1 D e siete años era Joás cuando comenzó a reinar, y cuarenta años reinó en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Sibyá, de Beerseba.

Joash was seven years old when he began to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Zibiah, of Beersheba.

2 E hizo Joás lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová todos los días de Joyadá el sacerdote.

Joash did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

3 Y Joyadá tomó para él dos mujeres; y engendró hijos e hijas.

Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he became the father of sons and daughters.

4 D espués de esto, aconteció que Joás decidió restaurar la casa de Jehová.

After this, Joash intended to restore Yahweh’s house.

5 Y reunió a los sacerdotes y los levitas, y les dijo: Salid por las ciudades de Judá, y recoged dinero de todo Israel, para que cada año sea reparada la casa de vuestro Dios; y vosotros poned diligencia en el asunto. Pero los levitas no pusieron diligencia.

He gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather money to repair the house of your God from all Israel from year to year. See that you expedite this matter.” However the Levites didn’t do it right away.

6 P or lo cual el rey llamó al sumo sacerdote Joyadá y le dijo: ¿Por qué no has procurado que los levitas traigan de Judá y de Jerusalén la ofrenda que Moisés siervo de Jehová impuso a la congregación de Israel para el tabernáculo del testimonio?

The king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, “Why haven’t you required of the Levites to bring in the tax of Moses the servant of Yahweh, and of the assembly of Israel, out of Judah and out of Jerusalem, for the tent of the testimony?”

7 P orque la impía Atalyá y sus hijos habían arruinado la casa de Dios, y además habían empleado en los ídolos todas las cosas consagradas de la casa de Jehová.

For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up God’s house; and they also gave all the dedicated things of Yahweh’s house to the Baals.

8 M andó, pues, el rey que hiciesen un cofre, que pusieron fuera, a la puerta de la casa de Jehová;

So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of Yahweh’s house.

9 e hicieron pregonar en Judá y en Jerusalén, que trajesen a Jehová la ofrenda que Moisés siervo de Dios había impuesto a Israel en el desierto.

They made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for Yahweh the tax that Moses the servant of God laid on Israel in the wilderness.

10 Y todos los jefes y todo el pueblo se alegraron, y trajeron ofrendas, y las echaron en el cofre hasta llenarlo.

All the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.

11 Y cuando venía el tiempo para llevar el cofre al secretario del rey por mano de los levitas, cuando veían que había mucho dinero, venía el escriba del rey, y el que estaba puesto por el sumo sacerdote, y llevaban el cofre, y lo vaciaban, y lo volvían a su lugar. Así lo hacían de día en día, y recogían mucho dinero,

It was so, that whenever the chest was brought to the king’s officers by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the chief priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

12 y el rey y Joyadá lo daban a los que hacían el servicio de la casa de Jehová; y tomaban a sueldo canteros y carpinteros que reparasen la casa de Jehová, y artífices en hierro y bronce para componer la casa.

The king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of Yahweh’s house; and they hired masons and carpenters to restore Yahweh’s house, and also such as worked iron and brass to repair Yahweh’s house.

13 H acían, pues, los artesanos la obra, y por sus manos la obra fue restaurada, y restituyeron la casa de Dios a su antigua condición, y la consolidaron.

So the workmen worked, and the work of repairing went forward in their hands, and they set up God’s house in its state, and strengthened it.

14 Y cuando terminaron, trajeron al rey y a Joyadá lo que quedaba del dinero, e hicieron de él utensilios para el servicio, morteros, cucharas, vasos de oro y de plata. Y sacrificaban holocaustos continuamente en la casa de Jehová todos los días de Joyadá.

When they had made an end, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, of which were made vessels for Yahweh’s house, even vessels with which to minister and to offer, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. They offered burnt offerings in Yahweh’s house continually all the days of Jehoiada.

15 M as Joyadá envejeció, y murió lleno de días; de ciento treinta años era cuando murió.

But Jehoiada grew old and was full of days, and he died; one hundred thirty years old was he when he died.

16 Y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David con los reyes, por cuanto había hecho mucho bien en Israel, para Dios, y para su casa.

They buried him in David’s city among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.

17 M uerto Joyadá, vinieron los príncipes de Judá y ofrecieron obediencia al rey; y el rey los oyó.

Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king listened to them.

18 Y desampararon la casa de Jehová el Dios de sus padres, y sirvieron a los símbolos de Aserá y a las imágenes esculpidas. Entonces la ira de Dios vino sobre Judá y Jerusalén por este pecado suyo.

They abandoned the house of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and the idols; and wrath came on Judah and Jerusalem for this their guiltiness.

19 Y les envió profetas para que los volviesen a Jehová, los cuales les amonestaron; mas ellos no los escucharon.

Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again to Yahweh; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.

20 E ntonces el Espíritu de Dios vino sobre Zacarías hijo del sacerdote Joyadá; y presentándose delante del pueblo, les dijo: Así ha dicho Dios: ¿Por qué quebrantáis los mandamientos de Jehová? No os vendrá bien por ello; porque por haber dejado a Jehová, él también os abandonará.

The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God, ‘Why do you disobey Yahweh’s commandments, so that you can’t prosper? Because you have forsaken Yahweh, he has also forsaken you.’”

21 P ero ellos conspiraron contra él, y por mandato del rey lo apedrearon hasta matarlo, en el patio de la casa de Jehová.

They conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of Yahweh’s house.

22 A sí el rey Joás no se acordó de la misericordia que Joyadá padre de Zacarías había hecho con él, sino que mató a su hijo, quien dijo al morir: Jehová lo vea y lo demande.

Thus Joash the king didn’t remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. When he died, he said, “May Yahweh look at it, and repay it.”

23 A la vuelta del año subió contra él el ejército de Siria; y vinieron a Judá y a Jerusalén, y mataron a todos los principales del pueblo, y enviaron todo el botín al rey a Damasco.

At the end of the year, the army of the Syrians came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all their plunder to the king of Damascus.

24 P orque aunque el ejército de Siria había venido con poca gente, Jehová entregó en sus manos un ejército muy numeroso, por cuanto habían dejado a Jehová el Dios de sus padres. Así hicieron justicia contra Joás.

For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and Yahweh delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment on Joash.

25 Y cuando se fueron los sirios, lo dejaron agobiado por sus dolencias; y conspiraron contra él sus siervos a causa de la sangre de los hijos de Joyadá el sacerdote, y lo hirieron en su cama, y murió. Y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David, pero no en los sepulcros de los reyes.

When they were departed for him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in David’s city, but they didn’t bury him in the tombs of the kings.

26 L os que conspiraron contra él fueron Zabad hijo de Simeat, la amonita, y Jozabad hijo de Simrit, la moabita.

These are those who conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

27 E n cuanto a los hijos de Joás, y la multiplicación que hizo de las rentas, y la restauración de la casa de Dios, he aquí está escrito en la historia del libro de los reyes. Y reinó en su lugar Amasías, su hijo.

Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid on him, and the rebuilding of God’s house, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. Amaziah his son reigned in his place.
