1 A nd Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 C an a man be profitable to God? surely it is unto himself that the wise man is profitable.

3 I s it any pleasure to the Almighty if thou art righteous? And is it gain that thou makest thy ways perfect?

Que prazer você daria ao Todo-poderoso se você fosse justo? Que é que ele ganharia se os seus caminhos fossem irrepreensíveis?

4 W ill he reason with thee for fear of thee? Will he enter with thee into judgment?

“É por sua piedade que ele o repreende e lhe faz acusações?

5 I s not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities without end?

Não é grande a sua maldade? Não são infindos os seus pecados?

6 F or thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked.

Sem motivo você exigia penhores dos seus irmãos; você despojava das roupas os que quase nenhuma tinham.

7 T hou hast not given water to the fainting to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

Você não deu água ao sedento e reteve a comida do faminto,

8 B ut the powerful man, he had the land; and the man of high rank dwelt in it.

sendo você poderoso, dono de terras e delas vivendo, e honrado diante de todos.

9 W idows hast thou sent empty away, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

Você mandou embora de mãos vazias as viúvas e quebrou a força dos órfãos.

10 T herefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

Por isso está cercado de armadilhas e o perigo repentino o apavora.

11 O r darkness, that thou canst not see, and floods of waters cover thee.

Também por isso você se vê envolto em escuridão que o cega, e o cobrem as águas, em tremenda inundação.

12 I s not +God in the height of the heavens? And behold the summit of the stars: how exalted are they!

“Não está Deus nas alturas dos céus? E em que altura estão as estrelas mais distantes!

13 A nd thou sayest, What doth God know? will he judge through the dark cloud?

Contudo, você diz: ‘O que sabe Deus? Poderá julgar através de tão grande escuridão?

14 T hick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh on the vault of the heavens.

Nuvens espessas o cobrem, e ele não pode ver-nos quando percorre a abóbada dos céus’.

15 D ost thou mark the ancient path which wicked men have trodden?

Você vai continuar no velho caminho que os perversos palmilharam?

16 W ho were carried off before the time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood;

Estes foram levados antes da hora; seus alicerces foram arrastados por uma enchente.

17 W ho said unto God, Depart from us! and what could the Almighty do to them?

Eles disseram a Deus: ‘Deixa-nos! O que o Todo-poderoso poderá fazer conosco?’

18 Y et he filled their houses with good. But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

Contudo, foi ele que encheu de bens as casas deles; por isso fico longe do conselho dos ímpios.

19 T he righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn:

“Os justos vêem a ruína deles, e se regozijam; os inocentes zombam deles, dizendo:

20 I s not he who rose against us destroyed, and doth not the fire consume his residue?

‘Certo é que os nossos inimigos foram destruídos, e o fogo devorou a sua riqueza’.

21 R econcile thyself now with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

“Sujeite-se a Deus, fique em paz com ele, e a prosperidade virá a você.

22 R eceive, I pray thee, instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.

Aceite a instrução que vem da sua boca e ponha no coração as suas palavras.

23 I f thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up. If thou remove unrighteousness far from thy tents,

Se você voltar para o Todo-poderoso, voltará ao seu lugar. Se afastar da sua tenda a injustiça,

24 A nd put the precious ore with the dust, and Ophir among the stones of the torrents,

lançar ao pó as suas pepitas, o seu ouro puro de Ofir às rochas dos vales,

25 T hen the Almighty will be thy precious ore, and silver heaped up unto thee;

o Todo-poderoso será o seu ouro, será para você prata seleta.

26 Y ea, then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto +God:

É certo que você achará prazer no Todo-poderoso e erguerá o rosto para Deus.

27 T hou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows;

A ele orará, e ele o ouvirá, e você cumprirá os seus votos.

28 A nd thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and light shall shine upon thy ways.

O que você decidir se fará, e a luz brilhará em seus caminhos.

29 W hen they are made low, then thou shalt say, Rise up! and he shall save him that is of downcast eyes.

Quando os homens forem humilhados e você disser: ‘Levanta-os!’, ele salvará o abatido.

30 h im that is not innocent shall he deliver; yea, he shall be delivered by the pureness of thy hands.

Livrará até o que não é inocente, que será liberto graças à pureza que há em você, nas suas mãos”.
