1 P aolo e Timoteo, servi di Cristo Gesù, a tutti i santi in Cristo Gesù che sono in Filippi, con i vescovi e con i diaconi:

Paul and Timotheus, bondmen of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with overseers and ministers;

2 g razia a voi e pace da Dio nostro Padre e dal Signore Gesù Cristo. Affetto di Paolo per i Filippesi

grace to you, and peace from God our Father and Lord Jesus Christ.

3 I o ringrazio il mio Dio di tutto il ricordo che ho di voi;

I thank my God for my whole remembrance of you,

4 e sempre, in ogni mia preghiera per tutti voi, prego con gioia

constantly in my every supplication, making the supplication for you all with joy,

5 a motivo della vostra partecipazione al vangelo, dal primo giorno fino ad ora.

because of your fellowship with the gospel, from the first day until now;

6 E ho questa fiducia: che colui che ha cominciato in voi un’opera buona la condurrà a compimento fino al giorno di Cristo Gesù.

having confidence of this very thing, that he who has begun in you a good work will complete it unto Jesus Christ's day:

7 E d è giusto che io senta così di tutti voi, perché io vi ho nel cuore, voi tutti che, tanto nelle mie catene quanto nella difesa e nella conferma del vangelo, siete partecipi con me della grazia.

as it is righteous for me to think this as to you all, because ye have me in your hearts, and that both in my bonds and in the defence and confirmation of the glad tidings ye are all participators in my grace.

8 I nfatti Dio mi è testimone come io vi ami tutti con affetto profondo in Cristo Gesù.

For God is my witness how I long after you all in bowels of Christ Jesus.

9 E prego che il vostro amore abbondi sempre più in conoscenza e in ogni discernimento,

And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in full knowledge and all intelligence,

10 p erché possiate apprezzare le cose migliori, affinché siate limpidi e irreprensibili per il giorno di Cristo,

that ye may judge of and approve the things that are more excellent, in order that ye may be pure and without offence for Christ's day,

11 r icolmi di frutti di giustizia che si hanno per mezzo di Gesù Cristo, a gloria e lode di Dio. La prigionia di Paolo contribuisce alla causa del vangelo

being complete as regards the fruit of righteousness, which by Jesus Christ, to God's glory and praise.

12 D esidero che voi sappiate, fratelli, che quanto mi è accaduto ha piuttosto contribuito al progresso del vangelo;

But I would have you know, brethren, that the circumstances in which I am have turned out rather to the furtherance of the glad tidings,

13 a l punto che a tutti quelli del pretorio e a tutti gli altri è divenuto noto che sono in catene per Cristo;

so that my bonds have become manifest in Christ in all the praetorium and to all others;

14 e la maggioranza dei fratelli nel Signore, incoraggiati dalle mie catene, hanno avuto più ardire nell’annunciare senza paura la parola di Dio.

and that the most of the brethren, trusting in Lord through my bonds, dare more abundantly to speak the word of God fearlessly.

15 V ero è che alcuni predicano Cristo anche per invidia e per rivalità; ma ce ne sono anche altri che lo predicano di buon animo.

Some indeed also for envy and strife, but some also for good will, preach the Christ.

16 Q uesti lo fanno per amore, sapendo che sono incaricato della difesa del vangelo;

These indeed out of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the glad tidings;

17 m a quelli annunciano Cristo con spirito di rivalità, non sinceramente, pensando di provocarmi qualche afflizione nelle mie catene.

but those out of contention, announce the Christ, not purely, supposing to arouse tribulation for my bonds.

18 C he importa? Comunque sia, con ipocrisia o con sincerità, Cristo è annunciato; di questo mi rallegro, e mi rallegrerò ancora;

What is it then? at any rate, in every way, whether in pretext or in truth, Christ is announced; and in this I rejoice, yea, also I will rejoice;

19 s o infatti che ciò tornerà a mia salvezza, mediante le vostre suppliche e l’assistenza dello Spirito di Gesù Cristo,

for I know that this shall turn out for me to salvation, through your supplication and supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ;

20 s econdo la mia viva attesa e la mia speranza di non aver da vergognarmi di nulla; ma che con ogni franchezza, ora come sempre, Cristo sarà glorificato nel mio corpo, sia con la vita, sia con la morte.

according to my earnest expectation and hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but in all boldness, as always, now also Christ shall be magnified in my body whether by life or by death.

21 I nfatti per me il vivere è Cristo e il morire guadagno.

For for me to live Christ, and to die gain;

22 M a se il vivere nella carne porta frutto all’opera mia, non saprei che cosa preferire.

but if to live in flesh, this is for me worth the while: and what I shall choose I cannot tell.

23 S ono stretto da due lati: da una parte ho il desiderio di partire e di essere con Cristo, perché è molto meglio;

But I am pressed by both, having the desire for departure and being with Christ, very much better,

24 m a, dall’altra, il mio rimanere nel corpo è più necessario per voi.

but remaining in the flesh more necessary for your sakes;

25 H o questa ferma fiducia: che rimarrò e starò con tutti voi per il vostro progresso e per la vostra gioia nella fede,

and having confidence of this, I know that I shall remain and abide along with you all, for your progress and joy in faith;

26 a ffinché, a motivo del mio ritorno in mezzo a voi, abbondi il vostro vanto in Cristo Gesù. Esortazione alla perseveranza

that your boasting may abound in Christ Jesus through me by my presence again with you.

27 S oltanto, comportatevi in modo degno del vangelo di Cristo, affinché, sia che io venga a vedervi sia che io resti lontano, senta dire di voi che state fermi in uno stesso spirito, combattendo insieme con un medesimo animo per la fede del vangelo,

Only conduct yourselves worthily of the glad tidings of the Christ, in order that whether coming and seeing you, or absent, I may hear of what concerns you, that ye stand firm in one spirit, with one soul, labouring together in the same conflict with the faith of the glad tidings;

28 p er nulla spaventati dagli avversari. Questo per loro è una prova evidente di perdizione, ma per voi di salvezza; e ciò da parte di Dio.

and not frightened in anything by the opposers, which is to them a demonstration of destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God;

29 P erché vi è stata concessa la grazia, rispetto a Cristo, non soltanto di credere in lui, ma anche di soffrire per lui,

because to you has been given, as regards Christ, not only the believing on him but the suffering for him also,

30 s ostenendo voi pure la stessa lotta che mi avete veduto sostenere e nella quale ora sentite dire che io mi trovo.

having the same conflict which ye have seen in me, and now hear of in me.
