1 A hora, pues, da voces; ¿habrá quien te responda? ¿Y a cuál de los santos ángeles te volverás?

Call, I pray thee! Is there any that answereth thee? and to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?

2 E s cierto que al necio lo mata el enojo, Y al imprudente lo consume la indignación.

For vexation killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the simple.

3 Y o he visto al necio que echaba raíces, Y en la misma hora vi maldita su morada.

I myself saw the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

4 S us hijos estarán lejos de la seguridad; En la puerta serán quebrantados, Y no habrá quien los libre.

His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer:

5 S u mies se la comerán los hambrientos, Y la sacarán de entre los espinos, Y los sedientos se sorberán su hacienda.

Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh even out of the thorns; and the snare gapeth for his substance.

6 P orque la aflicción no sale del polvo, Ni brota de la tierra la molestia;

For evil cometh not forth from the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

7 S ino que, como las chispas se levantan para volar por el aire, Así el hombre engendra su propia aflicción.

For man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upwards.

8 C iertamente yo en tu lugar buscaría a Dios, Y encomendaría a él mi causa;

But as for me I will seek unto God, and unto God commit my cause;

9 E l cual hace prodigios grandes e inescrutables, Y maravillas sinnúmero;

Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number;

10 Q ue derrama la lluvia sobre la faz de la tierra, Y envía las aguas sobre los campos;

Who giveth rain on the face of the earth, and sendeth waters on the face of the fields;

11 Q ue pone a los humildes en altura, Y a los enlutados levanta a prosperidad;

Setting up on high those that are low; and mourners are exalted to prosperity.

12 Q ue frustra los pensamientos de los astutos, Para que sus manejos no prosperen;

He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, and their hands carry not out the enterprise.

13 Q ue prende a los sabios en la astucia de ellos, Y frustra los designios de los perversos.

He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong:

14 E n pleno día tropiezan con tinieblas, Y a mediodía andan a tientas como de noche.

They meet with darkness in a the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night.

15 A sí libra de la lengua afilada al pobre, de la boca de los impíos, Y de la mano violenta;

And he saveth the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

16 P ues da esperanza al desvalido, Y la iniquidad cerrará su boca.

So the poor hath what he hopeth for, and unrighteousness stoppeth her mouth.

17 H e aquí, bienaventurado es el hombre a quien Dios corrige; Por tanto, no menosprecies la corrección del Todopoderoso.

Behold, happy is the man whom +God correcteth; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.

18 P orque él es quien hace la herida, y él la vendará; Él hiere, y sus manos curan.

For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

19 E n seis tribulaciones te librará, Y aun en la séptima no te tocará el mal.

He will deliver thee in six troubles, and in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

20 E n el hambre te salvará de la muerte, Y en la guerra, del poder de la espada.

In famine he will redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.

21 D el azote de la lengua estarás al abrigo; No temerás la destrucción cuando venga.

Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

22 D e la destrucción y del hambre te reirás, Y no temerás a las fieras del campo;

At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh, and of the beasts of the earth thou shalt not be afraid.

23 P ues aun con las piedras del campo tendrás tu pacto, Y las fieras del campo estarán en paz contigo.

For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

24 S abrás que hay paz en tu tienda; Visitarás tu morada, y nada echarás de menos.

And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou wilt survey thy fold, and miss nothing.

25 A simismo verás que tu descendencia es numerosa, Y tu prole como la hierba de la tierra.

And thou shalt know that thy seed is numerous, and thine offspring as the herb of the earth.

26 B ajarás al sepulcro en buena vejez, Como la gavilla de trigo que se recoge en sazón.

Thou shalt come to the grave in a ripe age, as a shock of corn is brought in in its season.

27 H e aquí lo que hemos indagado y es cierto; Escúchalo y aplícatelo para tu provecho.

Behold this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thyself.
