1 « Non spargere voci calunniose e non favorire l’empio attestando il falso.

Thou shalt not accept a false report; extend not thy hand to the wicked, to be an unrighteous witness.

2 N on andare dietro alla folla per fare il male e non deporre in giudizio schierandoti dalla parte della maggioranza per pervertire la giustizia.

Thou shalt not follow the multitude for evil; neither shalt thou answer in a cause, to go after the multitude to pervert.

3 C osì pure non favorire il povero nel suo processo.

Neither shalt thou favour a poor man in his cause.

4 S e incontri il bue del tuo nemico o il suo asino smarrito, non mancare di ricondurglielo.

—If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt certainly bring it back to him.

5 S e vedi l’asino di colui che ti odia caduto a terra sotto il carico, guàrdati bene dall’abbandonarlo, ma aiuta il suo padrone a scaricarlo.

If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under its burden, beware of leaving to him: thou shalt certainly loosen with him.

6 N on violare il diritto del povero nel suo processo.

Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of thy poor in his cause.

7 R ifuggi da ogni parola bugiarda; e non far morire l’innocente e il giusto; perché io non assolverò il malvagio.

Thou shalt keep far from the cause of falsehood; and the innocent and righteous slay not; for I will not justify the wicked.

8 N on accettare nessun regalo; perché il regalo acceca quelli che ci vedono, e corrompe le parole dei giusti.

And thou shalt take no bribe; for the bribe blindeth those whose eyes are open, and perverteth the words of the righteous.

9 N on opprimere lo straniero; voi conoscete lo stato d’animo dello straniero, poiché siete stati stranieri nel paese d’Egitto. Feste nazionali; il sabato

And the stranger thou shalt not oppress; for ye know the spirit of the stranger, for ye have been strangers in the land of Egypt.

10 « Per sei anni seminerai la tua terra e ne raccoglierai i frutti;

And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and gather in its produce;

11 m a il settimo anno la lascerai riposare, incolta; i poveri del tuo popolo ne godranno, e le bestie della campagna mangeranno quel che rimarrà. Lo stesso farai della tua vigna e dei tuoi ulivi.

but in the seventh thou shalt let it rest and lie, that the poor of thy people may eat; and what they leave, the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thine olive-tree.

12 P er sei giorni farai il tuo lavoro; ma il settimo giorno ti riposerai, perché il tuo bue e il tuo asino possano riposarsi e il figlio della tua serva e lo straniero possano riprendere fiato.

—Six days thou shalt do thy work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest; that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger may be refreshed.

13 F arete attenzione a tutte le cose che io vi ho dette, e non pronuncerete il nome di dèi stranieri: non lo si oda uscire dalla vostra bocca.

And ye shall be on your guard as to everything that I have said unto you; and shall make no mention of the name of other gods—it shall not be heard in thy mouth.

14 « Tre volte all’anno mi celebrerai una festa.

Thrice in the year thou shalt celebrate a feast to me.

15 O sserverai la festa degli Azzimi. Per sette giorni mangerai pane azzimo, come te l’ho ordinato, al tempo stabilito del mese di Abib, perché in quel mese tu uscisti dal paese d’Egitto. Nessuno si presenterà davanti a me a mani vuote.

Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread, (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I have commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt; and none shall appear in my presence empty;)

16 O sserverai la festa della Mietitura, con le primizie del tuo lavoro, con quello che avrai seminato nei campi e la festa della Raccolta, alla fine dell’anno, quando avrai raccolto dai campi i frutti del tuo lavoro.

and the feast of harvest, the first-fruits of thy labours which thou hast sown in the field, and the feast of in-gathering, at the end of the year, when thou gatherest in thy labours out of the field.

17 T re volte all’anno tutti gli uomini si presenteranno davanti al Signore Dio.

Three times in the year all thy males shall appear in the presence of the Lord Jehovah.

18 N on mi offrirai il sangue della vittima insieme con pane lievitato; il grasso dei sacrifici della mia festa non sarà conservato durante la notte fino al mattino.

Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my feast remain all night until the morning.

19 P orterai alla casa del Signore Dio tuo il meglio delle primizie della terra. Non farai cuocere il capretto nel latte di sua madre. Istruzioni e promesse riguardo la conquista del paese di Canaan

The first of the first-fruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of Jehovah thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in its mother's milk.

20 « Io mando un angelo davanti a te per proteggerti lungo la via, e per introdurti nel luogo che ho preparato.

Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee to the place that I have prepared.

21 D avanti a lui comportati con cautela e ubbidisci alla sua voce. Non ribellarti a lui, perché egli non perdonerà le vostre trasgressioni; poiché il mio nome è in lui.

Be careful in his presence, and hearken unto his voice: do not provoke him, for he will not forgive your transgressions; for my name is in him.

22 M a se ubbidisci fedelmente alla sua voce e fai tutto quello che ti dirò, io sarò il nemico dei tuoi nemici, l’avversario dei tuoi avversari;

But if thou shalt diligently hearken unto his voice, and do all that I shall say, then I will be an enemy to thine enemies, and an adversary to thine adversaries.

23 p oiché il mio angelo andrà davanti a te e ti introdurrà nel paese degli Amorei, degli Ittiti, dei Ferezei, dei Cananei, degli Ivvei e dei Gebusei, e li sterminerò.

For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will cut them off.

24 T u non ti prostrerai davanti ai loro dèi; non servirai loro. Non farai quello che essi fanno; anzi li distruggerai interamente e spezzerai le loro statue.

Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their deeds; but thou shalt utterly destroy them, and utterly shatter their statues.

25 S ervirete il Signore, il vostro Dio, ed egli benedirà il tuo pane e la tua acqua; io allontanerò la malattia di mezzo a te.

And ye shall serve Jehovah your God; and he shall bless thy bread and thy water; and I will take sickness away from thy midst.

26 N el tuo paese non ci sarà donna che abortisca, né donna sterile. Io renderò completo il numero dei tuoi giorni.

There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land; the number of thy days will I fulfil.

27 I o manderò davanti a te il mio terrore, metterò in rotta ogni popolo presso il quale arriverai e farò voltare le spalle davanti a te a tutti i tuoi nemici.

I will send my fear before thee, and confound every people to which thou comest, and will make all thine enemies turn their back to thee.

28 M anderò davanti a te i calabroni, che scacceranno gli Ivvei, i Cananei e gli Ittiti dalla tua presenza.

And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.

29 N on li scaccerò dalla tua presenza in un anno, affinché il paese non diventi un deserto, e le bestie dei campi non si moltiplichino a tuo danno.

I will not drive them out from before thee in one year: lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee.

30 L i scaccerò dalla tua presenza a poco a poco, affinché tu cresca di numero e possa prendere possesso del paese.

By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou art fruitful, and possess the land.

31 F isserò i tuoi confini dal mar Rosso al mare dei Filistei, dal deserto sino al fiume; poiché io vi darò nelle mani gli abitanti del paese; tu li scaccerai dalla tua presenza.

And I will set thy bounds from the Red Sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness unto the river; for I will give the inhabitants of the land into your hand, that thou mayest dispossess them from before thee.

32 N on farai nessun patto con loro, né con i loro dèi.

Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.

33 N on dovranno abitare nel tuo paese, perché non ti inducano a peccare contro di me: tu serviresti i loro dèi e questo sarebbe un laccio per te».

They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me; for if thou serve their gods, it is sure to be a snare unto thee.
