1 A llora Bildad di Shuah rispose e disse:

And Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,

2 « Fino a quando parlerai in questo modo, e le parole della tua bocca saranno come un vento impetuoso?

How long wilt thou speak these things? and the words of thy mouth be a strong wind?

3 P uò Dio distorcere il giudizio, e l'Onnipotente sovvertire la giustizia?

Doth God pervert judgment, and the Almighty pervert justice?

4 S e i tuoi figli hanno peccato contro di lui, egli li ha abbandonati in balìa del loro misfatto.

If thy children have sinned against him, he hath also given them over into the hand of their transgression.

5 M a se tu ricerchi Dio e supplichi l'Onnipotente,

If thou seek earnestly unto God, and make thy supplication to the Almighty,

6 s e sei puro e integro, certamente egli sorgerà in tuo favore e ristabilirà la dimora della tua giustizia.

If thou be pure and upright, surely now he will awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous;

7 A nche se la tua condizione passata è stata ben piccola cosa

And though thy beginning was small, yet thine end shall be very great.

8 i l tuo futuro sarà grande. Interroga quindi le generazioni passate e considera le cose scoperte dai loro padri,

For inquire, I pray thee, of the former generation, and attend to the researches of their fathers;

9 n oi infatti siamo di ieri e non sappiamo nulla, perché i nostri giorni sulla terra sono come un'ombra.

For we are of yesterday, and know nothing, for our days upon earth are a shadow.

10 N on ti insegneranno forse essi e non ti parleranno, traendo parole dal loro cuore?

Shall not they teach thee, tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?

11 P uò il papiro crescere fuori della palude, e il giunco svilupparsi senz'acqua?

Doth the papyrus shoot up without mire? doth the reed-grass grow without water?

12 M entre è ancora verde e senza essere tagliato, si secca prima di ogni altra erba.

Whilst it is yet in its greenness not cut down, it withereth before any grass.

13 T ali sono le vie di tutti quelli che dimenticano Dio; cosí la speranza dell'empio perirà.

So are the paths of all that forget God; and the profane man's hope shall perish,

14 L a sua fiducia sarà troncata e la sua sicurezza è come una tela di ragno.

Whose confidence shall be cut off, and his reliance is a spider's web.

15 E gli si appoggia alla sua casa, ma essa non regge; vi si aggrappa, ma essa non tiene.

He shall lean upon his house, and it shall not stand; he shall lay hold on it, but it shall not endure.

16 E gli è tutto verdeggiante al sole e i suoi rami si protendono sul suo giardino;

He is full of sap before the sun, and his sprout shooteth forth over his garden;

17 l e sue radici si intrecciano intorno a un mucchio di pietre, e penetra fra le pietre della casa.

His roots are entwined about the stoneheap; he seeth the place of stones.

18 M a se è strappato dal suo luogo, questo lo rinnega, dicendo: "non ti ho mai visto"!

If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him: I have not seen thee!

19 E cco, questa è la gioia del suo modo di vivere, mentre altri spunteranno dalla polvere.

Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the dust shall others grow.

20 E cco, Dio non rigetta l'uomo integro né presta aiuto ai malfattori.

Behold, God will not cast off a perfect man, neither will he take evil-doers by the hand.

21 E gli renderà ancora il sorriso alla tua bocca, e alle tue labbra canti di gioia.

Whilst he would fill thy mouth with laughing and thy lips with shouting,

22 Q uelli che ti odiano saranno coperti di vergogna, e la tenda degli empi sparirà».

They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame, and the tent of the wicked be no more.
