1 A nd Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

Então Elifaz, de Temã, respondeu:

2 S hould a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind,

“Responderia o sábio com idéias vãs, ou encheria o estômago com o vento?

3 R easoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good?

Argumentaria com palavras inúteis, com discursos sem valor?

4 Y ea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before God.

Mas você sufoca a piedade e diminui a devoção a Deus.

5 F or thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.

O seu pecado motiva a sua boca; você adota a linguagem dos astutos.

6 T hine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee.

É a sua própria boca que o condena, e não a minha; os seus próprios lábios depõem contra você.

7 A rt thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills?

“Será que você foi o primeiro a nascer? Acaso foi gerado antes das colinas?

8 H ast thou listened in the secret council of +God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself?

Você costuma ouvir o conselho secreto de Deus? Só a você pertence a sabedoria?

9 W hat knowest thou that we know not? understandest thou which is not in us?

O que você sabe, que nós não sabemos? Que compreensão tem você, que nós não temos?

10 B oth the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.

Temos do nosso lado homens de cabelos brancos, muito mais velhos que o seu pai.

11 A re the consolations of God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?

Não lhe bastam as consolações divinas e as nossas palavras amáveis?

12 W hy doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?

Por que você se deixa levar pelo coração, e por que esse brilho nos seus olhos?

13 T hat thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth?

Pois contra Deus é que você dirige a sua ira e despeja da sua boca essas palavras!

14 W hat is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

“Como o homem pode ser puro? Como pode ser justo quem nasce de mulher?

15 B ehold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight:

Pois se nem nos seus santos Deus confia, e se nem os céus são puros aos seus olhos,

16 H ow much less the abominable and corrupt,—man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water!

quanto menos o homem, que é impuro e corrupto, e que bebe iniqüidade como água.

17 I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;

“Escute-me, e eu lhe explicarei; vou dizer-lhe o que vi,

18 W hich wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden;

o que os sábios declaram sem esconder o que receberam dos seus pais,

19 U nto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

a quem foi dada a terra, e a mais ninguém; nenhum estrangeiro passou entre eles:

20 A ll his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.

O ímpio sofre tormentos a vida toda, como também o homem cruel, nos poucos anos que lhe são reservados.

21 T he sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him.

Só ouve ruídos aterrorizantes; quando se sente em paz, ladrões o atacam.

22 H e believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.

Não tem esperança de escapar das trevas; sente-se destinado ao fio da espada.

23 H e wandereth abroad for bread,—where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

Fica perambulando; é comida para os abutres; sabe muito bem que logo virão sobre ele as trevas.

24 D istress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.

A aflição e a angústia o apavoram e o dominam como um rei pronto para atacar,

25 F or he hath stretched out his hand against God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty:

porque agitou os punhos contra Deus, e desafiou o Todo-poderoso,

26 H e runneth against him, with neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers;

afrontando-o com arrogância, com um escudo grosso e resistente.

27 F or he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon flanks.

“Apesar de ter o rosto coberto de gordura e a cintura estufada de carne,

28 A nd he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps.

habitará em cidades prestes a arruinar-se, em casas inabitáveis, caindo aos pedaços.

29 H e shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth.

Nunca mais será rico; sua riqueza não durará, e os seus bens não se propagarão pela terra.

30 H e shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

Não poderá escapar das trevas; o fogo chamuscará os seus renovos, e o sopro da boca de Deus o arrebatará.

31 L et him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense;

Que ele não se iluda em confiar no que não tem valor, pois nada receberá como compensação.

32 I t shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green.

Terá completa paga antes do tempo, e os seus ramos não florescerão.

33 H e shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive.

Será como a vinha despojada de suas uvas verdes, como a oliveira que perdeu a sua floração,

34 F or the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

pois o companheirismo dos ímpios nada lhe trará, e o fogo devorará as tendas dos que gostam de subornar.

35 T hey conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

Eles concebem maldade e dão à luz a iniqüidade; seu ventre gera engano”.
