1 D igo, pues: mientras el heredero es menor de edad, en nada es diferente del siervo, aunque sea el dueño (señor) de todo,

Now I say, As long as the heir is a child, he differs nothing from a bondman, though he be lord of all;

2 s ino que está bajo guardianes y tutores hasta la edad señalada por el padre.

but he is under guardians and stewards until the period fixed by the father.

3 A sí también nosotros, mientras éramos niños, estábamos sujetos a servidumbre bajo las cosas elementales del mundo.

So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the principles of the world;

4 P ero cuando vino la plenitud (el cumplimiento) del tiempo, Dios envió a Su Hijo, nacido de mujer, nacido bajo la Ley,

but when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, come of woman, come under law,

5 a fin de que redimiera a los que estaban bajo la Ley, para que recibiéramos la adopción de hijos.

that he might redeem those under law, that we might receive sonship.

6 Y porque ustedes son hijos, Dios ha enviado el Espíritu de Su Hijo a nuestros corazones, clamando: “¡Abba! ¡Padre!”

But because ye are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 P or tanto, ya no eres siervo, sino hijo; y si hijo, también heredero por medio de Dios. No se Vuelvan a la Esclavitud

So thou art no longer bondman, but son; but if son, heir also through God.

8 P ero en aquel tiempo, cuando ustedes no conocían a Dios, eran siervos de los que por naturaleza no son dioses.

But then indeed, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods;

9 P ero ahora que conocen a Dios, o más bien, que son conocidos por Dios, ¿cómo es que se vuelven otra vez a las cosas débiles, inútiles (sin valor) y elementales, a las cuales desean volver a estar esclavizados de nuevo?

but now, knowing God, but rather being known by God, how do ye turn again to the weak and beggarly principles to which ye desire to be again anew in bondage?

10 U stedes observan los días, los meses, las estaciones y los años.

Ye observe days and months and times and years.

11 T emo que quizá he trabajado en vano por ustedes.

I am afraid of you, lest indeed I have laboured in vain as to you.

12 L es ruego, hermanos, háganse como yo, pues yo también me he hecho como ustedes. Ningún agravio me han hecho.

Be as I, for I also as ye, brethren, I beseech you: ye have not at all wronged me.

13 P ero saben que fue por causa de una enfermedad física que les prediqué (anuncié) el evangelio la primera vez.

But ye know that in weakness of the flesh I announced the glad tidings to you at the first;

14 Y lo que para ustedes fue una prueba en mi condición física, que no despreciaron ni rechazaron, sino que me recibieron como un ángel de Dios, como a Cristo Jesús mismo.

and my temptation, which in my flesh, ye did not slight nor reject with contempt; but ye received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus.

15 ¿ Dónde está, pues, aquel sentido de bendición que tuvieron ? Pues testigo soy en favor de ustedes de que de ser posible, se hubieran sacado los ojos y me los hubieran dado.

What then your blessedness? for I bear you witness that, if possible, plucking out your own eyes ye would have given to me.

16 ¿ Me he vuelto, por tanto, enemigo de ustedes al decirles la verdad ?

So I have become your enemy in speaking the truth to you?

17 A lgunos les tienen celo, no con buena intención, sino que quieren excluirlos a fin de que ustedes muestren celo por ellos.

They are not rightly zealous after you, but desire to shut you out, that ye may be zealous after them.

18 E s bueno mostrar celo con buena intención siempre, y no sólo cuando yo estoy presente con ustedes.

But right to be zealous at all times in what is right, and not only when I am present with you—

19 H ijos míos, por quienes de nuevo sufro dolores de parto hasta que Cristo sea formado en ustedes,

my children, of whom I again travail in birth until Christ shall have been formed in you:

20 q uisiera estar presente con ustedes ahora y cambiar mi tono, pues estoy perplejo en cuanto a ustedes. Alegoría de la Libertad en Cristo

and I should wish to be present with you now, and change my voice, for I am perplexed as to you.

21 D íganme, los que desean estar bajo la ley, ¿no oyen a la ley ?

Tell me, ye who are desirous of being under law, do ye not listen to the law?

22 P orque está escrito que Abraham tuvo dos hijos, uno de la sierva y otro de la libre.

For it is written that Abraham had two sons; one of the maid servant, and one of the free woman.

23 P ero el hijo de la sierva nació según la carne, y el hijo de la libre por medio de la promesa.

But he of the maid servant was born according to flesh, and he of the free woman through the promise.

24 E sto contiene una alegoría, pues estas mujeres son dos pactos. Uno procede del Monte Sinaí que engendra hijos para ser esclavos; éste es Agar.

Which things have an allegorical sense; for these are two covenants: one from mount Sinai, gendering to bondage, which is Hagar.

25 A hora bien, Agar es el Monte Sinaí en Arabia, y corresponde a la Jerusalén actual, porque ella está en esclavitud con sus hijos.

For Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now, for she is in bondage with her children;

26 P ero la Jerusalén de arriba es libre; ésta es nuestra madre.

but the Jerusalem above is free, which is our mother.

27 P orque escrito está: “ Regocijate, oh esteril, la que no concibes; prorrumpe y clama, tu que no tienes dolores de parto, porque mas son los hijos de la desolada, que de la que tiene marido.”

For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break out and cry, thou that travailest not; because the children of the desolate are more numerous than of her that has a husband.

28 Y ustedes, hermanos, como Isaac, son hijos de la promesa.

But ye, brethren, after the pattern of Isaac, are children of promise.

29 P ero así como entonces el que nació según la carne persiguió al que nació según el Espíritu, así también sucede ahora.

But as then he that was born according to flesh persecuted him according to Spirit, so also now.

30 P ero, ¿qué dice la Escritura? “ Echa fuera a la sierva y a su hijo, pues el hijo de la sierva no sera heredero con el hijo de la libre.”

But what says the scripture? Cast out the maid servant and her son; for the son of the maid servant shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.

31 A sí que, hermanos, no somos hijos de la sierva, sino de la libre.

So then, brethren, we are not maid servant's children, but of the free woman.
