1 O r Israele era stanziato a Sittim e il popolo cominciò a fornicare con le figlie di Moab.

And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab.

2 E sse invitarono il popolo ai sacrifici offerti ai loro dèi; e il popolo mangiò e si prostrò davanti ai loro dèi.

And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.

3 I sraele si unì a Baal-Peor e l’ira del Signore si accese contro Israele.

And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.

4 I l Signore disse a Mosè: «Prendi tutti i capi del popolo e falli impiccare davanti al Signore, alla luce del sole, affinché l’ardente ira del Signore sia allontanata da Israele».

And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel.

5 M osè disse ai giudici d’Israele: «Ciascuno di voi uccida quelli dei suoi uomini che si sono uniti a Baal-Peor».

And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.

6 E cco che uno dei figli d’Israele venne e condusse ai suoi fratelli una donna madianita, sotto gli occhi di Mosè e di tutta la comunità dei figli d’Israele, mentre essi stavano piangendo all’ingresso della tenda di convegno.

And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting.

7 E Fineas, figlio di Eleazar, figlio del sacerdote Aaronne, lo vide, si alzò in mezzo alla comunità e afferrò una lancia;

And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand,

8 p oi andò dietro a quell’Israelita nella sua tenda e li trafisse tutti e due, l’uomo d’Israele e la donna, nel basso ventre. E il flagello cessò tra i figli d’Israele.

and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

9 D i quel flagello morirono ventiquattromila persone.

And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

10 I l Signore parlò a Mosè e disse:

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

11 « Fineas, figlio di Eleazar, figlio del sacerdote Aaronne, ha allontanato la mia ira dai figli d’Israele, perché egli è stato animato del mio zelo in mezzo a loro; e io, nella mia indignazione, non ho sterminato i figli d’Israele.

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

12 P erciò digli che io stabilisco con lui un patto di pace,

Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace!

13 c he sarà per lui e per la sua discendenza dopo di lui: l’alleanza di un sacerdozio perenne, perché egli ha avuto zelo per il suo Dio e ha fatto l’espiazione per i figli d’Israele».

And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

14 O ra l’uomo d’Israele che fu ucciso con la donna madianita si chiamava Zimri, figlio di Salu, capo di una casa patriarcale dei Simeoniti.

And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites.

15 E la donna che fu uccisa, la Madianita, si chiamava Cozbi, figlia di Sur, capo della gente di una casa patriarcale in Madian.

And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was tribal head of a father's house in Midian.

16 P oi il Signore disse a Mosè:

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

17 « Trattate i Madianiti come nemici e uccideteli,

Harass the Midianites, and smite them,

18 p oiché essi vi hanno trattati da nemici con gli inganni mediante i quali vi hanno sedotti nell’affare di Peor e in quello di Cozbi, figlia di un principe di Madian, loro sorella, che fu uccisa il giorno del flagello causato dall’affare di Peor».

for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor.
