1 E ntão Elifaz, de Temã, respondeu:

And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 “ Responderia o sábio com idéias vãs, ou encheria o estômago com o vento?

Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind,

3 A rgumentaria com palavras inúteis, com discursos sem valor?

Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good?

4 M as você sufoca a piedade e diminui a devoção a Deus.

Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before God.

5 O seu pecado motiva a sua boca; você adota a linguagem dos astutos.

For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.

6 É a sua própria boca que o condena, e não a minha; os seus próprios lábios depõem contra você.

Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee.

7 “ Será que você foi o primeiro a nascer? Acaso foi gerado antes das colinas?

Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills?

8 V ocê costuma ouvir o conselho secreto de Deus? Só a você pertence a sabedoria?

Hast thou listened in the secret council of +God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself?

9 O que você sabe, que nós não sabemos? Que compreensão tem você, que nós não temos?

What knowest thou that we know not? understandest thou which is not in us?

10 T emos do nosso lado homens de cabelos brancos, muito mais velhos que o seu pai.

Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.

11 N ão lhe bastam as consolações divinas e as nossas palavras amáveis?

Are the consolations of God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?

12 P or que você se deixa levar pelo coração, e por que esse brilho nos seus olhos?

Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?

13 P ois contra Deus é que você dirige a sua ira e despeja da sua boca essas palavras!

That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth?

14 “ Como o homem pode ser puro? Como pode ser justo quem nasce de mulher?

What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

15 P ois se nem nos seus santos Deus confia, e se nem os céus são puros aos seus olhos,

Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight:

16 q uanto menos o homem, que é impuro e corrupto, e que bebe iniqüidade como água.

How much less the abominable and corrupt,—man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water!

17 “ Escute-me, e eu lhe explicarei; vou dizer-lhe o que vi,

I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;

18 o que os sábios declaram sem esconder o que receberam dos seus pais,

Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden;

19 a quem foi dada a terra, e a mais ninguém; nenhum estrangeiro passou entre eles:

Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

20 O ímpio sofre tormentos a vida toda, como também o homem cruel, nos poucos anos que lhe são reservados.

All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.

21 S ó ouve ruídos aterrorizantes; quando se sente em paz, ladrões o atacam.

The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him.

22 N ão tem esperança de escapar das trevas; sente-se destinado ao fio da espada.

He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.

23 F ica perambulando; é comida para os abutres; sabe muito bem que logo virão sobre ele as trevas.

He wandereth abroad for bread,—where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

24 A aflição e a angústia o apavoram e o dominam como um rei pronto para atacar,

Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.

25 p orque agitou os punhos contra Deus, e desafiou o Todo-poderoso,

For he hath stretched out his hand against God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty:

26 a frontando-o com arrogância, com um escudo grosso e resistente.

He runneth against him, with neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers;

27 “ Apesar de ter o rosto coberto de gordura e a cintura estufada de carne,

For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon flanks.

28 h abitará em cidades prestes a arruinar-se, em casas inabitáveis, caindo aos pedaços.

And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps.

29 N unca mais será rico; sua riqueza não durará, e os seus bens não se propagarão pela terra.

He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth.

30 N ão poderá escapar das trevas; o fogo chamuscará os seus renovos, e o sopro da boca de Deus o arrebatará.

He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

31 Q ue ele não se iluda em confiar no que não tem valor, pois nada receberá como compensação.

Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense;

32 T erá completa paga antes do tempo, e os seus ramos não florescerão.

It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green.

33 S erá como a vinha despojada de suas uvas verdes, como a oliveira que perdeu a sua floração,

He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive.

34 p ois o companheirismo dos ímpios nada lhe trará, e o fogo devorará as tendas dos que gostam de subornar.

For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

35 E les concebem maldade e dão à luz a iniqüidade; seu ventre gera engano”.

They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
