1 A name is rather to be chosen than great riches; loving favour rather than silver and gold.

2 T he rich and poor meet together; Jehovah is the maker of them all.

O rico e o pobre têm isto em comum: o Senhor é o Criador de ambos.

3 A prudent seeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

O prudente percebe o perigo e busca refúgio; o inexperiente segue adiante e sofre as conseqüências.

4 T he reward of humility the fear of Jehovah is riches, and honour, and life.

A recompensa da humildade e do temor do Senhor são a riqueza, a honra e a vida.

5 T horns snares are in the way of the perverse: he that keepeth his soul holdeth himself far from them.

No caminho do perverso há espinhos e armadilhas; quem quer proteger a própria vida mantém-se longe dele.

6 T rain up the child according to the tenor of his way, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Instrua a criança segundo os objetivos que você tem para ela, e mesmo com o passar dos anos não se desviará deles.

7 T he rich ruleth over the poor; and the borrower is servant to the lender.

O rico domina sobre o pobre; quem toma emprestado é escravo de quem empresta.

8 H e that soweth unrighteousness shall reap iniquity, and the rod of his wrath shall have an end.

Quem semeia a injustiça colhe a maldade; o castigo da sua arrogância será completo.

9 H e that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed, for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

Quem é generoso será abençoado, pois reparte o seu pão com o pobre.

10 C ast out the scorner, and contention will depart, and strife and ignominy shall cease.

Quando se manda embora o zombador, a briga acaba; cessam as contendas e os insultos.

11 H e that loveth pureness of heart, upon whose lips is grace, the king is his friend.

Quem ama a sinceridade de coração e se expressa com elegância será amigo do rei.

12 T he eyes of Jehovah preserve knowledge; but he overthroweth the words of the unfaithful.

Os olhos do Senhor protegem o conhecimento, mas ele frustra as palavras dos infiéis.

13 T he sluggard saith, There is a lion without, I shall be killed in the streets!

O preguiçoso diz: “Há um leão lá fora!” “Serei morto na rua!”

14 T he mouth of strange women is a deep ditch: he with whom Jehovah is displeased shall fall therein.

A conversa da mulher imoral é uma cova profunda; nela cairá quem estiver sob a ira do Senhor.

15 F olly is bound in the heart of a child; the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

A insensatez está ligada ao coração da criança, mas a vara da disciplina a livrará dela.

16 H e that oppresseth the poor, it is to enrich him; he that giveth to the rich, only to want.

Tanto quem oprime o pobre para enriquecer-se como quem faz cortesia ao rico, com certeza passarão necessidade. Ditados dos Sábios

17 I ncline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart unto my knowledge.

Preste atenção e ouça os ditados dos sábios, e aplique o coração ao meu ensino.

18 F or it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee: they shall be together fitted on thy lips.

Será uma satisfação guardá-los no íntimo e tê-los todos na ponta da língua.

19 T hat thy confidence may be in Jehovah, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.

Para que você confie no Senhor, a você hoje ensinarei.

20 H ave not I written to thee excellent things, in counsels and knowledge,

Já não lhe escrevi conselhos e instruções,

21 t hat I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest carry back words of truth to them that send thee?

ensinando-lhe palavras dignas de confiança, para que você responda com a verdade a quem o enviou?

22 R ob not the poor, because he is poor, neither oppress the afflicted in the gate;

Não explore os pobres por serem pobres, nem oprima os necessitados no tribunal,

23 f or Jehovah will plead their cause, and despoil the soul of those that despoil them.

pois o Senhor será o advogado deles, e despojará da vida os que os despojarem.

24 M ake no friendship with an angry man, and go not with a furious man;

Não se associe com quem vive de mau humor, nem ande em companhia de quem facilmente se ira;

25 l est thou learn his paths, and get a snare to thy soul.

do contrário você acabará imitando essa conduta e cairá em armadilha mortal.

26 B e not of them that strike hands, of them that are sureties for debts:

Não seja como aqueles que, com um aperto de mãos, empenham-se com outros e se tornam fiadores de dívidas;

27 i f thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

se você não tem como pagá-las, por que correr o risco de perder até a cama em que dorme?

28 R emove not the ancient landmark which thy fathers have set.

Não mude de lugar os antigos marcos que limitam as propriedades e que foram colocados por seus antepassados.

29 H ast thou seen a man diligent in his work? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before the mean.
