And it came to pass when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, that the doorkeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed.

And I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the citadel, charge over Jerusalem; for he was a faithful man and feared God above many.

3 E dissi loro: “Le porte di Gerusalemme non si aprano prima che il sole scotti; e mentre le guardie saranno ancora al loro posto, si chiudano e si sbarrino le porte; e si pongano a fare la guardia gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, ciascuno al suo turno e ciascuno davanti alla propria casa”.

And I said to them that the gates of Jerusalem should not be opened until the sun was hot, and that they should shut the doors and bar them while they stood by; and that there should be appointed watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one over against his house.

4 L a città era grande ed estesa; ma dentro c’era poca gente, e non si erano costruite case.

Now the city was large and great; but the people in it were few, and no houses were built.

5 I l mio Dio mi mise in cuore di radunare i notabili, i magistrati e il popolo, per farne il censimento. Trovai il registro genealogico di quelli che erano tornati dall’esilio la prima volta, e vi trovai scritto quanto segue:

And my God put into my heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, for registration by genealogy. And I found a genealogical register of those that had come up at the first, and I found written in it:

6 “ Questi sono quelli della provincia che tornarono dall’esilio, coloro che Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, aveva deportati e che tornarono a Gerusalemme e in Giuda, ciascuno nella sua città.

These are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and who came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one to his city;

These sought their genealogical register, but it was not found; therefore were they, as polluted, removed from the priesthood.

65 e il governatore disse loro di non mangiare offerte sacre finché non si presentasse un sacerdote per consultare Dio per mezzo dell’urim e del tummim.

And the Tirshatha said to them that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up the priest with Urim and Thummim.

66 L a comunità tutta insieme comprendeva quarantaduemilatrecentosessanta persone,

The whole congregation together was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,

And some of the chief fathers gave to the work. The Tirshatha gave to the treasure a thousand darics of gold, fifty basons, five hundred and thirty priests' coats.

71 T ra i capi famiglia ce ne furono che diedero al tesoro dell’opera ventimila dracme d’oro e duemiladuecento mine d’argento.

And of the chief fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand darics of gold, and two thousand two hundred pounds of silver.

72 I l resto del popolo diede ventimila dracme d’oro, duemila mine d’argento e sessantasette vesti sacerdotali.

And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand darics of gold, and two thousand pounds of silver, and sixty-seven priests' coats.

73 I sacerdoti, i Leviti, i portinai, i cantori, la gente del popolo, i Netinei e tutti gli Israeliti si stabilirono nelle loro città. Quando giunse il settimo mese, i figli d’Israele erano stabiliti nelle loro città”».

And the priests, and the Levites, and the doorkeepers, and the singers, and of the people, and the Nethinim, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities. And when the seventh month came, and the children of Israel were in their cities,
