1 A llora Elifaz di Teman rispose e disse:

And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 « Il saggio risponde forse con vana scienza? Si gonfia il petto di vento?

Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind,

3 S i difende con chiacchiere inutili e con parole che non giovano a nulla?

Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good?

4 T u, poi, distruggi il timor di Dio, sminuisci la preghiera che gli è dovuta.

Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before God.

5 L a tua iniquità ti detta le parole, e adoperi il linguaggio degli astuti.

For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.

6 N on io, la tua bocca ti condanna; le tue labbra stesse depongono contro di te.

Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee.

7 S ei forse tu il primo uomo che nacque? Fosti tu formato prima dei monti?

Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills?

8 H ai forse sentito quanto si è detto nel Consiglio di Dio? Hai forse accaparrato la saggezza tutta quanta per te solo?

Hast thou listened in the secret council of +God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself?

9 C he sai tu che noi non sappiamo? Che conoscenza hai tu che non sia anche nostra?

What knowest thou that we know not? understandest thou which is not in us?

10 C i sono fra noi uomini canuti e anche vecchi più attempati di tuo padre.

Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.

11 F ai così poco caso delle consolazioni di Dio e delle dolci parole che ti abbiamo rivolte?

Are the consolations of God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?

12 D ove ti trascina il cuore, e che vogliono dire codeste torve occhiate?

Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?

13 C ome! Tu volgi la tua collera contro Dio e ti lasci uscire di bocca tali parole?

That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth?

14 C hi è mai l’uomo per essere puro, il nato di donna per essere giusto?

What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

15 E cco, Dio non si fida nemmeno dei suoi santi, i cieli non sono puri ai suoi occhi;

Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight:

16 q uanto meno quest’essere abominevole e corrotto, l’uomo, che tracanna iniquità come acqua!

How much less the abominable and corrupt,—man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water!

17 « Io voglio istruirti; porgimi ascolto e ti racconterò quello che ho visto,

I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;

18 q uello che i saggi hanno riferito senza nulla celare di quel che sapevano dai padri,

Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden;

19 a i quali soltanto è stato dato il paese; e in mezzo ai quali non è passato lo straniero.

Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

20 L ’empio è tormentato tutti i suoi giorni, e pochi sono gli anni riservati al prepotente.

All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.

21 S empre ha negli orecchi rumori spaventosi, e in piena pace gli piomba addosso il distruttore.

The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him.

22 N on ha speranza di uscire dalle tenebre, e si sente destinato alla spada.

He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.

23 V a peregrinando in cerca di pane; dove trovarne? Egli sa che gli è vicino il giorno tenebroso.

He wandereth abroad for bread,—where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

24 L e difficoltà e l’angoscia lo riempiono di paura, lo assalgono come un re pronto alla battaglia,

Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.

25 p erché ha steso la mano contro Dio, ha sfidato l’Onnipotente,

For he hath stretched out his hand against God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty:

26 g li si è slanciato audacemente contro, sotto il folto dei suoi scudi ricurvi.

He runneth against him, with neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers;

27 A veva la faccia coperta di grasso, i fianchi carichi di pinguedine;

For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon flanks.

28 s i era stabilito in città distrutte, in case disabitate, destinate a diventare mucchi di sassi.

And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps.

29 E gli non si arricchirà, la sua fortuna non sarà stabile; né le sue proprietà si stenderanno sulla terra.

He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth.

30 N on potrà liberarsi dalle tenebre, il vento infocato farà inaridire i suoi germogli e sarà portato via dal soffio della bocca di Dio.

He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

31 N on confidi nella vanità; è un’illusione; poiché avrà la vanità per ricompensa.

Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense;

32 L a sua fine verrà prima del tempo, i suoi rami non rinverdiranno più.

It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green.

33 S arà come vigna da cui si strappi l’uva ancora acerba, come l’ulivo da cui si scuota il fiore;

He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive.

34 p oiché sterile è la famiglia del profano, il fuoco divora la tenda dei corrotti.

For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

35 L ’empio concepisce malizia e partorisce rovina; egli prepara l’inganno».

They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
