1 D opo la morte di Giosuè, i figli d’Israele consultarono il Signore e dissero: «Chi di noi salirà per primo a combattere contro i Cananei?»

And it came to pass after the death of Joshua that the children of Israel asked Jehovah, saying, Which of us shall go up against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

2 I l Signore rispose: «Salirà Giuda; ecco, io ho dato il paese nelle sue mani».

And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3 A llora Giuda disse a Simeone suo fratello: «Sali con me nel paese che mi è toccato in sorte e combatteremo contro i Cananei; poi anch’io andrò con te in quello che ti è toccato in sorte». Simeone andò con lui.

And Judah said to Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, and let us fight against the Canaanites, and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot; and Simeon went with him.

4 G iuda dunque salì, e il Signore diede nelle loro mani i Cananei e i Ferezei; sconfissero a Bezec diecimila uomini.

And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they smote them in Bezek, ten thousand men.

5 T rovato Adoni-Bezec, a Bezec, l’attaccarono e sconfissero i Cananei e i Ferezei.

And they found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

6 A doni-Bezec si diede alla fuga, ma essi lo inseguirono, lo presero e gli tagliarono i pollici e gli alluci.

And Adoni-Bezek fled, and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

7 A doni-Bezec disse: «Settanta re, a cui erano stati tagliati i pollici e gli alluci, raccoglievano gli avanzi del cibo sotto la mia mensa. Quello che ho fatto io, Dio me lo rende». E lo condussero a Gerusalemme, dove morì.

And Adoni-Bezek said, Seventy kings, with their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gleaned under my table: as I have done, so God has requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

8 I figli di Giuda attaccarono Gerusalemme e la presero; passarono gli abitanti a fil di spada e incendiarono la città.

And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

9 P oi i figli di Giuda scesero a combattere contro i Cananei, che abitavano la zona montuosa, la regione meridionale e la regione bassa.

And afterwards the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the south, and in the lowland.

10 G iuda marciò contro i Cananei che abitavano a Ebron, che prima si chiamava Chiriat-Arba, e sconfisse Scesai, Aiman e Talmai.

And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron—the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-Arba; and they slew Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.

11 D i là marciò contro gli abitanti di Debir, che prima si chiamava Chiriat-Sefer.

And from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir; now the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher.

12 C aleb disse: «A chi batterà Chiriat-Sefer e la prenderà, io darò in moglie mia figlia Acsa».

And Caleb said, He that smites Kirjath-sepher and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.

13 L a prese Otniel, figlio di Chenaz, fratello minore di Caleb, e questi gli diede in moglie sua figlia Acsa.

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.

14 Q uando lei venne ad abitare con lui, persuase Otniel a lasciarle chiedere un campo a suo padre. Lei scese dall’asino e Caleb le disse: «Che vuoi?»

And it came to pass as she came, that she urged him to ask of her father the field; and she sprang down from the ass. And Caleb said to her, What wouldest thou?

15 L ei rispose: «Fammi un dono, perché tu mi hai dato una terra arida; dammi anche delle sorgenti d’acqua». Ed egli le diede le sorgenti superiori e le sorgenti sottostanti.

And she said to him, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a southern land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

16 I figli del Cheneo, suocero di Mosè, salirono dalla città delle palme, con i figli di Giuda, nel deserto di Giuda che è a mezzogiorno di Arad; andarono e si stabilirono fra il popolo.

And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, had gone up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.

17 P oi Giuda partì con Simeone suo fratello, e sconfissero i Cananei che abitavano in Sefat; distrussero interamente la città, che fu chiamata Corma.

And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it; and they called the name of the city Hormah.

18 P oi Giuda prese anche Gaza con il suo territorio, Ascalon con il suo territorio ed Ecron con il suo territorio.

And Judah took Gazah and its border, and Ashkelon and its border, and Ekron and its border.

19 I l Signore fu con Giuda, che scacciò gli abitanti della regione montuosa, ma non poté scacciare gli abitanti della pianura, perché avevano carri di ferro.

And Jehovah was with Judah; and he took possession of the hill-country, for he did not dispossess the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

20 C ome Mosè aveva detto, Ebron fu data a Caleb, che ne scacciò i tre figli di Anac. Infedeltà delle altre tribù

And they gave to Caleb Hebron, as Moses had said; and he dispossessed from thence the three sons of Anak.

21 I figli di Beniamino non scacciarono i Gebusei che abitavano Gerusalemme; perciò i Gebusei hanno abitato con i figli di Beniamino in Gerusalemme fino a oggi.

And the children of Benjamin did not dispossess the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

22 L a casa di Giuseppe salì anch’essa contro Betel, e il Signore fu con loro.

And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel; and Jehovah was with them.

23 L a casa di Giuseppe mandò a esplorare Betel, città che prima si chiamava Luz.

And the house of Joseph sent to search out Bethel; now the name of the city before was Luz.

24 G li esploratori videro un uomo che usciva dalla città e gli dissero: «Insegnaci la via per entrare nella città e noi ti tratteremo con bontà».

And the guards saw a man come forth out of the city, and said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, how may enter into the city, and we will shew thee kindness.

25 E gli insegnò loro la via per entrare nella città, ed essi passarono la città a fil di spada, ma lasciarono andare quell’uomo con tutta la sua famiglia.

And he shewed them how to enter into the city. And they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

26 Q uell’uomo andò nel paese degli Ittiti e vi costruì una città, che chiamò Luz, nome che essa porta anche al giorno d’oggi.

And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.

27 A nche Manasse non scacciò gli abitanti di Bet-Sean e delle città del suo territorio, né quelli di Taanac e delle città del suo territorio, né quelli di Dor e delle città del suo territorio, né quelli d’Ibleam e delle città del suo territorio, né quelli di Meghiddo e delle città del suo territorio, perché i Cananei erano decisi a restare in quel paese.

And Manasseh did not dispossess Beth-shean and its dependent villages, nor Taanach and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its dependent villages; and the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

28 P erò, quando Israele fu abbastanza forte, assoggettò i Cananei a servitù, ma non li scacciò del tutto.

And it came to pass when Israel became strong, that they made the Canaanites tributary; but they did not utterly dispossess them.

29 A nche Efraim non scacciò i Cananei che abitavano a Ghezer, perciò i Cananei abitarono a Ghezer in mezzo a Efraim.

And Ephraim did not dispossess the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt among them in Gezer.

30 Z abulon non scacciò gli abitanti di Chitron, né gli abitanti di Naalol; e i Cananei abitarono in mezzo a Zabulon e furono costretti a lavorare per gli Israeliti.

Zebulun did not dispossess the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

31 A scer non scacciò gli abitanti di Acco, né gli abitanti di Sidone, né quelli di Alab, di Aczib, di Chelba, di Afic di Reob;

Asher did not dispossess the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor Ahlab, nor Achzib, nor Helbah, nor Aphik, nor Rehob;

32 i figli di Ascer si stabilirono in mezzo ai Cananei che abitavano il paese, perché non li scacciarono.

and the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not dispossess them.

33 N eftali non scacciò gli abitanti di Bet-Semes, né gli abitanti di Bet-Anat, e si stabilì in mezzo ai Cananei che abitavano il paese; ma gli abitanti di Bet-Semes e di Bet-Anat furono da loro assoggettati a servitù.

Naphtali did not dispossess the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; and he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, but the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries to them.

34 G li Amorei respinsero i figli di Dan nella regione montuosa e non li lasciarono scendere nella valle.

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country, for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley.

35 G li Amorei si mostrarono decisi a restare ad Ar-Cheres, ad Aialon e a Saalbim; ma la mano della casa di Giuseppe si aggravò su di loro tanto che furono assoggettati a servitù.

And the Amorites would dwell on mount Heres, in Ajalon and in Shaalbim; but the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, and they became tributaries.

36 I l confine degli Amorei si estendeva dalla salita di Acrabbim, andando da Sela in su, verso il nord.

And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upwards.
