1 W hen thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider well who is before thee;

Wenn du sitzest und issest mit einem Herrn, so merke, wen du vor dir hast,

2 a nd put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

und setze ein Messer an deine Kehle, wenn du gierig bist.

3 B e not desirous of his dainties; for they are deceitful food.

Wünsche dir nichts von seinen feinen Speisen; denn es ist falsches Brot.

4 W eary not thyself to become rich; cease from thine own intelligence:

Bemühe dich nicht reich zu werden und laß ab von deinen Fündlein.

5 w ilt thou set thine eyes upon it, it is gone; for indeed it maketh itself wings and it flieth away as an eagle towards the heavens.

Laß dein Augen nicht fliegen nach dem, was du nicht haben kannst; denn dasselbe macht sich Flügel wie ein Adler und fliegt gen Himmel.

6 E at thou not the food of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties.

Iß nicht Brot bei einem Neidischen und wünsche dir von seinen feinen Speisen nichts.

7 F or as he thinketh in his soul, so is he. Eat and drink! will he say unto thee; but his heart is not with thee.

Denn wie ein Gespenst ist er inwendig; er spricht: Iß und trink! und sein Herz ist doch nicht mit dir.

8 T hy morsel which thou hast eaten must thou vomit up, and thou wilt have wasted thy sweet words.

Deine Bissen die du gegessen hattest, mußt du ausspeien, und mußt deine freundlichen Worte verloren haben.

9 S peak not in the ears of a foolish, for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

Rede nicht vor des Narren Ohren; denn er verachtet die Klugheit deiner Rede.

10 R emove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

Verrücke nicht die vorigen Grenzen und gehe nicht auf der Waisen Acker.

11 f or their redeemer is mighty; he will plead their cause against thee.

Denn ihr Erlöser ist mächtig; der wird ihre Sache wider dich ausführen.

12 A pply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

Gib dein Herz zur Zucht und deine Ohren zu vernünftiger Rede.

13 W ithhold not correction from the child; for thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die:

Laß nicht ab den Knaben zu züchtigen; denn wenn du ihn mit der Rute haust, so wird man ihn nicht töten.

14 t hou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

Du haust ihn mit der Rute; aber du errettest seine Seele vom Tode.

15 M y son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine;

Mein Sohn, wenn dein Herz weise ist, so freut sich auch mein Herz;

16 a nd my reins shall exult, when thy lips speak right things.

und meine Nieren sind froh, wenn deine Lippen reden, was recht ist.

17 L et not thy heart envy sinners, but in the fear of Jehovah all the day;

Dein Herz folge nicht den Sündern, sondern sei täglich in der Furcht des HERRN.

18 f or surely there is a result, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

Denn es wird dir hernach gut sein, und dein Warten wird nicht trügen.

19 T hou, my son, hear and be wise, and direct thy heart in the way.

Höre, mein Sohn, und sei weise und richte dein Herz in den Weg.

20 B e not among winebibbers, among riotous eaters of flesh.

Sei nicht unter den Säufern und Schlemmern;

21 F or the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness clotheth with rags.

denn die Säufer und Schlemmer verarmen, und ein Schläfer muß zerrissene Kleider tragen.

22 H earken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

Gehorche deinem Vater, der dich gezeugt hat, und verachte deine Mutter nicht, wenn sie alt wird.

23 B uy the truth, and sell it not; wisdom, and instruction, and intelligence.

Kaufe Wahrheit, und verkaufe sie nicht, Weisheit, Zucht und Verstand.

24 T he father of a righteous shall greatly rejoice, and he that begetteth a wise shall have joy of him:

Der Vater eines Gerechten freut sich; und wer einen Weisen gezeugt hat, ist fröhlich darüber.

25 l et thy father and thy mother have joy, and let her that bore thee rejoice.

Laß sich deinen Vater und deine Mutter freuen, und fröhlich sein, die dich geboren hat.

26 M y son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

Gib mir, mein Sohn, dein Herz, und laß deinen Augen meine Wege wohl gefallen.

27 F or a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

Denn eine Hure ist eine tiefe Grube, und eine Ehebrecherin ist ein enger Brunnen.

28 S he also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the treacherous among men.

Auch lauert sie wie ein Räuber, und die Frechen unter den Menschen sammelt sie zu sich.

29 W ho hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who contentions? Who complaining? Who wounds without cause? Who redness of eyes?

Wo ist Weh? wo ist Leid? wo ist Zank? wo ist Klagen? wo sind Wunden ohne Ursache? wo sind trübe Augen?

30 — They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine.

Wo man beim Wein liegt und kommt, auszusaufen, was eingeschenkt ist.

31 L ook not upon the wine when it is red, when it sparkleth in the cup, and goeth down smoothly:

Siehe den Wein nicht an, daß er so rot ist und im Glase so schön steht. Er geht glatt ein;

32 a t the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

aber danach beißt er wie eine Schlange und sticht wie eine Otter.

33 T hine eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall speak froward things;

So werden deine Augen nach andern Weibern sehen, und dein Herz wird verkehrte Dinge reden,

34 a nd thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, and as he that lieth down upon the top of a mast:

und wirst sein wie einer, der mitten im Meer schläft, und wie einer schläft oben auf dem Mastbaum.

35 — ''They have smitten me, I am not sore; they have beaten me, I knew it not. When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.''

"Sie schlagen mich, aber es tut mir nicht weh; sie klopfen mich, aber ich fühle es nicht. Wann will ich aufwachen, daß ich's mehr treibe?"
