1 “ Llama ahora, ¿habrá quién te responda? ¿Y a cuál de los santos te volverás?

Call, I pray thee! Is there any that answereth thee? and to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?

2 P orque el enojo mata al insensato, Y la ira da muerte al necio.

For vexation killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the simple.

3 Y o he visto al insensato echar raíces, Y al instante maldije su morada.

I myself saw the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

4 S us hijos no tienen seguridad alguna, Aun en la puerta (de la ciudad) son oprimidos, Y no hay quien los libre.

His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer:

5 S u cosecha la devoran los hambrientos, La toman aun de entre los espinos, Y el intrigante ansía su riqueza.

Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh even out of the thorns; and the snare gapeth for his substance.

6 P orque la aflicción no viene del polvo, Ni brota el infortunio de la tierra;

For evil cometh not forth from the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

7 P ues el hombre nace para la aflicción, Como las chispas vuelan hacia arriba.

For man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upwards.

8 P ero en cuanto a mí, yo buscaría a Dios, Y delante de Dios presentaría mi causa;

But as for me I will seek unto God, and unto God commit my cause;

9 E l hace cosas grandes e inescrutables, Maravillas sin número.

Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number;

10 E l da la lluvia sobre la superficie de la tierra, Y envía las aguas sobre los campos.

Who giveth rain on the face of the earth, and sendeth waters on the face of the fields;

11 P ara poner en alto a los humildes, Y levantar a los que lloran a lugar seguro.

Setting up on high those that are low; and mourners are exalted to prosperity.

12 E l frustra las tramas de los astutos, Para que sus manos no tengan éxito.

He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, and their hands carry not out the enterprise.

13 E l prende a los sabios en su propia astucia, Y el consejo de los sagaces pronto lo frustra.

He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong:

14 D e día tropiezan con las tinieblas, Y a mediodía andan a tientas como de noche.

They meet with darkness in a the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night.

15 P ero El salva al pobre de la espada en sus bocas, Y de la mano del poderoso.

And he saveth the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

16 E l desamparado, pues, tiene esperanza, Y la injusticia tiene que cerrar su boca.

So the poor hath what he hopeth for, and unrighteousness stoppeth her mouth.

17 C uán bienaventurado es el hombre a quien Dios reprende; No desprecies, pues, la disciplina del Todopoderoso (Shaddai).

Behold, happy is the man whom +God correcteth; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.

18 P orque El inflige dolor, pero da alivio; El hiere, pero Sus manos también sanan.

For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

19 D e seis aflicciones te librará, Y en la séptima no te tocará el mal.

He will deliver thee in six troubles, and in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

20 E n el hambre, El te salvará de la muerte, Y en la guerra, del poder de la espada.

In famine he will redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.

21 E starás a cubierto del azote de la lengua, Y no temerás la violencia cuando venga.

Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

22 D e la violencia y del hambre te reirás, Y no temerás a las fieras de la tierra.

At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh, and of the beasts of the earth thou shalt not be afraid.

23 P ues con las piedras del campo harás tu alianza, Y las fieras del campo estarán en paz contigo.

For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

24 Y sabrás que tu tienda está segura, Porque visitarás tu morada y no temerás pérdida alguna.

And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou wilt survey thy fold, and miss nothing.

25 T ambién sabrás que tu descendencia será numerosa, Y tus vástagos como la hierba de la tierra.

And thou shalt know that thy seed is numerous, and thine offspring as the herb of the earth.

26 E n pleno vigor llegarás al sepulcro, Como se recogen las gavillas a su tiempo.

Thou shalt come to the grave in a ripe age, as a shock of corn is brought in in its season.

27 E sto lo hemos examinado, y así es; óyelo, y conóce lo para tu bien.”

Behold this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thyself.
