1 A nd again the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.

Mais uma vez irou-se o Senhor contra Israel e incitou Davi contra o povo, levando-o a fazer um censo de Israel e de Judá.

2 A nd the king said to Joab the captain of the host, who was with him, Go, I pray thee, through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and count the people, that I may know the number of the people.

Então o rei disse a Joabe e aos outros comandantes do exército: “Vão por todas as tribos de Israel, de Dã a Berseba, e contem o povo, para que eu saiba quantos são”.

3 A nd Joab said to the king, May Jehovah thy God even add to the people, how many soever they be, a hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see; but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?

Joabe, porém, respondeu ao rei: “Que o Senhor, o teu Deus, multiplique o povo por cem, e que os olhos do rei, meu senhor, o vejam! Mas, por que o rei, meu senhor, deseja fazer isso?”

4 B ut the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the army. And Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.

Mas a palavra do rei prevaleceu sobre a de Joabe e sobre a dos comandantes do exército; então eles saíram da presença do rei para contar o povo de Israel.

5 A nd they passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the midst of the ravine of Gad, and toward Jaazer.

E atravessando o Jordão, começaram em Aroer, ao sul da cidade, no vale; depois foram para Gade e de lá para Jazar,

6 A nd they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and came to Dan-jaan, and to the environs of Sidon;

Gileade e Cades dos hititas, chegaram a Dã-Jaã e às proximidades de Sidom.

7 a nd they came to the fortified city of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites and of the Canaanites; and went out to the south of Judah, to Beer-sheba.

Dali seguiram na direção da fortaleza de Tiro e de todas as cidades dos heveus e dos cananeus. Por último, foram até Berseba, no Neguebe de Judá.

8 A nd they went through all the land, and came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

Percorreram todo o país e voltaram a Jerusalém ao fim de nove meses e vinte dias.

9 A nd Joab gave the sum of the number of the people to the king; and there were of Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

Então Joabe apresentou ao rei o relatório do recenseamento do povo: havia em Israel oitocentos mil homens habilitados para o serviço militar, e em Judá, quinhentos mil.

10 A nd David's heart smote him after he had numbered the people. And David said to Jehovah, I have sinned greatly in what I have done; and now, I beseech thee, Jehovah, put away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

Depois de contar o povo, Davi sentiu remorso e disse ao Senhor: “Pequei gravemente com o que fiz! Agora, Senhor, eu imploro que perdoes o pecado do teu servo, porque cometi uma grande loucura!”

11 A nd when David arose in the morning, the word of Jehovah came to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,

Levantando-se Davi pela manhã, o Senhor já tinha falado a Gade, o vidente dele:

12 G o and say to David, Thus saith Jehovah: I impose on thee three; choose one of them that I may do it unto thee.

“Vá dizer a Davi: Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Estou lhe dando três opções de punição; escolha uma delas, e eu a executarei contra você’”.

13 A nd Gad came to David, and told him, and said to him, Shall seven years of famine come to thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine adversaries while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days' pestilence in thy land? Now be aware and consider what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

Então Gade foi a Davi e lhe perguntou: “O que você prefere: três anos de fome em sua terra; três meses fugindo de seus adversários, que o perseguirão; ou três dias de praga em sua terra? Pense bem e diga-me o que deverei responder àquele que me enviou”.

14 A nd David said to Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall, I pray thee, into the hand of Jehovah; for his mercies are great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.

Davi respondeu: “É grande a minha angústia! Prefiro cair nas mãos do Senhor, pois grande é a sua misericórdia, a cair nas mãos dos homens”.

15 A nd Jehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the set time; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

Então o Senhor enviou uma praga sobre Israel, desde aquela manhã até a hora que tinha determinado. E morreram setenta mil homens do povo, de Dã a Berseba.

16 A nd the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it; but Jehovah repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed among the people, It is enough: withdraw now thine hand. And the angel of Jehovah was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Quando o anjo estendeu a mão para destruir Jerusalém, o Senhor arrependeu-se de trazer essa catástrofe, e disse ao anjo destruidor: “Pare! Já basta!” Naquele momento o anjo do Senhor estava perto da eira de Araúna, o jebuseu.

17 A nd David spoke to Jehovah when he saw the angel that smote among the people, and said, Behold, it is I that have sinned, and it is I that have committed iniquity; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be on me, and on my father's house!

Ao ver o anjo que estava matando o povo, disse Davi ao Senhor: “Fui eu que pequei e cometi iniqüidade. Estes não passam de ovelhas. O que eles fizeram? Que o teu castigo caia sobre mim e sobre a minha família!” Davi Constrói um Altar

18 A nd Gad came that day to David, and said to him, Go up, rear an altar to Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Naquele mesmo dia Gade foi dizer a Davi: “Vá e edifique um altar ao Senhor na eira de Araúna, o jebuseu”.

19 A nd David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as Jehovah had commanded.

Davi foi para lá, em obediência à ordem que Gade tinha dado em nome do Senhor.

20 A nd Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on towards him; and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

Quando Araúna viu o rei e seus soldados vindo ao encontro dele, saiu e prostrou-se perante o rei, rosto em terra,

21 A nd Araunah said, Why is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar to Jehovah, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

e disse: “Por que o meu senhor e rei veio ao seu servo?” Respondeu Davi: “Para comprar sua eira e edificar nela um altar ao Senhor, para que cesse a praga no meio do povo”.

22 A nd Araunah said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer up that which is good in his sight: see, oxen for the burnt-offering, and the threshing-sledges and implements of the oxen for wood.

Araúna disse a Davi: “O meu senhor e rei pode ficar com o que desejar e oferecê-lo em sacrifício. Aqui estão os bois para o holocausto, e o debulhador e o jugo dos bois para a lenha.

23 A ll these things, O king, doth Araunah give to the king. And Araunah said to the king, Jehovah thy God accept thee.

Ó rei, eu dou tudo isso a ti”. E acrescentou: “Que o Senhor, o teu Deus, aceite a tua oferta”.

24 A nd the king said to Araunah, No; but I will in any case buy of thee at a price: neither will I offer up to Jehovah my God burnt-offerings without cost. And David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

Mas o rei respondeu a Araúna: “Não! Faço questão de pagar o preço justo. Não oferecerei ao Senhor, o meu Deus, holocaustos que não me custem nada”, e comprou a eira e os bois por cinqüenta peças de prata.

25 A nd David built there an altar to Jehovah, and offered up burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. And Jehovah was propitious to the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

Davi edificou ali um altar ao Senhor e ofereceu holocaustos e sacrifícios de comunhão. Então o Senhor aceitou as súplicas em favor da terra e terminou a praga que destruía Israel.
