1 N el principio era la Parola, la Parola era con Dio, e la Parola era Dio.

In beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 E ssa era nel principio con Dio.

He was in the beginning with God.

3 O gni cosa è stata fatta per mezzo di lei, e senza di lei neppure una delle cose fatte è stata fatta.

All things received being through him, and without him not one received being which has received being.

4 I n lei era la vita, e la vita era la luce degli uomini.

In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

5 L a luce splende nelle tenebre, e le tenebre non l’hanno sopraffatta.

And the light appears in darkness, and the darkness apprehended it not.

6 V i fu un uomo mandato da Dio, il cui nome era Giovanni;

There was a man sent from God, his name John.

7 e gli venne come testimone per rendere testimonianza alla luce, affinché tutti credessero per mezzo di lui.

He came for witness, that he might witness concerning the light, that all might believe through him.

8 E gli stesso non era la luce, ma venne per rendere testimonianza alla luce.

He was not the light, but that he might witness concerning the light.

9 L a vera luce che illumina ogni uomo stava venendo nel mondo.

The true light was that which, coming into the world, lightens every man.

10 E gli era nel mondo, e il mondo fu fatto per mezzo di lui, ma il mondo non l’ha conosciuto.

He was in the world, and the world had being through him, and the world knew him not.

11 È venuto in casa sua, e i suoi non l’hanno ricevuto;

He came to his own, and his own received him not;

12 m a a tutti quelli che l’hanno ricevuto egli ha dato il diritto di diventare figli di Dio, a quelli cioè che credono nel suo nome,

but as many as received him, to them gave he right to be children of God, to those that believe on his name;

13 i quali non sono nati da sangue, né da volontà di carne, né da volontà d’uomo, ma sono nati da Dio.

who have been born, not of blood, nor of flesh's will, nor of man's will, but of God.

14 E la Parola è diventata carne e ha abitato per un tempo fra di noi, piena di grazia e di verità; e noi abbiamo contemplato la sua gloria, gloria come di unigenito dal Padre.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we have contemplated his glory, a glory as of an only-begotten with a father), full of grace and truth;

15 G iovanni gli ha reso testimonianza, esclamando: «Era di lui che io dicevo: “Colui che viene dopo di me mi ha preceduto, perché era prima di me.

(John bears witness of him, and he has cried, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that comes after me is preferred before me, for he was before me;)

16 I nfatti dalla sua pienezza noi tutti abbiamo ricevuto grazia su grazia”».

for of his fulness we all have received, and grace upon grace.

17 P oiché la legge è stata data per mezzo di Mosè; la grazia e la verità sono venute per mezzo di Gesù Cristo.

For the law was given by Moses: grace and truth subsists through Jesus Christ.

18 N essuno ha mai visto Dio; l’unigenito Dio, che è nel seno del Padre, è quello che l’ha fatto conoscere. Testimonianza di Giovanni il battista

No one has seen God at any time; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared.

19 Q uesta è la testimonianza di Giovanni, quando i Giudei mandarono da Gerusalemme dei sacerdoti e dei Leviti per domandargli: «Tu chi sei?»

And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites that they might ask him, Thou, who art thou?

20 E gli confessò e non negò; confessò dicendo: «Io non sono il Cristo».

And he acknowledged and denied not, and acknowledged, I am not the Christ.

21 E ssi gli domandarono: «Chi sei dunque? Sei Elia?» Egli rispose: «Non lo sono». «Sei tu il profeta?» Egli rispose: «No».

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he says, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.

22 E ssi dunque gli dissero: «Chi sei? affinché diamo una risposta a quelli che ci hanno mandati. Che dici di te stesso?»

They said therefore to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

23 E gli disse: «Io sono la voce di uno che grida nel deserto: “Raddrizzate la via del Signore”, come ha detto il profeta Isaia».

He said, I voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the path of Lord, as said Esaias the prophet.

24 E ssi erano stati mandati da parte dei farisei.

And they were sent from among the Pharisees.

25 L o interrogarono e gli dissero: «Perché dunque battezzi, se tu non sei il Cristo, né Elia, né il profeta?»

And they asked him and said to him, Why baptisest thou then, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?

26 G iovanni rispose loro, dicendo: «Io battezzo in acqua; in mezzo a voi è presente uno che voi non conoscete,

John answered them saying, I baptise with water. In the midst of you stands, whom ye do not know,

27 c olui che viene dopo di me, al quale io non sono degno di sciogliere il legaccio dei calzari!»

he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to unloose.

28 Q ueste cose avvennero in Betania di là dal Giordano, dove Giovanni stava battezzando.

These things took place in Bethany, across the Jordan, where John was baptising.

29 I l giorno seguente vide Gesù che veniva verso di lui e disse: «Ecco l’Agnello di Dio, che toglie il peccato del mondo!

On the morrow he sees Jesus coming to him, and says, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

30 Q uesti è colui del quale dicevo: “Dopo di me viene un uomo che mi ha preceduto, perché egli era prima di me”.

He it is of whom I said, A man comes after me who takes a place before me, because he was before me;

31 I o non lo conoscevo; ma appunto perché egli sia manifestato a Israele, io sono venuto a battezzare in acqua».

and I knew him not; but that he might be manifested to Israel, therefore have I come baptising with water.

32 G iovanni rese testimonianza, dicendo: «Ho visto lo Spirito scendere dal cielo come una colomba e fermarsi su di lui.

And John bore witness, saying, I beheld the Spirit descending as a dove from heaven, and it abode upon him.

33 I o non lo conoscevo, ma colui che mi ha mandato a battezzare in acqua mi ha detto: “Colui sul quale vedrai lo Spirito scendere e fermarsi, è quello che battezza con lo Spirito Santo”.

And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptise with water, he said to me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, he it is who baptises with Holy Spirit.

34 E io ho veduto e ho attestato che questi è il Figlio di Dio».

And I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God.

35 I l giorno seguente Giovanni era di nuovo là con due dei suoi discepoli;

Again, on the morrow, there stood John and two of his disciples.

36 e fissando lo sguardo su Gesù, che passava, disse: «Ecco l’Agnello di Dio!»

And, looking at Jesus as he walked, he says, Behold the Lamb of God.

37 I suoi due discepoli, avendolo udito parlare, seguirono Gesù.

And the two disciples heard him speaking, and followed Jesus.

38 G esù, voltatosi, e osservando che lo seguivano, domandò loro: «Che cercate?» Ed essi gli dissero: «Rabbì (che tradotto vuol dire “Maestro”), dove abiti?»

But Jesus having turned, and seeing them following, says to them, What seek ye? And they said to him, Rabbi (which, being interpreted, signifies Teacher), where abidest thou?

39 E gli rispose loro: «Venite e vedrete ». Essi dunque andarono, videro dove abitava e stettero con lui quel giorno. Era circa la decima ora. I primi discepoli

He says to them, Come and see. They went therefore, and saw where he abode; and they abode with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.

40 A ndrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, era uno dei due che avevano udito Giovanni e avevano seguito Gesù.

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard from John and followed him.

41 E gli per primo trovò suo fratello Simone e gli disse: «Abbiamo trovato il Messia » (che tradotto vuol dire «Cristo »);

He first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, We have found the Messias (which being interpreted is Christ).

42 e lo condusse da Gesù. Gesù lo guardò e disse: «Tu sei Simone, il figlio di Giovanni; tu sarai chiamato Cefa» (che si traduce «Pietro»).

And he led him to Jesus. Jesus looking at him said, Thou art Simon, the son of Jonas; thou shalt be called Cephas (which interpreted is stone).

43 I l giorno seguente, Gesù volle partire per la Galilea; trovò Filippo e gli disse: «Seguimi».

On the morrow he would go forth into Galilee, and Jesus finds Philip, and says to him, Follow me.

44 F ilippo era di Betsàida, della città di Andrea e di Pietro.

And Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 F ilippo trovò Natanaele e gli disse: «Abbiamo trovato colui del quale hanno scritto Mosè nella legge e i profeti: Gesù da Nazaret, figlio di Giuseppe».

Philip finds Nathanael, and says to him, We have found him of whom Moses wrote in the law, and the prophets, Jesus, the son of Joseph, who is from Nazareth.

46 N atanaele gli disse: «Può forse venire qualcosa di buono da Nazaret?» Filippo gli rispose: «Vieni a vedere».

And Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip says to him, Come and see.

47 G esù vide Natanaele che gli veniva incontro e disse di lui: «Ecco un vero Israelita in cui non c’è falsità».

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and says of him, Behold truly an Israelite, in whom there is no guile.

48 N atanaele gli chiese: «Da che cosa mi conosci?» Gesù gli rispose: «Prima che Filippo ti chiamasse, quando eri sotto il fico, io ti ho visto».

Nathanael says to him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig-tree, I saw thee.

49 N atanaele gli rispose: «Rabbì, tu sei il Figlio di Dio, tu sei il re d’Israele».

Nathanael answered and said to him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the King of Israel.

50 G esù rispose e gli disse: «Perché ti ho detto che ti avevo visto sotto il fico, tu credi? Tu vedrai cose maggiori di queste».

Jesus answered and said to him, Because I said to thee, I saw thee under the fig-tree, believest thou? Thou shalt see greater things than these.

51 P oi gli disse: «In verità, in verità vi dico che vedrete il cielo aperto e gli angeli di Dio salire e scendere sul Figlio dell’uomo».

And he says to him, Verily, verily, I say to you, Henceforth ye shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of man.
