1 « Chiama pure! C’è forse chi ti risponda? A quale dei santi vorrai tu rivolgerti?

Call, I pray thee! Is there any that answereth thee? and to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?

2 N o, il cruccio non uccide che l’insensato e l’irritazione fa morire lo stolto.

For vexation killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the simple.

3 I o ho visto l’insensato mettere radici, ma ben presto ho dovuto maledire la sua casa.

I myself saw the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

4 I suoi figli vanno privi di soccorso, sono oppressi alla porta della città e non c’è chi li difenda.

His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer:

5 L ’affamato gli divora il raccolto, glielo ruba perfino dalle spine; l’assetato gli trangugia i beni.

Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh even out of the thorns; and the snare gapeth for his substance.

6 I nfatti la sventura non spunta dalla terra, né il dolore germina dal suolo;

For evil cometh not forth from the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

7 m a l’uomo nasce per soffrire, come la favilla per volare in alto.

For man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upwards.

8 « Io però vorrei cercare Dio, a Dio vorrei esporre la mia causa;

But as for me I will seek unto God, and unto God commit my cause;

9 a lui, che fa cose grandi, imperscrutabili, meraviglie innumerevoli;

Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number;

10 c he sparge la pioggia sopra la terra e manda l’acqua sui campi;

Who giveth rain on the face of the earth, and sendeth waters on the face of the fields;

11 c he innalza quelli che erano abbassati e pone in salvo gli afflitti, in luogo elevato;

Setting up on high those that are low; and mourners are exalted to prosperity.

12 c he sventa i disegni degli astuti, sicché le loro mani non giungono a eseguirli;

He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, and their hands carry not out the enterprise.

13 c he prende gli abili nella loro astuzia, sicché il consiglio degli scaltri va in rovina.

He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong:

14 D i giorno essi incorrono nelle tenebre, a mezzogiorno brancolano come di notte.

They meet with darkness in a the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night.

15 M a Dio salva il meschino dalla spada della loro bocca, e il povero dalla mano del potente.

And he saveth the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

16 C osì per il misero c’è speranza, mentre l’iniquità chiude la bocca.

So the poor hath what he hopeth for, and unrighteousness stoppeth her mouth.

17 « Beato l’uomo che Dio corregge! Tu non disprezzare la lezione dell’Onnipotente;

Behold, happy is the man whom +God correcteth; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.

18 p erché egli fa la piaga, ma poi la fascia; egli ferisce, ma le sue mani guariscono.

For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

19 I n sei sciagure egli sarà il tuo liberatore, e in sette il male non ti toccherà.

He will deliver thee in six troubles, and in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

20 I n tempo di carestia ti scamperà dalla morte, in tempo di guerra dai colpi della spada.

In famine he will redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.

21 S arai sottratto al flagello della lingua, non temerai quando verrà il disastro.

Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

22 I n mezzo al disastro e alla fame riderai, non temerai le belve della terra;

At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh, and of the beasts of the earth thou shalt not be afraid.

23 p erché avrai per alleate le pietre del suolo, e gli animali dei campi saranno con te in pace.

For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

24 S aprai al sicuro la tua tenda; e, visitando i tuoi pascoli, vedrai che non ti manca nulla.

And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou wilt survey thy fold, and miss nothing.

25 S aprai che la tua discendenza moltiplica, che i tuoi rampolli crescono come l’erba dei campi.

And thou shalt know that thy seed is numerous, and thine offspring as the herb of the earth.

26 T e ne andrai maturo alla tomba, come i covoni di grano si accumulano a suo tempo.

Thou shalt come to the grave in a ripe age, as a shock of corn is brought in in its season.

27 E cco quel che abbiamo trovato, riflettendo. Così è. Tu ascolta e fanne tesoro».

Behold this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thyself.
