1 O r i Filistei radunarono le loro truppe per combattere; si radunarono a Sokoh, che appartiene a Giuda, e si accamparono fra Sokoh e Azekah, a Efes-Dammim.

And the Philistines assembled their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Sochoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Sochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

2 A nche Saul e gli uomini d'Israele si radunarono e si accamparono nella valle del Terebinto, e si schierarono in battaglia contro i Filistei.

And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of terebinths, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

3 I Filistei stavano sul monte da una parte e Israele stava sul monte dall'altra parte, e fra di loro c'era la valle.

And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side; and the ravine was between them.

4 D all'accampamento dei Filistei uscì un campione di nome Goliath, di Gath, alto sei cubiti e un palmo.

And there went out a champion from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

5 A veva in testa un elmo di bronzo era vestito di una corazza a maglie, il cui peso era di cinquemila sicli di bronzo;

And he had a helmet of bronze upon his head, and he was clothed with a corselet of scales; and the weight of the corselet was five thousand shekels of bronze.

6 a lle gambe portava gambiere di bronzo e un giavellotto di bronzo sospeso alle spalle.

And he had greaves of bronze upon his legs, and a javelin of bronze between his shoulders.

7 L 'asta della sua lancia era come un subbio di tessitore, e la punta della lancia pesava seicento sicli di ferro, davanti a lui camminava il suo scudiero.

And the shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron; and the shield-bearer went before him.

8 E gli dunque si fermò e gridò alle schiere d'Israele, dicendo: «Perché siete usciti per schierarvi in ordine di battaglia? Non sono io un Filisteo e voi i servi di Saul? Sceglietevi un uomo che scenda contro di me.

And he stood and cried to the ranks of Israel, and said to them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I the Philistine, and ye servants of Saul? choose for yourselves a man, and let him come down to me.

9 S e sarà in grado di combattere con me e di uccidermi, noi saremo vostri servi ma se io sarò vincitore e lo ucciderò, voi sarete nostri servi e ci servirete».

If he be able to fight with me, and to smite me, then will we be your servants; but if I overcome and smite him, then shall ye be our servants and serve us.

10 I l Filisteo poi aggiunse: «Io lancio oggi una sfida alle schiere d'Israele: Datemi un uomo e ci batteremo!».

And the Philistine said, I have defied the ranks of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

11 Q uando Saul e tutto Israele udirono queste parole del Filisteo rimasero costernati ed ebbero grande paura.

And Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, and they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

12 O r Davide era figlio di quell'Efrateo di Betlemme di Giuda, di nome Isai, che aveva otto figli. Al tempo di Saul, quest'uomo era vecchio e avanzato negli anni.

Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem-Judah whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons; and the man was old in the days of Saul, advanced among men.

13 I tre figli maggiori d'Isai erano andati in guerra al seguito di Saul; i nomi dei tre figli che erano andati in guerra erano: Eliab, il primogenito, Abinadab il secondo, e Shammah il terzo

And the three eldest of the sons of Jesse had gone and followed Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and the second to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

14 D avide era il più giovane e i tre maggiori erano andati al seguito di Saul.

And David was the youngest; and the three eldest had followed Saul.

15 D avide invece andava e veniva da Saul per pascolare il gregge di suo padre a Betlemme.

But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

16 I l Filisteo si faceva avanti mattina e sera, e continuò a presentarsi per quaranta giorni.

And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

17 O r Isai disse a Davide, suo figlio: «Prendi per i tuoi fratelli un'efa di questo grano arrostito e questi dieci pani e portali in fretta ai tuoi fratelli nell'accampamento.

And Jesse said to David his son, Take, I pray, for thy brethren, this ephah of parched and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to thy brethren;

18 P orta anche queste dieci forme di formaggio al capitano del loro migliaio vedi come stanno i tuoi fratelli e riportami un pegno da parte loro.

and carry these ten cheeses to the captain of the thousand, and visit thy brethren to see how they are, and take a pledge of them.

19 S aul con i tuoi fratelli e tutti gli uomini d'Israele sono nella valle del Terebinto a combattere contro i Filistei».

Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel in the valley of terebinths, fighting against the Philistines.

20 C osì Davide si alzò al mattino presto lasciò le pecore a un guardiano, prese il suo carico e partì come Isai gli aveva ordinato. Giunse al campo dei carri, quando l'esercito usciva per schierarsi in battaglia e lanciava il grido di guerra.

And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took his charge and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the wagon-defence; and the host which was going forth to the battle-array shouted for the fight.

21 I sraeliti e Filistei si erano schierati in ordine di battaglia, esercito contro esercito.

And Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, rank against rank.

22 D avide, lasciato il suo carico nelle mani del guardiano dei bagagli, corse alle schiere di battaglia; giunto, chiese ai suoi fratelli come stavano.

And David left the things he was carrying in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran into the ranks, and came and saluted his brethren.

23 M entre parlava con loro, ecco uscire dalle schiere dei Filistei quel campione, il Filisteo di Gath, di nome Goliath, e ripetere le solite parole; e Davide le udì.

And as he talked with them, behold there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words; and David heard.

24 T utti gli uomini d'Israele, alla vista di quell'uomo, fuggirono da lui ed ebbero grande paura.

And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were greatly afraid.

25 G li uomini d'Israele dicevano: «Avete visto quell'uomo che avanza? Egli avanza per sfidare Israele. Chiunque lo ucciderà, il re lo ricolmerà di grandi ricchezze, gli darà sua figlia ed esenterà da ogni tributo la casa di suo padre in Israele».

And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that comes up? for to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who smites him, him will the king enrich with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

26 A llora Davide, rivolgendosi agli uomini che stavano vicino a lui, disse: «Che si farà all'uomo che ucciderà questo Filisteo e allontanerà la vergogna da Israele? Ma chi è mai questo Filisteo incirconciso, che osa insultare le schiere del DIO vivente?».

And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that smites this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

27 L a gente gli rispose con le stesse parole, dicendo: «Così sarà fatto a colui che lo ucciderà».

And the people told him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that smites him.

28 E liab, suo fratello maggiore lo sentì mentre parlava con quegli uomini, così Eliab si accese d'ira contro Davide e disse: «Perché sei sceso qui? A chi hai lasciato quelle poche pecore nel deserto? Io conosco il tuo orgoglio e la malignità del tuo cuore: sei sceso qui per vedere la battaglia?».

And Eliab, his eldest brother, heard while he spoke to the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why art thou come down? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride and the naughtiness of thy heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.

29 D avide rispose: «Che ho io fatto ora? Non era che una semplice domanda!».

And David said, What have I now done? Was it not laid upon me?

30 A llontanandosi da lui, si rivolse a un altro e fece la stessa domanda; e la gente gli diede la stessa risposta di prima.

And he turned from him to another, and spoke after the same manner; and the people answered him again after the former manner.

31 C ome udirono le parole che Davide aveva detto, le riportarono a Saul, che lo mandò a chiamare.

And the words were heard which David spoke, and they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.

32 D avide disse a Saul: «Nessuno si perda d'animo a motivo di costui! Il tuo servo andrà a combattere con questo Filisteo».

And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him: thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

33 S aul disse a Davide: «Tu non puoi andare contro questo Filisteo per batterti con lui, perché tu non sei che un ragazzo, mentre lui è un guerriero fin dalla sua giovinezza».

And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

34 M a Davide rispose a Saul: «Il tuo servo pascolava il gregge di suo padre quando un leone o un orso veniva a portar via una pecora dal gregge,

And David said to Saul, Thy servant fed his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and also a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock.

35 i o lo inseguivo, lo colpivo e la strappavo dalle sue fauci; se poi quello si rivoltava contro di me, io l'afferravo per la criniera, lo colpivo e l'ammazzavo

And I went after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth; and when he arose against me, I seized him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36 S i, il tuo servo ha ucciso il leone e l'orso; e questo incirconciso Filisteo sarà come uno di loro, perché ha insultato le schiere del DIO vivente».

Thy servant smote both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.

37 D avide soggiunse: «L'Eterno che mi libera dalla zampa del leone e dalla zampa dell'orso, mi libererà anche dalla mano di questo Filisteo». Allora Saul disse a Davide: «Va' e l'Eterno sia con te»

And David said, Jehovah who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David, Go, and Jehovah be with thee.

38 P oi Saul rivestì Davide della sua armatura, gli mise in capo un elmo di bronzo e gli fece indossare la corazza.

And Saul clothed David with his dress, and put a helmet of bronze upon his head, and clothed him with a corselet.

39 D avide quindi cinse la spada di Saul sopra l'armatura e cercò di camminare, perché non vi era abituato. Ma Davide disse a Saul: «Io non posso camminare con questa armatura perché non ci sono abituato». Così Davide se la tolse di dosso.

And David girded his sword upon his dress, and endeavoured to go; for he had not yet tried. And David said to Saul, I cannot go in these; for I have never tried. And David put them off him.

40 P oi prese in mano il suo bastone, si scelse nel torrente cinque pietre lisce, le pose nella sacca da pastore, in un sacchetto che aveva; poi, con la sua fionda in mano, mosse contro il Filisteo.

And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd's bag that he had, into the pocket; and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.

41 A nche il Filisteo avanzò avvicinandosi sempre più a Davide, mentre il suo scudiero lo precedeva.

And the Philistine came on and approached David; and the man that bore the shield was before him.

42 I l Filisteo guardava attentamente e, scorto Davide, lo disprezzò, perché era soltanto un giovane, rossiccio e di bell'aspetto.

And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was a youth, and ruddy, and besides of a beautiful countenance.

43 I l Filisteo disse a Davide: «Sono io forse un cane, che tu vieni contro di me con dei bastoni?». E il Filisteo maledisse Davide in nome dei suoi dei.

And the Philistine said to David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

44 P oi il Filisteo disse a Davide: «Vieni qui, e io darò la tua carne agli uccelli del cielo e alle bestie dei campi».

And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh to the fowls of the heavens and to the beasts of the field.

45 A llora Davide rispose al Filisteo: «Tu vieni a me con la spada, con la lancia e col giavellotto; ma io vengo a te nel nome dell'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO delle schiere d'Israele che tu hai insultato.

And David said to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with sword, and with spear, and with javelin; but I come to thee in the name of Jehovah of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

46 O ggi stesso l'Eterno ti consegnerà nelle mie mani; e io ti abbatterò, ti taglierò la testa e darò oggi stesso i cadaveri dell'esercito dei Filistei agli uccelli del cielo e alle fiere della terra, affinché tutta la terra sappia che c'è un Dio in Israele.

This day will Jehovah deliver thee up into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thy head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the camp of the Philistines this day to the fowl of the heavens and to the wild beasts of the earth. And all the earth shall know that Israel has a God;

47 A llora tutta questa moltitudine saprà che l'Eterno non salva per mezzo di spada né per mezzo di lancia; poiché l'esito della battaglia dipende dall'Eterno, ed egli vi darà nelle nostre mani».

and all this congregation shall know that Jehovah saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is Jehovah's, and he will give you into our hands.

48 Q uando il Filisteo si mosse e si fece avanti per andare incontro a Davide anche Davide corse prontamente verso la linea di battaglia incontro al Filisteo;

And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and advanced to meet David, that David hasted, and ran towards the ranks to meet the Philistine.

49 m ise la mano nella sacca, ne trasse fuori una pietra, la lanciò con la fionda e colpì il Filisteo in fronte; la pietra si conficcò nella fronte ed egli cadde con la faccia a terra.

And David put his hand into the bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead; and he fell on his face to the earth.

50 C osì Davide con una fionda e con una pietra vinse il Filisteo; e lo colpì e l'uccise benché Davide non avesse alcuna spada in mano.

So David overcame the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and smote the Philistine and killed him; and there was no sword in the hand of David.

51 P oi Davide corse, si gettò sul Filisteo, prese la sua spada, la sguainò e lo uccise troncandogli con essa la testa. Quando i Filistei videro che il loro eroe era morto, si diedero alla fuga.

And David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him completely, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they fled.

52 A llora gli uomini d'Israele e di Giuda si levarono, alzando grida di guerra, e inseguirono i Filistei fino all'ingresso della valle e alle porte di Ekron. I Filistei feriti a morte caddero sulla via di Shaaraim, fino a Gath e a Ekron.

And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou comest to the ravine and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down on the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron.

53 Q uando i figli d'Israele ritonarono dall'inseguimento dei Filistei, saccheggiarono il loro accampamento.

And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they pillaged their camps.

54 P oi Davide prese la testa del Filisteo e la portò a Gerusalemme, ma le sue armi le ripose nella sua tenda.

And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

55 Q uando Saul aveva visto Davide uscire contro il Filisteo, aveva chiesto ad Abner, capo dell'esercito: «Abner di chi è figlio questo giovane?». Abner rispose: «Com'è vero che tu vivi, o re, non lo so».

And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this young man? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

56 A llora il re disse: «Informati di chi sia figlio questo ragazzo».

And the king said, Inquire thou whose son this youth is.

57 Q uando Davide ritornò dall'uccisione del Filisteo, Abner lo prese e lo condusse davanti a Saul, mentre egli aveva ancora in mano la testa del Filisteo.

And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

58 S aul gli disse: «Giovane, di chi sei figlio?». Davide rispose: «Sono figlio del tuo servo, Isai il Betlemita».

And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, young man? And David said, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite.
