1 A llora Zofar di Naama rispose e disse:

And Zophar the Naamathite answered and said,

2 « Per questo i miei pensieri mi spingono a risponderti e, a causa di ciò, c’è questa fretta dentro di me.

Therefore do my thoughts give me an answer, and for this is my haste within me.

3 H o udito rimproveri che mi fanno oltraggio; ma lo spirito mio darà una risposta assennata.

I hear a reproof putting me to shame; and spirit answereth me by mine understanding.

4 N on lo sai tu che in ogni tempo, da che l’uomo è stato posto sulla terra,

Knowest thou this, that of old, since man was placed upon earth,

5 i l trionfo dei malvagi è breve e la gioia degli empi non dura che un istante?

The exultation of the wicked is short, and the joy of the ungodly man but for a moment?

6 A nche se la sua altezza giungesse fino al cielo, il suo capo toccasse le nubi,

Though his height mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds,

7 l ’empio perirà per sempre come lo sterco suo; quelli che lo vedevano diranno: “Dov’è?”

Like his own dung doth he perish for ever; they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?

8 S e ne volerà via come un sogno, non si troverà più; si dileguerà come una visione notturna.

He flieth away as a dream, and is not found; and is chased away as a vision of the night.

9 L ’occhio che lo guardava cesserà di vederlo e la sua casa più non lo scorgerà.

The eye which saw him shall not again; and his place beholdeth him no more.

10 I suoi figli si raccomanderanno ai poveri, le sue mani restituiranno la sua ricchezza.

His children shall seek the favour of the poor, and his hands restore his wealth.

11 I l vigore giovanile che gli riempiva le ossa sarà nella polvere con lui.

His bones were full of his youthful strength; but it shall lie down with him in the dust.

12 I l male è dolce alla sua bocca, se lo nasconde sotto la lingua,

Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth he hide it under his tongue,

13 l o conserva, non lo lascia andare giù, lo trattiene sotto al suo palato;

he spare it, and forsake it not, but keep it within his mouth,

14 m a il cibo gli si trasforma nelle viscere, gli diventa in corpo veleno d’aspide.

His food is turned in his bowels; it is the gall of asps within him.

15 H a trangugiato ricchezze e le vomiterà; Dio stesso gliele ricaccerà dal ventre.

He hath swallowed down riches, but he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.

16 H a succhiato veleno d’aspide, la lingua della vipera lo ucciderà.

He shall suck the poison of asps; the viper's tongue shall kill him.

17 N on godrà più la vista di acque perenni, né di rivi fluenti di miele e di latte.

He shall not see streams, rivers, brooks of honey and butter.

18 R enderà i suoi frutti, e non li mangerà; saranno pari alla ricchezza dei suoi guadagni, e non ne godrà.

That which he laboured for shall he restore, and not swallow down; its restitution shall be according to the value, and he shall not rejoice.

19 P erché ha oppresso e abbandonato il povero, si è impadronito di case che non aveva costruite;

For he hath oppressed, hath forsaken the poor; he hath violently taken away a house that he did not build.

20 p erché la sua ingordigia non conobbe limiti, egli non salverà nulla di ciò che ha tanto desiderato.

Because he knew no rest in his craving, he shall save nought of what he most desired.

21 L a sua voracità non risparmiava nulla, perciò il suo benessere non durerà.

Nothing escaped his greediness; therefore his prosperity shall not endure.

22 N el colmo dell’abbondanza, si troverà in miseria; la mano di chiunque ebbe a soffrire tormenti si alzerà contro di lui.

In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits; every hand of the wretched shall come upon him.

23 Q uando starà per riempirsi il ventre, Dio manderà contro di lui la sua ira ardente; gliela farà piovere addosso per servirgli da cibo.

It shall be that, to fill his belly, he will cast his fierce anger upon him, and will rain it upon him into his flesh.

24 S e scampa alle armi di ferro, lo trafigge l’arco di bronzo.

If he have fled from the iron weapon, the bow of brass shall strike him through.

25 S i strappa la freccia, essa gli esce dal corpo, la punta sfolgorante gli viene fuori dal fiele, lo assalgono i terrori della morte.

He draweth it forth; it cometh out of his body, and the glittering point out of his gall: terrors are upon him.

26 B uio profondo è riservato ai suoi tesori; lo consumerà un fuoco non attizzato dall’uomo, che divorerà quel che resta nella sua tenda.

All darkness is laid up for his treasures: a fire not blown shall devour him; it shall feed upon what is left in his tent.

27 I l cielo rivelerà la sua iniquità, la terra insorgerà contro di lui.

The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him.

28 L e rendite della sua casa se ne andranno, portate via nel giorno dell’ira di Dio.

The increase of his house shall depart, flowing away in the day of his anger.

29 T ale la parte che Dio riserva all’empio, tale l’eredità che Dio gli destina».

This is the portion of the wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed to him by God.
