1 V ennero da me alcuni anziani d’Israele e si sedettero davanti a me.

And there came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.

2 L a parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini:

And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

3 « Figlio d’uomo, questi uomini hanno innalzato idoli nel loro cuore e si sono messi davanti all’intoppo che li fa cadere nella loro iniquità; come potrei io essere consultato da costoro?

Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumbling-block of their iniquity before their face: should I be inquired of at all by them?

4 P erciò parla e di’ loro: Così dice il Signore, Dio: “Chiunque della casa d’Israele innalza i suoi idoli nel suo cuore e pone davanti a sé l’intoppo che lo fa cadere nella sua iniquità, e poi viene al profeta, io, il Signore, gli risponderò come si merita per la moltitudine dei suoi idoli,

Therefore speak to them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet, I Jehovah will answer him according to this, according to the multitude of his idols:

5 a llo scopo di toccare il cuore di quelli della casa d’Israele che si sono allontanati da me per i loro idoli”.

that I may take the house of Israel by their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.

6 P erciò di’ alla casa d’Israele: Così parla il Signore, Dio: “Tornate, allontanatevi dai vostri idoli, distogliete le vostre facce da tutte le vostre abominazioni.

Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Return ye, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

7 P oiché, a chiunque della casa d’Israele o degli stranieri che soggiornano in Israele si separa da me, innalza i suoi idoli nel suo cuore e pone davanti a sé l’intoppo che lo fa cadere nella sua iniquità, e poi viene al profeta per consultarmi per suo mezzo, risponderò io, il Signore, proprio io.

For every one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, who separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet to inquire of me by him, I Jehovah will answer him by myself;

8 I o volgerò la mia faccia contro quell’uomo, ne farò un segno e un proverbio, e lo eliminerò dal mezzo del mio popolo; e voi conoscerete che io sono il Signore.

and I will set my face against that man, and will make him desolate, for a sign and for proverbs, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people: and ye shall know that I Jehovah.

9 S e il profeta si lascia sedurre e dice qualche parola, io, il Signore, sono colui che avrò sedotto quel profeta; stenderò la mia mano contro di lui e lo distruggerò in mezzo al mio popolo d’Israele.

And if the prophet be enticed and shall speak a word, I Jehovah have enticed that prophet; and I will stretch out my hand against him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.

10 E ntrambi porteranno la pena della loro iniquità: la pena del profeta sarà pari alla pena di colui che lo consulta,

And they shall bear their iniquity: the iniquity of the prophet shall be even as the iniquity of the inquirer;

11 a ffinché quelli della casa d’Israele non vadano più sviandosi lontano da me e non si contaminino più con tutte le loro trasgressioni; siano invece mio popolo e io sia il loro Dio”, dice il Signore, Dio ». L’esempio dei tre uomini giusti

that the house of Israel may go no more astray from me, neither make themselves any more unclean with all their transgressions; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, saith the Lord Jehovah.

12 L a parola del Signore mi fu ancora rivolta in questi termini:

And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

13 « Figlio d’uomo, se un popolo peccasse contro di me commettendo qualche infedeltà, e io stendessi la mia mano contro di lui, e gli spezzassi l’asse del pane e gli mandassi contro la fame, e ne sterminassi uomini e bestie,

Son of man, when a land sinneth against me by working unfaithfulness, and I stretch out my hand upon it, and break the staff of the bread thereof, and send famine upon it, and cut off man and beast from it;

14 e in mezzo a esso si trovassero questi tre uomini: Noè, Daniele e Giobbe, questi non salverebbero che se stessi, per la loro giustizia», dice il Signore, Dio.

though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, should be in it, they should deliver their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord Jehovah.

15 « Se io facessi passare per quel paese delle bestie feroci che lo spopolassero, al punto da renderlo un deserto dove nessuno passasse più a causa di quelle bestie,

If I cause evil beasts to pass through the land, and they bereave it, and it become a desolation, so that no one passeth through because of the beasts;

16 s e in mezzo ad esso si trovassero quei tre uomini, com’è vero che io vivo», dice il Signore, Dio, «essi non salverebbero né figli né figlie; essi soltanto sarebbero salvati, ma il paese rimarrebbe desolato.

—though these three men should be in it, I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, they should deliver neither sons nor daughters: they only should be delivered, and the land should be a desolation.

17 O se io facessi venire la spada contro quel paese e dicessi: “Passi la spada per il paese!” in modo che ne sterminasse uomini e bestie,

Or I bring the sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land, so that I cut off man and beast from it,

18 s e in mezzo ad esso si trovassero quei tre uomini, com’è vero che io vivo», dice il Signore, Dio, «essi non salverebbero né figli né figlie, ma essi soltanto sarebbero salvati.

and these three men should be in it, I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, they should deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only themselves should be delivered.

19 O se contro quel paese mandassi la peste e riversassi su di esso il mio furore fino al sangue, per sterminare uomini e bestie,

Or I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast,

20 s e in mezzo ad esso si trovassero Noè, Daniele e Giobbe, com’è vero che io vivo», dice il Signore, Dio, «essi non salverebbero né figli né figlie; non salverebbero che se stessi, per la loro giustizia».

and Noah, Daniel, and Job should be in it, I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, they should deliver neither son nor daughter: they should deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

21 I nfatti così parla il Signore, Dio: «Non altrimenti avverrà quando manderò contro Gerusalemme i miei quattro tremendi giudizi: la spada, la fame, le bestie feroci e la peste, per sterminare uomini e bestie.

For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the evil beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast!

22 M a ecco, ne scamperà un residuo, dei figli e delle figlie, che saranno condotti fuori, che giungeranno a voi e di cui vedrete la condotta e le azioni; allora vi consolerete del male che io faccio venire su Gerusalemme, di tutto quello che faccio venire su di lei.

But behold, there shall be left in it those that escape, who shall be brought out of, sons and daughters. Behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings; and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, as to all that I have brought upon it.

23 E ssi vi consoleranno quando vedrete la loro condotta e le loro azioni, e riconoscerete che, non senza ragione, io faccio quello che faccio contro di lei», dice il Signore, Dio.

And they shall comfort you, when ye see their way and their doings; and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord Jehovah.
