1 L a palabra de Samuel llegaba a todo Israel. Cuando Israel salió para enfrentarse en batalla con los Filisteos, acampó junto a Ebenezer, mientras que los Filisteos habían acampado en Afec.

And what Samuel had said happened to all Israel. And Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Eben-ezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

2 L os Filisteos se pusieron en orden de batalla para enfrentarse a Israel. Entablado el combate, Israel fue derrotado delante de los Filisteos, quienes mataron como a 4, 000 hombres en el campo de batalla.

And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel; and the battle spread, and Israel was routed before the Philistines; and they slew in battle array in the field about four thousand men.

3 C uando el pueblo volvió al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: “¿Por qué nos ha derrotado hoy el Señor delante de los Filisteos ? Tomemos con nosotros, de Silo, el arca del pacto del Señor, para que vaya en medio de nosotros y nos libre del poder de nuestros enemigos.”

And the people came into the camp; and the elders of Israel said, Why has Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? Let us fetch ourselves the ark of the covenant of Jehovah out of Shiloh, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.

4 E l pueblo envió gente a Silo, y trajeron de allí el arca del pacto del Señor de los ejércitos que está sobre los querubines. Los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, estaban allí con el arca del pacto de Dios.

So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of hosts, who sitteth between the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there by the ark of the covenant of God.

5 Y aconteció que cuando el arca del pacto del Señor entró al campamento, todo Israel gritó con voz tan fuerte que la tierra tembló.

And it came to pass when the ark of the covenant of Jehovah came into the camp, that all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth shook.

6 A l oír los Filisteos el ruido del clamor, dijeron: “¿Qué significa el ruido de este gran clamor en el campamento de los Hebreos?” Entonces comprendieron que el arca del Señor había llegado al campamento.

And the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, and said, What is the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of Jehovah had come into the camp.

7 Y los Filisteos tuvieron temor, pues dijeron: “Dios ha venido al campamento.” Y añadieron: “¡Ay de nosotros! Porque nada como esto ha sucedido antes.

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there has not been such a thing heretofore.

8 ¡ Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de estos dioses poderosos? Estos son los dioses que hirieron a los Egipcios en el desierto con toda clase de plagas.

Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.

9 C obren ánimo y sean hombres, oh Filisteos, para que no lleguen a ser esclavos de los Hebreos como ellos han sido esclavos de ustedes. Sean hombres, pues, y peleen.”

Shew yourselves valiant and be men, ye Philistines, that ye may not have to be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been servants to you: be men, and fight.

10 L os Filisteos pelearon, Israel fue derrotado y cada cual huyó a su tienda; la mortandad fue muy grande, pues de Israel cayeron 30, 000 soldados de a pie.

And the Philistines fought, and Israel was routed, and they fled every man to his tent; and there was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

11 E l arca de Dios fue capturada, y murieron Ofni y Finees, los dos hijos de Elí. Muerte de Elí

And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

12 Y un hombre de Benjamín corrió del campo de batalla, y llegó aquel mismo día a Silo, con sus vestidos rotos y polvo sobre su cabeza.

And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the battle, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes rent and with earth upon his head.

13 C uando llegó, Elí estaba sentado en su asiento junto al camino esperando ansiosamente, porque su corazón temblaba por causa del arca de Dios. Así pues, el hombre fue a anunciar lo en la ciudad, y toda la ciudad prorrumpió en gritos.

And when he came, behold, Eli was sitting upon the seat by the way-side watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And the man came to tell it in the city, and all the city cried out.

14 A l oír Elí el ruido de los gritos, dijo: “¿Qué significa el ruido de este tumulto?” Entonces el hombre se acercó apresuradamente y dio la noticia a Elí.

And Eli heard the noise of the crying, and said, What is the noise of this tumult? And the man came hastily, and told Eli.

15 E lí tenía noventa y ocho años, sus ojos se habían cegado y no podía ver.

Now Eli was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were set, that he could not see.

16 E l hombre le dijo a Elí: “Yo soy el que vine del campo de batalla. Hoy escapé del campo de batalla.” “¿Cómo fueron las cosas, hijo mío ?” preguntó Elí.

And the man said to Eli, I am he that came out of the battle, and I have fled to-day out of the battle. And he said, What has taken place, my son?

17 E l que trajo la noticia respondió: “Israel ha huido delante de los Filisteos, además ha habido gran matanza entre el pueblo, también han muerto tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, y el arca de Dios ha sido tomada.”

And the messenger answered and said, Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

18 C uando mencionó el arca de Dios, Elí cayó de su asiento hacia atrás, junto a la puerta, se rompió la nuca y murió, pues era entrado en años y pesaba mucho. Elí había juzgado a Israel durante cuarenta años.

And it came to pass, when he mentioned the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck broke, and he died; for the man was old, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

19 S u nuera, la mujer de Finees, estaba encinta y a punto de dar a luz, y al oír la noticia que el arca de Dios había sido tomada y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se arrodilló y dio a luz, porque le sobrevinieron los dolores de parto.

And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered; and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

20 A l tiempo que moría, las mujeres que estaban junto a ella le dijeron: “No temas, porque has dado a luz un hijo.” Ella no respondió ni prestó atención.

And as she was dying, the women that stood by her said, Fear not; for thou hast borne a son. But she did not answer, neither did she take it to heart.

21 P ero llamó al niño Icabod (Sin gloria) y dijo: “¡Se ha ido la gloria de Israel!” por haber sido tomada el arca de Dios, y por la muerte de su suegro y de su marido.

And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

22 E lla dijo: “Se ha ido la gloria de Israel, porque el arca de Dios ha sido tomada.”

And she said, The glory is departed from Israel, for the ark of God is taken.
