1 Y hubo gran clamor del pueblo y de sus mujeres contra sus hermanos Judíos.

And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

2 H abía quienes decían: “Nosotros, nuestros hijos y nuestras hijas somos muchos; por tanto, que se nos dé trigo para que comamos y vivamos.”

And there were that said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many, and we must procure corn that we may eat and live.

3 H abía otros que decían: “Nosotros tenemos que empeñar nuestros campos, nuestras viñas y nuestras casas para conseguir grano, a causa del hambre.”

And there were that said, We have had to pledge our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses, that we might procure corn in the dearth.

4 T ambién había otros que decían: “Hemos pedido dinero prestado para el impuesto del rey sobre nuestros campos y nuestras viñas.

And there were that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute upon our fields and vineyards;

5 A hora bien, nuestra carne es como la carne de nuestros hermanos, y nuestros hijos como sus hijos. Sin embargo, estamos obligando a nuestros hijos y a nuestras hijas a que sean esclavos, y algunas de nuestras hijas ya están sometidas a servidumbre, y no podemos hacer nada porque nuestros campos y nuestras viñas pertenecen a otros.”

yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and behold, we must bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage; neither is it in the power of our hand, for other men have our fields and our vineyards.

6 E ntonces me enojé en gran manera cuando oí su clamor y estas palabras.

And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

7 S e rebeló mi corazón dentro de mí, y reprendí a los nobles y a los oficiales y les dije: “Ustedes están cobrando en exceso cada uno a su hermano.” Por tanto congregué contra ellos una gran asamblea.

And I consulted with myself; and I remonstrated with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother! And I set a great assembly against them.

8 Y les dije: “Nosotros, conforme a nuestras posibilidades, hemos redimido a nuestros hermanos Judíos que fueron vendidos a las naciones; y ahora, ¿venderían ustedes aun a sus hermanos para que sean vendidos a nosotros?” Ellos se quedaron callados y no hallaron respuesta que dar.

And I said to them, We, according to our ability, have redeemed our brethren the Jews, who were sold to the nations; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? And they were silent and found no answer.

9 A gregué además: “No está bien lo que hacen. ¿No deben andar en el temor de nuestro Dios a causa del oprobio de las naciones enemigas nuestras?

And I said, The thing that ye do is not good. Ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, so as not to be the reproach of the nations our enemies?

10 T ambién yo y mis hermanos y mis siervos les hemos prestado dinero y grano. Les ruego, pues, que abandonemos esta usura.

I also, my brethren and my servants, we might exact usury of them, money and corn. I pray you, let us leave off this usury.

11 L es ruego que hoy mismo les devuelvan sus campos, sus viñas, sus olivares y sus casas; también la centésima parte del dinero y del grano, del vino nuevo y del aceite que están exigiendo de ellos.”

Restore, I pray you, to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive-gardens, and their houses, also the hundredth of the money, and of the corn, the wine and the oil, that ye have exacted of them.

12 E ntonces ellos dijeron: “ Lo devolveremos y no les exigiremos nada; haremos tal como has dicho.” Así que llamé a los sacerdotes y les hice jurar que harían conforme a esta promesa.

And they said, We will restore, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, as thou hast said. And I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

13 T ambién sacudí los pliegues de mi manto y dije: “Así sacuda Dios de su casa y de sus bienes a todo hombre que no cumpla esta promesa; así sea sacudido y despojado.” Y toda la asamblea dijo: “¡Amén!” Y alabaron al Señor. Entonces el pueblo hizo conforme a esta promesa.

Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house and from his earnings, that performeth not this promise: even thus be he shaken out and emptied! And all the congregation said, Amen! And they praised Jehovah. And the people did according to this promise.

14 A demás, desde el día en que el rey me mandó que fuera gobernador en la tierra de Judá, desde el año veinte hasta el año treinta y dos del rey Artajerjes, doce años, ni yo ni mis hermanos hemos comido del pan del gobernador.

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

15 P ero los gobernadores anteriores que me precedieron gravaban al pueblo y tomaban de ellos cuarenta siclos (456 gramos) de plata además del pan y del vino; también sus sirvientes oprimían al pueblo. Pero yo no hice así, a causa del temor de Dios.

But the former governors that were before me had been chargeable to the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver: even their servants bore rule over the people. But I did not so, because of the fear of God.

16 T ambién yo me dediqué a la obra en esta muralla; y no compramos ningún terreno, y todos mis siervos estaban reunidos allí para la obra.

Yea, also I applied myself to this work of the wall, and we bought no fields; and all my servants were gathered thither for the work.

17 H abía a mi mesa 150 Judíos y oficiales, sin contar los que vinieron a nosotros de las naciones que nos rodeaban.

And there were at my table a hundred and fifty of the Jews and the rulers, besides those that came to us from among the nations that were about us.

18 L o que se preparaba para cada día era un buey y seis ovejas escogidas, también eran preparadas aves para mí; cada diez días se proveía en abundancia toda clase de vino. Y con todo esto, no reclamé el pan del gobernador, porque la servidumbre era pesada sobre este pueblo.

And that which was prepared daily was one ox six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days all sorts of wine in abundance. Yet for all this I demanded not the bread of the governor; for the service was heavy upon this people.

19 A cuérdate de mí, Dios mío, para bien, conforme a todo lo que he hecho por este pueblo.

Remember for me, my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.
