1 E lías, un tisbita que vivía en Galaad, fue a decirle a Ajab: «Vive el Señor, Dios de Israel, en cuya presencia estoy, que en los años que vienen no va a llover, y ni siquiera va a caer rocío, a menos que yo lo diga.»

And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “ As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.”

2 A demás, la palabra del Señor vino a Elías y le dijo:

Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying,

3 « Sal de este lugar y vete al oriente; escóndete allí, cerca del arroyo de Querit, frente al río Jordán.

“Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan.

4 S aciarás tu sed en el arroyo, y ya he mandado a los cuervos que te lleven de comer.»

And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”

5 E lías fue obediente a la palabra del Señor, y se fue a vivir cerca del arroyo de Querit, frente al río Jordán.

So he went and did according to the word of the Lord, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan.

6 L os cuervos llegaban por la mañana y por la tarde, y le llevaban pan y carne, y él bebía agua del arroyo.

The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.

7 P ero después de algunos días el arroyo se secó, porque no había llovido sobre la tierra. Elías y la viuda de Sarepta

And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. Elijah and the Widow

8 L a palabra del Señor vino a Elías y le dijo:

Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying,

9 « Deja este lugar y vete a vivir por algún tiempo en Sarepta de Sidón. Ya he dispuesto que una viuda que allí vive te dé de comer.»

“Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”

10 E lías abandonó ese lugar y partió a Sarepta. Cuando llegó a la entrada de la ciudad, vio a una mujer que recogía leña. Era viuda. Elías la llamó y le dijo: «Te ruego que me des a beber un vaso de agua.»

So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, indeed a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup, that I may drink.”

11 Y a iba la mujer por el agua, cuando Elías la llamó y le dijo: «También te ruego que me traigas un poco de pan.»

And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

12 P ero ella le respondió: «Te juro por el Señor, tu Dios, que no he cocido pan. Sólo me queda un poco de harina en la tinaja, y unas gotas de aceite en una vasija. Con los leños que me viste recoger, voy a cocer el último pan para mi hijo y para mí. Después de comerlo, nos dejaremos morir.»

So she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”

13 P ero Elías le dijo: «No tengas miedo. Ve y haz lo que quieres hacer, pero antes cuece una pequeña torta bajo el rescoldo, y tráemela; después cocerás pan para ti y para tu hijo.

And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son.

14 E l Señor, el Dios de Israel, me ha dicho: “No va a faltar harina en la tinaja, ni va a disminuir el aceite de la vasija, hasta el día en que el Señor haga llover sobre la tierra.”»

For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’”

15 L a viuda hizo lo que Elías le dijo, y los tres comieron durante muchos días.

So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days.

16 Y tal y como el Señor se lo prometió a Elías, no faltó harina en la tinaja ni bajó de nivel el aceite en la vasija.

The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke by Elijah. Elijah Revives the Widow’s Son

17 P ero, un día, el hijo de la viuda cayó gravemente enfermo y se murió.

Now it happened after these things that the son of the woman who owned the house became sick. And his sickness was so serious that there was no breath left in him.

18 E ntonces ella le dijo al profeta: «¿Qué tengo yo que ver contigo, varón de Dios? ¿Has venido a hacerme recordar mis pecados, y a hacer que mi hijo se muera?»

So she said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son?”

19 Y Elías le dijo: «Déjame ver a tu hijo.» Y se lo quitó de los brazos, y lo llevó al lugar donde él dormía, y lo recostó sobre su cama;

And he said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him out of her arms and carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.

20 l uego, clamó al Señor y le dijo: «Señor, mi Dios, ¿acaso a la viuda que me hospedó en su casa, y que me dio de comer, vas a afligirla dejando morir a su hijo?»

Then he cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow with whom I lodge, by killing her son?”

21 D icho esto, se tendió sobre el niño tres veces, mientras clamaba al Señor con estas palabras: «Señor y Dios mío, te ruego que le devuelvas la vida a este niño.»

And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him.”

22 E l Señor oyó su petición, y el alma del niño volvió a su cuerpo, y el niño recobró la vida.

Then the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived.

23 E ntonces el profeta tomó al niño y lo llevó con su madre, y le dijo: «Mira, ¡tu hijo está vivo!»

And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son lives!”

24 E ntonces la mujer le dijo: «Hoy he comprobado que tú eres un varón de Dios, y que en tus labios la palabra del Señor se hace verdad.»

Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is the truth.”
