1 C uando oyeron estas cosas todos los reyes que estaban a este lado del Jordán, así en las montañas como en los llanos, y en toda la costa del Mar Grande delante del Líbano, los heteos, amorreos, cananeos, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos,

When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it

2 s e concertaron para pelear contra Josué e Israel. Engaño de los gabaonitas

they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

3 M as los moradores de Gabaón, cuando oyeron lo que Josué había hecho a Jericó y a Hay,

But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,

4 u saron de astucia; pues fueron y se fingieron embajadores, y tomaron sacos viejos sobre sus asnos, y cueros viejos de vino, rotos y remendados,

they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and old, torn-up and bound up wine skins,

5 y sandalias viejas y recosidas en sus pies, con vestidos viejos sobre sí; y todo el pan que traían para el camino era seco y mohoso.

and old and patched shoes on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.

6 Y vinieron a Josué al campamento en Gilgal, y le dijeron a él y a los de Israel: Nosotros venimos de tierra muy lejana; haced, pues, ahora alianza con nosotros.

They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us.”

7 Y los de Israel respondieron a los heveos: Quizás habitáis en medio de nosotros. ¿Cómo, pues, podremos hacer alianza con vosotros?

The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “What if you live among us. How could we make a covenant with you?”

8 E llos respondieron a Josué: Nosotros somos tus siervos. Y Josué les dijo: ¿Quiénes sois vosotros, y de dónde venís?

They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where do you come from?”

9 Y ellos respondieron: Tus siervos han venido de tierra muy lejana, por causa del nombre de Jehová tu Dios; porque hemos oído su fama, y todo lo que hizo en Egipto,

They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt,

10 y todo lo que hizo a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán: a Sehón rey de Hesbón, y a Og rey de Basán, que estaba en Astarot.

and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

11 P or lo cual nuestros ancianos y todos los moradores de nuestra tierra nos dijeron: Tomad en vuestras manos provisión para el camino, e id al encuentro de ellos, y decidles: Nosotros somos vuestros siervos; haced ahora alianza con nosotros.

Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take supplies in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them. Tell them, “We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us.”’

12 E ste nuestro pan lo tomamos caliente de nuestras casas para el camino el día que salimos para venir a vosotros; y helo aquí ahora ya seco y mohoso.

This our bread we took hot for our supplies out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become moldy.

13 E stos cueros de vino también los llenamos nuevos; helos aquí ya rotos; también estos nuestros vestidos y nuestras sandalias están ya viejos a causa de lo muy largo del camino.

These wine skins, which we filled, were new; and behold, they are torn. These our garments and our shoes have become old because of the very long journey.”

14 Y los hombres de Israel aceptaron sus provisiones, sin consultar el oráculo de Jehová.

The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth.

15 Y Josué hizo paz con ellos, y celebró con ellos alianza concediéndoles la vida; y también lo juraron los príncipes de la congregación.

Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them.

16 P asados tres días después que hicieron alianza con ellos, oyeron que eran sus vecinos, y que habitaban en medio de ellos.

At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.

17 Y salieron los hijos de Israel, y al tercer día llegaron a las ciudades de ellos; y sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Cafirá, Beerot y Quiryat-jearim.

The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.

18 Y no los mataron los hijos de Israel, por cuanto los príncipes de la congregación les habían jurado por Jehová el Dios de Israel. Y toda la congregación murmuraba contra los príncipes.

The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes.

19 M as todos los príncipes respondieron a toda la congregación: Nosotros les hemos jurado por Jehová Dios de Israel; por tanto, ahora no les podemos tocar.

But all the princes said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. Now therefore we may not touch them.

20 E sto haremos con ellos: les dejaremos vivir, para que no venga ira sobre nosotros por causa del juramento que les hemos hecho.

We will do this to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”

21 D ijeron, pues, de ellos los príncipes: Dejadlos vivir; pero que sean leñadores y aguadores para toda la congregación. Así les concedieron la vida, según les habían prometido los príncipes.

The princes said to them, “Let them live, so they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them.”

22 Y llamándolos Josué, les habló diciendo: ¿Por qué nos habéis engañado, diciendo: Habitamos muy lejos de vosotros, siendo así que moráis en medio de nosotros?

Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you live among us?

23 A hora, pues, malditos sois, y no dejará de haber de entre vosotros siervos, y quien corte la leña y saque el agua para la casa de mi Dios.

Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be slaves, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God.”

24 Y ellos respondieron a Josué y dijeron: Como fue dado a entender a tus siervos que Jehová tu Dios había mandado a Moisés su siervo que os había de dar toda la tierra, y que había de destruir a todos los moradores de la tierra delante de vosotros, por esto temimos en gran manera por nuestras vidas a causa de vosotros, e hicimos esto.

They answered Joshua, and said, “Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

25 A hora, pues, henos aquí en tu mano; lo que te pareciere bueno y recto hacer de nosotros, hazlo.

Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do.”

26 Y él lo hizo así con ellos; pues los libró de la mano de los hijos de Israel, y no los mataron.

He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them.

27 Y Josué los destinó aquel día a ser leñadores y aguadores para la congregación, y para el altar de Jehová en el lugar que Jehová eligiese, lo que son hasta hoy.

That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of Yahweh to this day, in the place which he should choose.
