1 M entre Israele si trovava a Scittim, il popolo cominciò a darsi alla fornicazione con le figlie di Moab.

And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab.

2 E sse invitarono il popolo ai sacrifici dei loro dèi, e il popolo mangiò e si prostrò davanti ai loro dèi.

And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.

3 C osì Israele si unì a Baal-Peor, e l'ira dell'Eterno si accese contro Israele.

And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.

4 L 'Eterno quindi disse a Mosè: «Prendi tutti i capi del popolo e falli uccidere ed impiccare davanti all'Eterno all'aperto, in pieno sole, affinché l'ardente ira dell'Eterno si allontani da Israele».

And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel.

5 C osì Mosè disse ai giudici d'Israele: «Ciascuno di voi uccida dei suoi uomini coloro che si sono uniti a Baal-Peor».

And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.

6 E d ecco uno dei figli d'Israele venne e presentò ai suoi fratelli una donna madianita, sotto gli occhi di Mosè e di tutta l'assemblea dei figli d'Israele, mentre essi stavano piangendo all'ingresso della tenda di convegno.

And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting.

7 A l vedere questo, Finehas figlio di Eleazar, figlio del sacerdote Aaronne si alzò in mezzo all'assemblea e prese in mano una lancia,

And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand,

8 s eguì quindi l'uomo d'Israele nella sua alcova e li trafisse ambedue, l'uomo d'Israele e la donna, nel basso ventre. Così la calamità tra i figli d'Israele fu arrestata.

and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

9 D i quella calamità morirono ventiquattromila persone.

And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

10 A llora l'Eterno parlò a Mosè dicendo:

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

11 « Finehas figlio di Eleazar, figlio del sacerdote Aaronne, ha rimosso la mia ira dai figli d'Israele, perch'egli è stato animato della stessa mia gelosia in mezzo a loro; così nella mia gelosia non ho sterminato i figli d'Israele.

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

12 P erciò digli: "Ecco, io stabilisco con lui un'alleanza di pace,

Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace!

13 c he sarà per lui e per la sua progenie dopo di lui l'alleanza di un sacerdozio perpetuo, perché ha avuto zelo per il suo DIO e ha fatto l'espiazione per i figli d'Israele"».

And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

14 O r l'uomo d'Israele, che fu ucciso con la donna madianita, si chiamava Zimri, figlio di Salu, capo di una casa patriarcale dei Simeoniti.

And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites.

15 E la donna che fu uccisa, la Madianita, si chiamava Cozbi, figlia di Tsur, capo della gente di una casa patriarcale in Madian.

And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was tribal head of a father's house in Midian.

16 P oi l'Eterno parlò a Mosè dicendo:

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

17 « Molestate i Madianiti e attaccateli,

Harass the Midianites, and smite them,

18 p erché essi vi hanno molestato con i loro artifici mediante i quali vi hanno sedotti nel caso di Peor e nel caso di Cozbi, figlia di un principe di Madian, loro sorella, che fu uccisa il giorno della calamità per il caso di Peor».

for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor.
