1 D opo queste cose, Gesù se ne andava per la Galilea, non volendo fare altrettanto in Giudea perché i Giudei cercavano di ucciderlo.

And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee, for he would not walk in Judaea, because the Jews sought to kill him.

2 O r la festa dei Giudei, detta delle Capanne, era vicina.

Now the tabernacles, the feast of the Jews, was near.

3 P erciò i suoi fratelli gli dissero: «Parti di qua e va’ in Giudea, affinché anche i tuoi discepoli vedano le opere che tu fai.

His brethren therefore said to him, Remove hence and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou doest;

4 P oiché nessuno agisce in segreto quando cerca di essere riconosciuto pubblicamente. Se tu fai queste cose, manifèstati al mondo».

for no one does anything in secret and himself seeks to be in public. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world:

5 P oiché neppure i suoi fratelli credevano in lui.

for neither did his brethren believe on him.

6 G esù quindi disse loro: «Il mio tempo non è ancora venuto; il vostro tempo, invece, è sempre pronto.

Jesus therefore says to them, My time is not yet come, but your time is always ready.

7 I l mondo non può odiare voi; ma odia me, perché io testimonio di lui che le sue opere sono malvagie.

The world cannot hate you, but me it hates, because I bear witness concerning it that its works are evil.

8 S alite voi alla festa; io non salgo a questa festa, perché il mio tempo non è ancora compiuto».

Ye, go ye up to this feast. I go not up to this feast, for my time is not yet fulfilled.

9 D ette queste cose, rimase in Galilea. Gesù alla festa delle Capanne

Having said these things to them he abode in Galilee.

10 M a quando i suoi fratelli furono saliti alla festa, allora vi salì anche lui; non palesemente, ma come di nascosto.

But when his brethren had gone up, then he himself also went up to the feast, not openly, but as in secret.

11 I Giudei dunque lo cercavano durante la festa e dicevano: «Dov’è quel tale?»

The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

12 V i era tra la folla un gran mormorio riguardo a lui. Alcuni dicevano: «È un uomo per bene!», altri dicevano: «No, anzi, svia la gente!»

And there was much murmuring concerning him among the crowds. Some said, He is good; others said, No; but he deceives the crowd.

13 N essuno però parlava di lui apertamente, per paura dei Giudei.

However, no one spoke openly concerning him on account of fear of the Jews.

14 V erso la metà della festa, Gesù salì al tempio e si mise a insegnare.

But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.

15 P erciò i Giudei si meravigliavano e dicevano: «Come mai conosce le Scritture senza aver fatto studi?»

The Jews therefore wondered, saying, How knows this letters, having never learned?

16 G esù quindi rispose loro: «La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di colui che mi ha mandato.

Jesus therefore answered them and said, My doctrine is not mine, but of him that has sent me.

17 S e uno vuole fare la volontà di lui, conoscerà se questa dottrina è da Dio o se io parlo di mio.

If any one desire to practise his will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is of God, or I speak from myself.

18 C hi parla di suo cerca la propria gloria; ma chi cerca la gloria di colui che l’ha mandato, è veritiero e non vi è ingiustizia in lui.

He that speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he that seeks the glory of him that has sent him, he is true, and unrighteousness is not in him.

19 M osè non vi ha forse dato la legge? Eppure nessuno di voi mette in pratica la legge! Perché cercate di uccidermi?»

Has not Moses given you the law, and no one of you practises the law? Why do ye seek to kill me?

20 L a gente rispose: «Tu hai un demonio! Chi cerca di ucciderti?»

The crowd answered, Thou hast a demon: who seeks to kill thee?

21 G esù rispose loro: «Un’opera sola ho fatto, e tutti ve ne meravigliate.

Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one work, and ye all wonder.

22 M osè vi ha dato la circoncisione (non che venga da Mosè, ma viene dai padri); e voi circoncidete l’uomo in giorno di sabato.

Therefore Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and ye circumcise a man on sabbath.

23 S e un uomo riceve la circoncisione di sabato affinché la legge di Mosè non sia violata, vi adirate voi contro di me perché in giorno di sabato ho guarito un uomo tutto intero?

If a man receives circumcision on sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be violated, are ye angry with me because I have made a man entirely sound on sabbath?

24 N on giudicate secondo l’apparenza, ma giudicate secondo giustizia».

Judge not according to sight, but judge righteous judgment.

25 P erciò alcuni di Gerusalemme dicevano: «Non è questi colui che cercano di uccidere?

Some therefore of those of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?

26 E ppure, ecco, egli parla liberamente e non gli dicono nulla. Che i capi abbiano riconosciuto per davvero che egli è il Cristo?

and behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers then indeed recognised that this is the Christ?

27 E ppure, costui sappiamo di dov’è; ma quando il Cristo verrà, nessuno saprà di dove egli sia».

But this we know whence he is. Now the Christ, when he comes, no one knows whence he is.

28 G esù, dunque, insegnando nel tempio, esclamò: «Voi certamente mi conoscete e sapete di dove sono; però non sono venuto da me, ma colui che mi ha mandato è veritiero, e voi non lo conoscete.

Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me and ye know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye do not know.

29 I o lo conosco, perché vengo da lui, ed è lui che mi ha mandato».

I know him, because I am from him, and he has sent me.

30 C ercavano perciò di arrestarlo, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso, perché l’ora sua non era ancora venuta.

They sought therefore to take him; and no one laid his hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come.

31 M a molti della folla credettero in lui, e dicevano: «Quando il Cristo sarà venuto, farà più segni di quanti ne abbia fatto questi?»

But many of the crowd believed on him, and said, Will the Christ, when he comes, do more signs than those which this has done?

32 I farisei udirono la gente mormorare queste cose di lui; e i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei mandarono delle guardie per arrestarlo.

The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they might take him.

33 P erciò Gesù disse: «Io sono ancora con voi per poco tempo, poi me ne vado a colui che mi ha mandato.

Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while I am with you, and I go to him that has sent me.

34 V oi mi cercherete e non mi troverete; e dove io sarò, voi non potete venire».

Ye shall seek me and shall not find, and where I am ye cannot come.

35 P erciò i Giudei dissero tra di loro: «Dove andrà dunque ché noi non lo troveremo? Andrà forse da quelli che sono dispersi tra i Greci, a insegnare ai Greci?

The Jews therefore said to one another, Where is he about to go that we shall not find him? Is he about to go to the dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

36 C he significano queste sue parole: “Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete” e: “Dove io sarò, voi non potete venire”?» Fiumi d’acqua viva

What word is this which he said, Ye shall seek me and shall not find; and where I am ye cannot come?

37 N ell’ultimo giorno, il giorno più solenne della festa, Gesù stando in piedi esclamò: «Se qualcuno ha sete, venga a me e beva.

In the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried saying, If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink.

38 C hi crede in me, come ha detto la Scrittura, fiumi d’acqua viva sgorgheranno dal suo seno».

He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39 D isse questo dello Spirito, che dovevano ricevere quelli che avevano creduto in lui; lo Spirito, infatti, non era ancora stato dato, perché Gesù non era ancora glorificato. Quel che la gente dice di Gesù

But this he said concerning the Spirit, which they that believed on him were about to receive; for Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

40 U na parte dunque della gente, udite quelle parole, diceva: «Questi è davvero il profeta».

out of the crowd therefore, having heard this word, said, This is truly the prophet.

41 A ltri dicevano: «Questi è il Cristo». Altri, invece, dicevano: «Ma è forse dalla Galilea che viene il Cristo?

Others said, This is the Christ. Others said, Does then the Christ come out of Galilee?

42 L a Scrittura non dice forse che il Cristo viene dalla discendenza di Davide e da Betlemme, il villaggio dove stava Davide? »

Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes of the seed of David, and from the village of Bethlehem, where David was?

43 V i fu dunque dissenso, tra la gente, a causa sua;

There was a division therefore in the crowd on account of him.

44 e alcuni di loro lo volevano arrestare, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso.

But some of them desired to take him, but no one laid hands upon him.

45 L e guardie dunque tornarono dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai farisei, i quali dissero loro: «Perché non lo avete portato?»

The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, Why have ye not brought him?

46 L e guardie risposero: «Mai un uomo ha parlato così! »

The officers answered, Never man spoke thus, as this man.

47 P erciò i farisei replicarono loro: «Siete stati sedotti anche voi?

The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also deceived?

48 H a qualcuno dei capi o dei farisei creduto in lui?

Has any one of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?

49 M a questo popolino, che non conosce la legge, è maledetto!»

But this crowd, which does not know the law, are accursed.

50 N icodemo (uno di loro, quello che prima era andato da lui ) disse loro:

Nicodemus says to them (being one of themselves),

51 « La nostra legge giudica forse un uomo prima che sia stato udito e che si sappia quello che ha fatto?»

Does our law judge a man before it have first heard from himself, and know what he does?

52 E ssi gli risposero: «Sei anche tu di Galilea? Esamina, e vedrai che dalla Galilea non sorge profeta ».

They answered and said to him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search and look, that no prophet arises out of Galilee.

53 [ [E ognuno se ne andò a casa sua.

And every one went to his home.
