1 H ijo mío, si sales fiador por tu amigo, y empeñas tu palabra en favor de un extraño,

My son, if you become surety for your friend, If you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,

2 t e has enredado con tus propias palabras; ¡eres cautivo de tus propias promesas!

You are snared by the words of your mouth; You are taken by the words of your mouth.

3 H ijo mío, has caído en manos de tu prójimo. Para librarte, tienes que hacer lo siguiente: Ve a hablar con tu prójimo, y humíllate ante él.

So do this, my son, and deliver yourself; For you have come into the hand of your friend: Go and humble yourself; Plead with your friend.

4 N o te des un momento de reposo; no cierres los ojos ni te duermas.

Give no sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids.

5 S é como gacela, y escápate del cazador; sé como un ave, y líbrate del que pone trampas.

Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, And like a bird from the hand of the fowler. The Folly of Indolence

6 P erezoso, mira a las hormigas; fíjate en sus caminos, y ponte a pensar.

Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise,

7 E llas no tienen quien las mande, ni quien les dé órdenes ni las gobierne.

Which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler,

8 P reparan su comida en el verano, y en el tiempo de la siega recogen su comida.

Provides her supplies in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest.

9 P erezoso, ¿cuánto más seguirás durmiendo? ¿Cuándo vas a despertar de tu sueño?

How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep?

10 U n poco de dormir, un poco de soñar, un poco de cruzarse de brazos para descansar,

A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep—

11 y así vendrán tu necesidad y tu pobreza: como un vago, como un mercenario.

So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man. The Wicked Man

12 E l que es malvado y canalla siempre anda diciendo cosas perversas;

A worthless person, a wicked man, Walks with a perverse mouth;

13 g uiña los ojos, mueve los pies, hace señas con los dedos;

He winks with his eyes, He shuffles his feet, He points with his fingers;

14 e n su corazón sólo hay perversidad, y todo el tiempo anda pensando en el mal. ¡Siempre anda sembrando discordias!

Perversity is in his heart, He devises evil continually, He sows discord.

15 P or eso, cuando menos lo espere, le sobrevendrá la ruina sin que pueda evitarlo.

Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; Suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.

16 H ay seis, y hasta siete cosas que el Señor detesta con toda el alma:

These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:

17 L os ojos altivos, la lengua mentirosa, las manos que derraman sangre inocente,

A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,

18 l a mente que maquina planes inicuos, los pies que se apresuran a hacer el mal,

A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil,

19 e l testigo falso que propaga mentiras, y el que siembra discordia entre hermanos. Advertencia contra el adulterio

A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren. Beware of Adultery

20 H ijo mío, cumple el mandamiento de tu padre, y no te apartes de la enseñanza de tu madre.

My son, keep your father’s command, And do not forsake the law of your mother.

21 L lévalos siempre dentro de tu corazón; pórtalos alrededor de tu cuello.

Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck.

22 S erán tu guía cuando camines, te protegerán cuando duermas, y te hablarán cuando despiertes.

When you roam, they will lead you; When you sleep, they will keep you; And when you awake, they will speak with you.

23 E l mandamiento es lámpara, la enseñanza es luz, y las reprensiones son el camino de la vida.

For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,

24 T e librarán de la mujer malvada, de la lengua sutil de la mujer ajena.

To keep you from the evil woman, From the flattering tongue of a seductress.

25 N o codicies en tu corazón su hermosura, ni dejes que ella te atrape con sus miradas,

Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.

26 U na ramera te cuesta un bocado de pan, pero la mujer ajena te puede costar la vida.

For by means of a harlot A man is reduced to a crust of bread; And an adulteress will prey upon his precious life.

27 ¿ Quién se echa fuego en el pecho sin que se queme su ropa?

Can a man take fire to his bosom, And his clothes not be burned?

28 ¿ Quién puede andar sobre brasas sin que se quemen sus pies?

Can one walk on hot coals, And his feet not be seared?

29 ¡ Pues tampoco puede clamar inocencia el que se acuesta con la mujer de su prójimo!

So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; Whoever touches her shall not be innocent.

30 N adie desprecia al que roba, si lo hace para calmar su apetito;

People do not despise a thief If he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving.

31 s i lo sorprenden, debe pagar siete veces y entregar todo el patrimonio de su casa,

Yet when he is found, he must restore sevenfold; He may have to give up all the substance of his house.

32 p ero cometer adulterio es no tener cabeza; quien adultera, se corrompe a sí mismo,

Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul.

33 l o que obtiene son golpes y vergüenza, y nunca logra borrar esa mancha.

Wounds and dishonor he will get, And his reproach will not be wiped away.

34 L os celos despiertan la ira del hombre, y en el día de la venganza éste no perdona;

For jealousy is a husband’s fury; Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

35 n o perdona ni se da por satisfecho, aunque se le ofrezcan muchos obsequios.

He will accept no recompense, Nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.
