1 E ntonces respondió Jehová a Job desde un torbellino, y dijo:

Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,

2 ¿ Quién es ése que oscurece el consejo Con palabras sin sabiduría?

“Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

3 A hora ciñe, como un luchador, tus lomos; Yo te preguntaré, y tú me contestarás.

Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!

4 ¿ Dónde estabas tú cuando yo fundaba la tierra? Házmelo saber, si tienes inteligencia.

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.

5 ¿ Quién ordenó sus medidas, si lo sabes? ¿O quién extendió sobre ella cordel?

Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?

6 ¿ Sobre qué están fundadas sus basas? ¿O quién puso su piedra angular,

Whereupon were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,

7 C uando alababan todas las estrellas del alba, Y se regocijaban todos los hijos de Dios?

when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

8 ¿ Quién encerró con puertas el mar, Cuando se derramaba saliéndose de su seno,

“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,

9 C uando puse yo nubes por vestidura suya, Y por pañales la oscuridad,

when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,

10 Y tracé para él frontera, Le puse puertas y cerrojo,

marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,

11 Y dije: Hasta aquí llegarás, y no pasarás adelante, Y ahí se romperá el orgullo de tus olas?

and said, ‘Here you may come, but no further. Here your proud waves shall be stayed?’

12 ¿ Has mandado tú alguna vez en tu vida a la mañana? ¿Has señalado a la aurora su lugar,

“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place;

13 P ara que coja a la tierra por sus bordes, Y sean sacudidos de ella los impíos?

that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?

14 E lla muda luego de aspecto como arcilla bajo el sello, Y viene a estar todo como una vestidura;

It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.

15 M as la luz de los impíos es quitada de ellos, Y el brazo enaltecido es quebrantado.

From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.

16 ¿ Has entrado tú hasta las fuentes del mar, Y has andado escudriñando el abismo?

“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?

17 ¿ Te han sido descubiertas las puertas de la muerte, Y has visto las puertas de la sombra de muerte?

Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?

18 ¿ Has calculado las anchuras de la tierra? Declara si sabes todo esto.

Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.

19 ¿ Por dónde se va a la morada de la luz, Y dónde está el lugar de las tinieblas,

“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,

20 P ara que las lleves a sus límites, Y les muestres las sendas de su casa?

that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?

21 L o sabrás, sin duda, porque ya habías nacido, Y es muy grande el número de tus días.

Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!

22 ¿ Has entrado tú en los depósitos de la nieve, O has visto las reservas del granizo,

Have you entered the treasuries of the snow, or have you seen the treasures of the hail,

23 Q ue tengo guardado para el tiempo de angustia, Para el día de la guerra y de la batalla?

which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

24 ¿ Por qué camino se reparte la luz, Y se esparce el viento solano sobre la tierra?

By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?

25 ¿ Quién abre un canal al aguacero, Y camino a los relámpagos y truenos,

Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm;

26 H aciendo llover sobre la tierra deshabitada, Sobre el desierto, donde no habita el hombre,

To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man;

27 P ara saciar la tierra desierta e inculta, Y para hacer brotar la tierna hierba?

to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to grow?

28 ¿ Tiene padre la lluvia? ¿O quién engendra las gotas del rocío?

Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?

29 ¿ De qué seno sale el hielo? Y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la da a luz,

Out of whose womb came the ice? The gray frost of the sky, who has given birth to it?

30 C uando las aguas se endurecen a manera de piedra, Y se congela la superficie del mar?

The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.

31 ¿ Podrás tú atar los lazos de las Pléyades, O desatar las ligaduras de Orión?

“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?

32 ¿ Sacarás tú a su tiempo las constelaciones del Zodíaco, O guiarás a la Osa Mayor con sus hijos?

Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?

33 ¿ Conoces las leyes de los cielos? ¿Dispondrás tú sus poderes sobre la tierra?

Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?

34 ¿ Alzarás tú a las nubes tu voz, Para que te cubra muchedumbre de aguas?

“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover you?

35 ¿ Enviarás tú los relámpagos, para que ellos vayan? ¿Y te dirán ellos: Henos aquí?

Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are?’

36 ¿ Quién puso sabiduría en la nube? ¿O quién dio al meteoro inteligencia?

Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?

37 ¿ Quién puso por cuenta las nubes con sabiduría? Y los odres de los cielos, ¿quién los hace vaciar,

Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of the sky,

38 C uando el polvo se ha convertido en dureza, Y los terrones se han pegado unos con otros?

when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?

39 ¿ Cazarás tú la presa para el león? ¿Saciarás el hambre de los leoncillos,

“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

40 C uando están echados en sus guaridas, O se agazapan en la maleza para acechar?

when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?

41 ¿ Quién prepara al cuervo su alimento, Cuando sus polluelos claman a Dios, Y andan alocados por falta de comida?

Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
