und Landpfleger und Amtleute des Königs halfen den Juden; denn die Furcht vor Mardochai war über sie gekommen.

4 F or Mordecai was great in the king’s house. His name spread through all the nation, for the man Mordecai became greater and greater.

Denn Mardochai war groß im Hause des Königs, und sein Gerücht erscholl in allen Ländern, wie er zunähme und groß würde.

5 S o the Jews killed and destroyed with sword all those who hated them. They did as they pleased to those who hated them.

Also schlugen die Juden an allen ihren Feinden eine Schwertschlacht und würgten und raubten und brachten um und taten nach ihrem Willen an denen, die ihnen feind waren.

6 I n the city of Susa where the king ruled the Jews killed and destroyed 500 men,

Und zu Schloß Susan erwürgten die Juden und brachten um fünfhundert Mann;

7 a nd Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,

dazu erwürgten sie Parsandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,

8 P oratha, Adalia, Aridatha,

Poratha, Adalja, Aridatha,

9 P armashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha.

Parmastha, Arisai, Aridai, Vajesatha,

10 T hese were the ten sons of Haman, the son of Hammedatha, who hated the Jews. But they did not touch anything that belonged to them.

die zehn Söhne Hamans, des Sohne Hammedathas, des Judenfeindes. Aber an die Güter legten sie ihre Hände nicht.

11 O n that day the number of those who were killed in the city of Susa where the king lived was told to the king.

Zu derselben Zeit kam die Zahl der Erwürgten zu Schloß Susan vor den König.

12 A nd the king said to Queen Esther, “The Jews have killed and destroyed 500 men and the ten sons of Haman in Susa. What then have they done in the rest of the king’s nation! Now what do you ask of me? It will be done for you. What else do you want? It will be done.”

Und der König sprach zu der Königin Esther: Die Juden haben zu Schloß Susan fünfhundert Mann erwürgt und umgebracht und die zehn Söhne Hamans; was werden sie tun in den andern Ländern des Königs? was bittest du, daß man dir gebe? und was forderst du mehr, daß man tue?

13 E sther said, “If it pleases the king, let the Jews in Susa be allowed tomorrow also to carry out today’s law. Let the bodies of Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the tower.”

Esther sprach: Gefällt's dem König, so lasse er auch morgen die Juden tun nach dem heutigen Gebot, und die zehn Söhne Hamans soll man an den Baum hängen.

14 S o the king said that this should be done. He made it known in Susa, and the bodies of Haman’s ten sons were hanged.

Und der König hieß also tun. Und das Gebot ward zu Susan angeschlagen, und die zehn Söhne Haman wurden gehängt.

15 T he Jews in Susa gathered also on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and killed 300 men in Susa. But they did not touch anything that belonged to them.

Und die Juden zu Susan versammelten sich auch am vierzehnten Tage des Monats Adar und erwürgten zu Susan dreihundert Mann; aber an ihre Güter legten sie ihre Hände nicht.

16 N ow the rest of the Jews who were in the king’s nation gathered to fight for their lives and get rid of those who hated them. They killed 75, 000 of those who hated them. But they did not touch anything that belonged to them.

Aber die andern Juden in den Ländern des Königs kamen zusammen und standen für ihr Leben, daß sie Ruhe schafften vor ihren Feinden, und erwürgten ihrer Feinde fünfundsiebzigtausend; aber an ihre Güter legten sie ihre Hände nicht.

17 T his was on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. On the fourteenth day they rested and made it a day of eating and joy.

Das geschah am dreizehnten Tage des Monats Adar, und sie ruhten am vierzehnten Tage desselben Monats; den machte man zum Tage des Wohllebens und der Freude.

18 B ut the Jews in Susa gathered on the thirteenth and fourteenth days of the same month. And they rested on the fifteenth day and made it a day of eating and joy.

Aber die Juden zu Susan waren zusammengekommen am dreizehnten und am vierzehnten Tage und ruhten am fünfzehnten Tag; und den Tag machte man zum Tage des Wohllebens und der Freude.

19 S o the Jews of the villages, who lived in the small towns without walls, made the fourteenth day of the month of Adar a special day of joy and eating and sharing their food with one another. The Special Supper of Purim

Darum machten die Juden, die auf den Dörfern und Flecken wohnten, den vierzehnten Tag des Monats Adar zum Tag des Wohllebens und der Freude, und sandte einer dem andern Geschenke.

20 M ordecai wrote down these things. And he sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the nation of King Ahasuerus, both near and far.

Und Mardochai schrieb diese Geschichten auf und sandte Briefe an alle Juden, die in den Landen des Königs Ahasveros waren, nahen und fernen,

21 H e told them to remember the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar each year.

daß sie annähmen und hielten den vierzehnten und fünfzehnten Tag des Monats Adar jährlich,

22 B ecause on those days the Jews got rid of those who hated them. It was a month which was changed from sorrow into joy, from a day of sorrow into a special day. He said that they should make them days of eating and joy and sending food to one another and gifts to the poor.

nach den Tagen, darin die Juden zur Ruhe gekommen waren von ihren Feinden und nach dem Monat, darin ihre Schmerzen in Freude und ihr Leid in gute Tage verkehrt war; daß sie dieselben halten sollten als Tage des Wohllebens und der Freude und einer dem andern Geschenke schicken und den Armen mitteilen.

23 S o the Jews agreed to do what they had started to do, and what Mordecai had written to them.

Und die Juden nahmen's an, was sie angefangen hatten zu tun und was Mardochai an sie schrieb:

24 F or Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the one who hated all the Jews, had planned to destroy the Jews. He had drawn names, using Pur, to trouble them and destroy them.

wie Haman, der Sohn Hammedathas, der Agagiter, aller Juden Feind, gedacht hatte, alle Juden umzubringen, und das Pur, das ist das Los, werfen lassen, sie zu erschrecken und umzubringen;

25 B ut when the king heard about it, he made it known by letter that his plan against the Jews should bring trouble upon himself. And he had Haman and his sons hanged on the tower.

und wie Esther zum König gegangen war und derselbe durch Briefe geboten hatte, daß seine bösen Anschläge, die er wider die Juden gedacht, auf seinen Kopf gekehrt würden; und wie man ihn und seine Söhne an den Baum gehängt hatte.

26 S o they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Because of what was written in this letter, and what they had seen and what had happened to them,

Daher sie diese Tage Purim nannten nach dem Namen des Loses. Und nach allen Worten dieses Briefes und dem, was sie selbst gesehen hatten und was an sie gelangt war,

27 t he Jews set apart this special time each year for themselves, for their children and their children’s children, and for all who joined them. They would always remember to keep these two days special, as it was written and at the same time every year.

richteten die Juden es auf und nahmen's auf sich und auf ihre Nachkommen und auf alle, die sich zu ihnen taten, daß sie nicht unterlassen wollten, zu halten diese zwei Tage jährlich, wie die vorgeschrieben und bestimmt waren;

28 T hese days were to be remembered and kept as a special time for all their children-to-come, in every family, every land, and every city. These days of Purim were not to be forgotten by the Jews. Their children and their children’s children were to remember them forever.

daß diese Tage nicht vergessen, sondern zu halten seien bei Kindeskindern, bei allen Geschlechtern, in allen Ländern und Städten. Es sind die Tage Purim, welche nicht sollen übergangen werden unter den Juden, und ihr Gedächtnis soll nicht umkommen bei ihren Nachkommen.

29 T hen Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, with Mordecai the Jew, wrote with full power to make this second letter about Purim sure.

Und die Königin Esther, die Tochter Abihails, und Mardochai, der Jude, schrieben mit ganzem Ernst, um es zu bestätigen, diesen zweiten Brief von Purim;

30 L etters were sent to all the Jews in the 127 parts of the nation of Ahasuerus, in words of peace and truth.

und er sandte die Briefe zu allen Juden in den hundert und siebenundzwanzig Ländern des Königreichs des Ahasveros mit freundlichen und treuen Worten:

31 T hey made sure that these days of Purim would be kept at the right times, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had told them. These days were set apart for themselves and for their children and their children’s children, with the times they were to go without food and the times they were to be sad.

daß sie annähmen die Tage Purim auf die bestimmte Zeit, wie Mardochai, der Jude, über sie bestätigt hatte und die Königin Esther, und wie sie für sich selbst und ihre Nachkommen bestätigt hatten die Geschichte der Fasten und ihres Schreiens.

32 T he words of Esther made the rules for keeping Purim sure, and it was written in the book.

Und Esther befahl, die Geschichte dieser Purim zu bestätigen. Und es ward in ein Buch geschrieben.
