1 O ra, fratelli, vogliamo farvi conoscere la grazia che Dio ha concessa alle chiese di Macedonia,

But we make known to you, brethren, the grace of God bestowed in the assemblies of Macedonia;

2 p erché nelle molte tribolazioni con cui sono state provate, la loro gioia incontenibile e la loro estrema povertà hanno sovrabbondato nelle ricchezze della loro generosità.

that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty has abounded to the riches of their liberality.

3 I nfatti io ne rendo testimonianza; hanno dato volentieri secondo i loro mezzi, anzi, oltre i loro mezzi,

For according to power, I bear witness, and beyond power, willing of their own accord,

4 c hiedendoci con molta insistenza il favore di partecipare alla sovvenzione destinata ai santi.

begging of us with much entreaty the grace and fellowship of the service which to the saints.

5 E non soltanto hanno contribuito come noi speravamo, ma prima hanno dato se stessi al Signore e poi a noi, per la volontà di Dio.

And not according as we hoped, but they gave themselves first to the Lord, and to us by God's will.

6 C osì noi abbiamo esortato Tito a completare, anche tra voi, quest’opera di grazia, come l’ha iniziata.

So that we begged Titus that, according as he had before begun, so he would also complete as to you this grace also;

7 M a siccome abbondate in ogni cosa, in fede, in parola, in conoscenza, in ogni zelo e nell’amore che avete per noi, vedete di abbondare anche in quest’opera di grazia.

but even as ye abound in every way, in faith, and word, and knowledge, and all diligence, and in love from you to us, that ye may abound in this grace also.

8 N on lo dico per darvi un ordine, ma per mettere alla prova, con l’esempio dell’altrui premura, anche la sincerità del vostro amore.

I do not speak as commanding, but through the zeal of others, and proving the genuineness of your love.

9 I nfatti voi conoscete la grazia del nostro Signore Gesù Cristo il quale, essendo ricco, si è fatto povero per voi, affinché, mediante la sua povertà, voi poteste diventare ricchi.

For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that for your sakes he, being rich, became poor, in order that ye by his poverty might be enriched.

10 I o do, a questo proposito, un consiglio utile a voi che, dall’anno scorso, avete cominciato per primi non solo ad agire ma anche ad avere il desiderio di fare:

And I give opinion in this, for this is profitable for you who began before, not only to do, but also to be willing, a year ago.

11 f ate ora in modo di portare a termine il vostro agire; come foste pronti nel volere, siate tali anche nel realizzarlo secondo le vostre possibilità.

But now also complete the doing of it; so that as the readiness to be willing, so also to complete out of what ye have.

12 L a buona volontà, quando c’è, è gradita in ragione di quello che uno possiede e non di quello che non ha.

For if the readiness be there, accepted according to what he may have, not according to what he has not.

13 I nfatti non si tratta di mettere voi nel bisogno per dare sollievo agli altri, ma di seguire un principio di uguaglianza;

For not in order that there may be ease for others, and for you distress,

14 n elle attuali circostanze la vostra abbondanza serve a supplire al loro bisogno, perché la loro abbondanza supplisca altresì al vostro bisogno, affinché ci sia uguaglianza, secondo quel che è scritto:

but of equality; in the present time your abundance for their lack, that their abundance may be for your lack, so that there should be equality.

15 « Chi aveva raccolto molto non ne ebbe di troppo, e chi aveva raccolto poco non ne ebbe troppo poco».

According as it is written, He who much had no excess, and he who little was nothing short.

16 R ingraziato sia Dio, che ha messo in cuore a Tito lo stesso zelo per voi;

But thanks to God, who gives the same diligent zeal for you in the heart of Titus.

17 i nfatti Tito non solo ha accettato la nostra esortazione, ma mosso da zelo anche maggiore si è spontaneamente messo in cammino per venire da voi.

For he received indeed the entreaty, but, being full of zeal, he went of his own accord to you;

18 I nsieme a lui abbiamo mandato il fratello il cui servizio nel vangelo è apprezzato in tutte le chiese;

but we have sent with him the brother whose praise in the glad tidings through all the assemblies;

19 n on solo, ma egli è anche stato scelto dalle chiese come nostro compagno di viaggio in quest’opera di grazia, da noi amministrata per la gloria del Signore {stesso} e per dimostrare la prontezza dell’animo nostro.

and not only, but also chosen by the assemblies as our fellow-traveller with this grace, ministered by us to the glory of the Lord himself, and our readiness;

20 E vitiamo così che qualcuno possa biasimarci per quest’abbondante colletta che noi amministriamo;

avoiding this, that any one should blame us in this abundance administered by us;

21 p erché ci preoccupiamo di agire onestamente non solo davanti al Signore, ma anche di fronte agli uomini.

for we provide for things honest, not only before Lord, but also before men.

22 E con loro abbiamo mandato quel nostro fratello del quale spesso e in molte circostanze abbiamo sperimentato lo zelo; egli è ora più zelante che mai per la grande fiducia che ha in voi.

And we have sent with them our brother whom we have often proved to be of diligent zeal in many things, and now more diligently zealous through the great confidence as to you.

23 Q uanto a Tito, egli è mio compagno e collaboratore in mezzo a voi; quanto ai nostri fratelli, essi sono gli inviati delle chiese e gloria di Cristo.

Whether as regards Titus, my companion and fellow-labourer in your behalf; or our brethren, deputed messengers of assemblies, Christ's glory.

24 D ate loro dunque, in presenza delle chiese, la prova del vostro amore e mostrate loro che abbiamo ragione di essere fieri di voi.

Shew therefore to them, before the assemblies, the proof of your love, and of our boasting about you.
