Wo Stolz ist, da ist auch Schmach; aber Weisheit ist bei den Demütigen.

3 T he integrity of the upright guideth them; but the crookedness of the unfaithful destroyeth them.

Unschuld wird die Frommen leiten; aber die Bosheit wird die Verächter verstören.

4 W ealth profiteth not in the day of wrath; but righteousness delivereth from death.

Gut hilft nicht am Tage des Zorns; aber Gerechtigkeit errettet vom Tod.

5 T he righteousness of the perfect maketh plain his way; but the wicked falleth by his own wickedness.

Die Gerechtigkeit des Frommen macht seinen Weg eben; aber der Gottlose wird fallen durch sein gottloses Wesen.

6 T he righteousness of the upright delivereth them; but the treacherous are taken in their own craving.

Die Gerechtigkeit der Frommen wird sie erretten; aber die Verächter werden gefangen in ihrer Bosheit.

7 W hen a wicked man dieth, expectation shall perish; and the hope of evil perisheth.

Wenn der gottlose Mensch stirbt, ist seine Hoffnung verloren und das Harren des Ungerechten wird zunichte.

8 T he righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.

Der Gerechte wird aus seiner Not erlöst, und der Gottlose kommt an seine Statt.

9 W ith his mouth a hypocrite destroyeth his neighbour; but through knowledge are the righteous delivered.

Durch den Mund des Heuchlers wird sein Nächster verderbt; aber die Gerechten merken's und werden erlöst.

10 W hen it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth; and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

Eine Stadt freut sich, wenn's den Gerechten wohl geht; und wenn die Gottlosen umkommen, wird man froh.

11 B y the blessing of the upright the city is exalted; but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

Durch den Segen der Frommen wird eine Stadt erhoben; aber durch den Mund der Gottlosen wird sie zerbrochen.

12 H e that despiseth his neighbour is void of heart; but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.

Wer seinen Nächsten schändet, ist ein Narr; aber ein verständiger Mann schweigt still.

13 H e that goeth about talebearing revealeth secrets; but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

Ein Verleumder verrät, was er heimlich weiß; aber wer eines getreuen Herzens ist, verbirgt es.

14 W here no advice is, the people fall; but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Wo nicht Rat ist, da geht das Volk unter; wo aber viel Ratgeber sind, da geht es wohl zu.

15 I t goeth ill with him that is surety for another; but he that hateth suretyship is secure.

Wer für einen andern Bürge wird, der wird Schaden haben; wer aber sich vor Geloben hütet, ist sicher.

16 A gracious woman retaineth honour; and the violent retain riches.

Ein holdselig Weib erlangt Ehre; aber die Tyrannen erlangen Reichtum.

17 T he merciful man doeth good to his own soul; but the cruel troubleth his own flesh.

Ein barmherziger Mann tut sich selber Gutes; aber ein unbarmherziger betrübt auch sein eigen Fleisch.

18 T he wicked worketh a deceitful work; but he that soweth righteousness hath a sure reward.

Der Gottlosen Arbeit wird fehlschlagen; aber wer Gerechtigkeit sät, das ist gewisses Gut.

19 A s righteousness to life, so he that pursueth evil to his own death.

Gerechtigkeit fördert zum Leben; aber dem Übel nachjagen fördert zum Tod.

20 T he perverse in heart are abomination to Jehovah; but they that are perfect in way are his delight.

Der HERR hat Greuel an den verkehrten Herzen, und Wohlgefallen an den Frommen.

21 H and for hand! an evil shall not be held innocent; but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

Den Bösen hilft nichts, wenn sie auch alle Hände zusammentäten; aber der Gerechten Same wird errettet werden.

22 A fair woman who is without discretion, is a gold ring in a swine's snout.

Ein schönes Weib ohne Zucht ist wie eine Sau mit einem goldenen Haarband.

23 T he desire of the righteous is only good; the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

Der Gerechten Wunsch muß doch wohl geraten, und der Gottlosen Hoffen wird Unglück.

24 T here is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is right, but only to want.

Einer teilt aus und hat immer mehr; ein anderer kargt, da er nicht soll, und wird doch ärmer.

25 T he liberal soul shall be made fat, and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

Die Seele, die da reichlich segnet, wird gelabt; wer reichlich tränkt, der wird auch getränkt werden.

26 H e that withholdeth corn, the people curse him; but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.

Wer Korn innehält, dem fluchen die Leute; aber Segen kommt über den, der es verkauft.

27 H e that is earnest after good seeketh favour; but he that searcheth for mischief, it shall come upon him.

Wer da Gutes sucht, dem widerfährt Gutes; wer aber nach Unglück ringt, dem wird's begegnen.

28 H e that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a leaf.

Wer sich auf seinen Reichtum verläßt, der wird untergehen; aber die Gerechten werden grünen wie ein Blatt.

29 H e that troubleth his own house shall inherit wind; and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.

Wer sein eigen Haus betrübt, der wird Wind zum Erbteil haben; und ein Narr muß ein Knecht des Weisen sein.

30 T he fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and the wise winneth souls.

Die Frucht des Gerechten ist ein Baum des Lebens, und ein Weiser gewinnt die Herzen.

31 B ehold, the righteous shall be requited on the earth: how much more the wicked and the sinner.

So der Gerechte auf Erden leiden muß, wie viel mehr der Gottlose und der Sünder!
