1 S e parlassi le lingue degli uomini e degli angeli, ma non avessi amore, sarei un rame risonante o uno squillante cembalo.

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

2 S e avessi il dono di profezia e conoscessi tutti i misteri e tutta la scienza e avessi tutta la fede in modo da spostare i monti, ma non avessi amore, non sarei nulla.

And if I have prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

3 S e distribuissi tutti i miei beni per nutrire i poveri, se dessi il mio corpo a essere arso, e non avessi amore, non mi gioverebbe a niente.

And if I shall dole out all my goods in food, and if I deliver up my body that I may be burned, but have not love, I profit nothing.

4 L ’amore è paziente, è benevolo; l’amore non invidia; {l’amore} non si vanta, non si gonfia,

Love has long patience, is kind; love is not emulous; love is not insolent and rash, is not puffed up,

5 n on si comporta in modo sconveniente, non cerca il proprio interesse, non s’inasprisce, non addebita il male,

does not behave in an unseemly manner, does not seek what is its own, is not quickly provoked, does not impute evil,

6 n on gode dell’ingiustizia, ma gioisce con la verità;

does not rejoice at iniquity but rejoices with the truth,

7 s offre ogni cosa, crede ogni cosa, spera ogni cosa, sopporta ogni cosa.

bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 L ’amore non verrà mai meno. Le profezie verranno abolite; le lingue cesseranno e la conoscenza verrà abolita,

Love never fails; but whether prophecies, they shall be done away; or tongues, they shall cease; or knowledge, it shall be done away.

9 p oiché noi conosciamo in parte, e in parte profetizziamo;

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part:

10 m a quando la perfezione sarà venuta, quello che è solo in parte sarà abolito.

but when that which is perfect has come, that which is in part shall be done away.

11 Q uando ero bambino, parlavo da bambino, pensavo da bambino, ragionavo da bambino; ma quando sono diventato uomo, ho smesso le cose da bambino.

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I reasoned as a child; when I became a man, I had done with what belonged to the child.

12 P oiché ora vediamo come in uno specchio, in modo oscuro; ma allora vedremo faccia a faccia; ora conosco in parte; ma allora conoscerò pienamente, come anche sono stato perfettamente conosciuto.

For we see now through a dim window obscurely, but then face to face; now I know partially, but then I shall know according as I also have been known.

13 O ra dunque queste tre cose durano: fede, speranza, amore; ma la più grande di esse è l’amore.

And now abide faith, hope, love; these three things; and the greater of these love.
