1 A name is rather to be chosen than great riches; loving favour rather than silver and gold.

Ein guter Ruf ist köstlicher denn großer Reichtum, und Gunst besser denn Silber und Gold.

2 T he rich and poor meet together; Jehovah is the maker of them all.

Reiche und Arme müssen untereinander sein; der HERR hat sie alle gemacht.

3 A prudent seeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

Der Kluge sieht das Unglück und verbirgt sich; die Unverständigen gehen hindurch und werden beschädigt.

4 T he reward of humility the fear of Jehovah is riches, and honour, and life.

Wo man leidet in des HERRN Furcht, da ist Reichtum, Ehre und Leben.

5 T horns snares are in the way of the perverse: he that keepeth his soul holdeth himself far from them.

Stachel und Stricke sind auf dem Wege des Verkehrten; wer sich aber davon fernhält, bewahrt sein Leben.

6 T rain up the child according to the tenor of his way, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Wie man einen Knaben gewöhnt, so läßt er nicht davon, wenn er alt wird.

7 T he rich ruleth over the poor; and the borrower is servant to the lender.

Der Reiche herrscht über die Armen; und wer borgt, ist des Leihers Knecht.

8 H e that soweth unrighteousness shall reap iniquity, and the rod of his wrath shall have an end.

Wer Unrecht sät, der wird Mühsal ernten und wird durch die Rute seiner Bosheit umkommen.

9 H e that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed, for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

Ein gütiges Auge wird gesegnet; denn er gibt von seinem Brot den Armen.

10 C ast out the scorner, and contention will depart, and strife and ignominy shall cease.

Treibe den Spötter aus, so geht der Zank weg, so hört auf Hader und Schmähung.

11 H e that loveth pureness of heart, upon whose lips is grace, the king is his friend.

Wer ein treues Herz und liebliche Rede hat, des Freund ist der König.

12 T he eyes of Jehovah preserve knowledge; but he overthroweth the words of the unfaithful.

Die Augen des HERRN behüten guten Rat; aber die Worte des Verächters verkehrt er.

13 T he sluggard saith, There is a lion without, I shall be killed in the streets!

Der Faule spricht: Es ist ein Löwe draußen, ich möchte erwürgt werden auf der Gasse.

14 T he mouth of strange women is a deep ditch: he with whom Jehovah is displeased shall fall therein.

Der Huren Mund ist eine Tiefe Grube; wem der HERR ungnädig ist, der fällt hinein.

15 F olly is bound in the heart of a child; the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Torheit steckt dem Knaben im Herzen; aber die Rute der Zucht wird sie fern von ihm treiben.

16 H e that oppresseth the poor, it is to enrich him; he that giveth to the rich, only to want.

Wer dem Armen Unrecht tut, daß seines Guts viel werde, der wird auch einem Reichen geben, und Mangel haben.

17 I ncline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart unto my knowledge.

Neige deine Ohren und höre die Worte der Weisen und nimm zu Herzen meine Lehre.

18 F or it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee: they shall be together fitted on thy lips.

Denn es wird dir sanft tun, wo du sie wirst im Sinne behalten und sie werden miteinander durch deinen Mund wohl geraten.

19 T hat thy confidence may be in Jehovah, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.

Daß deine Hoffnung sei auf den HERRN, erinnere ich dich an solches heute dir zugut.

20 H ave not I written to thee excellent things, in counsels and knowledge,

Habe ich dir's nicht mannigfaltig vorgeschrieben mit Rat und Lehren,

21 t hat I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest carry back words of truth to them that send thee?

daß ich dir zeigte einen gewissen Grund der Wahrheit, daß du recht antworten könntest denen, die dich senden?

22 R ob not the poor, because he is poor, neither oppress the afflicted in the gate;

Beraube den Armen nicht, ob er wohl arm ist, und unterdrücke den Elenden nicht im Tor.

23 f or Jehovah will plead their cause, and despoil the soul of those that despoil them.

Denn der HERR wird ihre Sache führen und wird ihre Untertreter untertreten.

24 M ake no friendship with an angry man, and go not with a furious man;

Geselle dich nicht zum Zornigen und halte dich nicht zu einem grimmigen Mann;

25 l est thou learn his paths, and get a snare to thy soul.

du möchtest seinen Weg lernen und an deiner Seele Schaden nehmen.

26 B e not of them that strike hands, of them that are sureties for debts:

Sei nicht bei denen, die ihre Hand verhaften und für Schuld Bürge werden;

27 i f thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

denn wo du es nicht hast, zu bezahlen, so wird man dir dein Bett unter dir wegnehmen.

28 R emove not the ancient landmark which thy fathers have set.

Verrücke nicht die vorigen Grenzen, die deine Väter gemacht haben.

29 H ast thou seen a man diligent in his work? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before the mean.

Siehst du einen Mann behend in seinem Geschäft, der wird vor den Königen stehen und wird nicht stehen vor den Unedlen.
