1 N on riprendere con asprezza l’uomo anziano, ma esortalo come un padre; i giovani, come fratelli;

Rebuke not an elder sharply, but exhort as a father, younger as brethren,

2 l e donne anziane, come madri; le giovani, come sorelle, in tutta purezza.

elder women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.

3 O nora le vedove che sono veramente vedove.

Honour widows who are really widows;

4 M a se una vedova ha figli o nipoti, imparino essi per primi a fare il loro dovere verso la propria famiglia e a rendere il contraccambio ai loro genitori, perché questo è gradito davanti a Dio.

but if any widow have children or descendants, let them learn first to be pious as regards their own house, and to render a return on their side to parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God.

5 L a vedova che è veramente tale, e che è rimasta sola, ha posto la sua speranza in Dio e persevera in suppliche e preghiere notte e giorno;

Now she who a widow indeed, and is left alone, has put hope in God, and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.

6 m a quella che si abbandona ai piaceri, benché viva, è morta.

But she that lives in habits of self-indulgence is dead living.

7 A nche queste cose ordina, perché siano irreprensibili.

And these things enjoin, that they may be irreproachable.

8 S e uno non provvede ai suoi, e in primo luogo a quelli di casa sua, ha rinnegato la fede ed è peggiore di un incredulo.

But if any one does not provide for his own, and specially for those of house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than the unbeliever.

9 L a vedova sia iscritta nel catalogo quando abbia non meno di sessant’anni, quando è stata moglie di un solo marito,

Let a widow be put upon the list, being of not less than sixty years, wife of one man,

10 q uando è conosciuta per le sue opere buone: per aver allevato figli, esercitato l’ospitalità, lavato i piedi ai santi, soccorso gli afflitti, concorso a ogni opera buona.

borne witness to in good works, if she have brought up children, if she have exercised hospitality, if she have washed saints' feet, if she have imparted relief to the distressed, if she have diligently followed every good work.

11 M a rifiuta le vedove più giovani perché, quando vengono afferrate dal desiderio, abbandonato Cristo, vogliono risposarsi,

But younger widows decline; for when they grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry,

12 r endendosi colpevoli perché hanno abbandonato l’impegno precedente.

being guilty, because they have cast off their first faith.

13 I noltre imparano anche a essere oziose, andando attorno per le case; e non soltanto a essere oziose, ma anche pettegole e curiose, parlando di cose delle quali non si deve parlare.

And, at the same time, they learn also idle, going about to people's houses; and not only idle, but also gossipers and meddlers, speaking things not becoming.

14 V oglio dunque che le vedove giovani si risposino, abbiano figli, governino la casa, non diano all’avversario alcuna occasione di maldicenza;

I will therefore that the younger marry, bear children, rule the house, give no occasion to the adversary in respect of reproach.

15 i nfatti già alcune si sono sviate per andare dietro a Satana.

For already some have turned aside after Satan.

16 S e qualche credente ha con sé delle vedove, le soccorra. Non ne sia gravata la chiesa, perché possa soccorrere quelle che sono veramente vedove.

If any believing man or woman have widows, let them impart relief to them, and let not the assembly be charged, that it may impart relief to those widows indeed.

17 G li anziani che tengono bene la presidenza siano reputati degni di doppio onore, specialmente quelli che si affaticano nella predicazione e nell’insegnamento;

Let the elders who take the lead well be esteemed worthy of double honour, specially those labouring in word and teaching;

18 i nfatti la Scrittura dice: «Non mettere la museruola al bue che trebbia»; e: «L’operaio è degno del suo salario».

for the scripture says, Thou shalt not muzzle an ox that treadeth out corn, and, The workman worthy of his hire.

19 N on ricevere accuse contro un anziano, se non vi sono due o tre testimoni.

Against an elder receive not an accusation unless where there are two or three witnesses.

20 Q uelli che peccano, riprendili in presenza di tutti, perché anche gli altri abbiano timore.

Those that sin convict before all, that the rest also may have fear.

21 T i scongiuro, davanti a Dio, a Cristo Gesù e agli angeli eletti, di osservare queste cose senza pregiudizi e di non fare nulla con parzialità.

I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, that thou keep these things without prejudice, doing nothing by favour.

22 N on imporre con troppa fretta le mani ad alcuno, e non partecipare ai peccati altrui; consèrvati puro.

Lay hands quickly on no man, nor partake in others' sins. Keep thyself pure.

23 N on continuare a bere acqua soltanto, ma prendi un po’ di vino a causa del tuo stomaco e delle tue frequenti indisposizioni.

Drink no longer only water, but use a little wine on account of thy stomach and thy frequent illnesses.

24 I peccati di alcune persone sono manifesti prima ancora del giudizio; di altre, invece, si conosceranno in seguito.

Of some men the sins are manifest beforehand, going before to judgment, and some also they follow after.

25 C osì pure, anche le opere buone sono manifeste; e quelle che non lo sono, non possono rimanere nascoste.

In like manner good works also are manifest beforehand, and those that are otherwise cannot be hid.
