1 « Porgete orecchio, o cieli, e io parlerò; e ascolti la terra le parole della mia bocca.

Give ear, ye heavens, and I will speak; And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth!

2 S i spanda il mio insegnamento come la pioggia, stilli la mia parola come la rugiada, come la pioggerella sopra la verdura e come un acquazzone sopra l’erba,

My doctrine shall drop as rain, My speech flow down as dew, As small rain upon the tender herb, And as showers on the grass.

3 p oiché io proclamerò il nome del Signore. Magnificate il nostro Dio!

For the name of Jehovah will I proclaim: Ascribe greatness unto our God!

4 E gli è la rocca, l’opera sua è perfetta, poiché tutte le sue vie sono giustizia. È un Dio fedele e senza iniquità. Egli è giusto e retto.

the Rock, his work is perfect, For all his ways are righteousness; A God of faithfulness without deceit, Just and right is he.

5 H anno agito perversamente contro di lui; non sono suoi figli, questi corrotti, razza storta e perversa.

They have dealt corruptly with him; Not his children's is their spot:—A crooked and perverted generation!

6 È questa la ricompensa che date al Signore, o popolo insensato e privo di saggezza? Non è lui il padre che ti ha acquistato? Non è lui che ti ha fatto e stabilito?

Do ye thus requite Jehovah, Foolish and unwise people? Is not he thy father that hath bought thee? Hath he not made thee and established thee?

7 « Ricòrdati dei giorni antichi, considera gli anni delle età passate, interroga tuo padre ed egli te lo farà conoscere, i tuoi vecchi ed essi te lo diranno.

Remember the days of old, Consider the years of generation to generation; Ask thy father, and he will shew thee; Thine elders, and they will tell thee.

8 Q uando l’Altissimo diede alle nazioni la loro eredità, quando separò i figli degli uomini, egli fissò i confini dei popoli, tenendo conto del numero dei figli d’Israele.

When the Most High assigned to the nations their inheritance, When he separated the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the peoples According to the number of the children of Israel.

9 P oiché la parte del Signore è il suo popolo, Giacobbe è la porzione della sua eredità.

For Jehovah's portion is his people; Jacob the lot of his inheritance.

10 E gli lo trovò in una terra deserta, in una solitudine piena di urli e di desolazione. Egli lo circondò, se ne prese cura, lo custodì come la pupilla dei suoi occhi.

He found him in a desert land, And in the waste, howling wilderness; He compassed him about, he watched over him, He preserved him as the apple of his eye.

11 C ome un’aquila che desta la sua nidiata, volteggia sopra i suoi piccini, spiega le sue ali, li prende e li porta sulle penne.

As the eagle stirreth up its nest, Hovereth over its young, Spreadeth out its wings, Taketh them, beareth them on its feathers,

12 I l Signore solo lo ha condotto e nessun dio straniero era con lui.

So Jehovah alone did lead him, And no strange god with him.

13 E gli lo ha fatto passare a cavallo sulle alture della terra e Israele ha mangiato il prodotto dei campi; gli ha fatto succhiare il miele che esce dalla rupe, l’olio che esce dalle rocce più dure,

He made him ride on the high places of the earth, And he ate the produce of the field; And he made him suck honey out of the crag, And oil out of the flinty rock;

14 l a crema delle vacche e il latte delle pecore. Lo ha nutrito con il grasso degli agnelli, dei montoni di Basan e dei capri, con la farina del fior fiore del grano. Tu hai bevuto il vino generoso, il sangue dell’uva.

Cream of kine, and milk of sheep, With the fat of lambs, And rams of the breed of Bashan, and he-goats, With the fat of kidneys of wheat; And thou didst drink pure wine, the blood of the grape.

15 I esurun si è fatto grasso e ha recalcitrato, si è fatto grasso, grosso e pingue, ha abbandonato il Dio che lo ha fatto e ha disprezzato la Rocca della sua salvezza.

Then Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked—Thou art waxen fat, Thou art grown thick, And thou art covered with fatness;—He gave up +God who made him, And lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

16 E ssi lo hanno fatto ingelosire con divinità straniere, lo hanno irritato con pratiche abominevoli.

They moved him to jealousy with strange gods, With abominations did they provoke him to anger.

17 H anno sacrificato a dèmoni che non sono Dio, a dèi che non avevano conosciuto, dèi nuovi, apparsi di recente, che i vostri padri non avevano temuto.

They sacrificed unto demons who are not +God; To gods whom they knew not, To new ones, who came newly up, Whom your fathers revered not.

18 H ai abbandonato la Rocca che ti diede la vita, e hai dimenticato il Dio che ti mise al mondo.

Of the Rock that begot thee wast thou unmindful, And thou hast forgotten God who brought thee forth.

19 I l Signore lo ha visto, e ha rinnegato i suoi figli e le sue figlie che l’avevano irritato;

And Jehovah saw it, and despised them, Because of the provoking of his sons and of his daughters.

20 e ha detto: “Io nasconderò loro il mio volto e starò a vedere quale sarà la loro fine; poiché sono una razza perversa, sono figli infedeli.

And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be; For they are a perverse generation, Children in whom is no faithfulness.

21 E ssi mi hanno fatto ingelosire con ciò che non è Dio, mi hanno irritato con i loro idoli vani; e io li renderò gelosi con gente che non è un popolo, li irriterò con una nazione stolta.

They have moved me to jealousy with that which is no God; They have exasperated me with their vanities; And I will move them to jealousy with that which is not a people; With a foolish nation will I provoke them to anger.

22 I nfatti il fuoco della mia ira si è acceso e divamperà fino in fondo al soggiorno dei morti; divorerà la terra e i suoi prodotti e infiammerà le fondamenta delle montagne.

For a fire is kindled in mine anger, And it shall burn into the lowest Sheol, And shall consume the earth and its produce, And set fire to the foundations of the mountains.

23 I o accumulerò disgrazie su di loro, esaurirò contro di loro tutte le mie frecce.

I will heap mischiefs upon them; Mine arrows will I spend against them.

24 E ssi saranno consumati dalla fame, divorati dalla febbre e da malattie mortali; manderò contro di loro le zanne delle belve e il veleno dei serpenti che strisciano nella polvere.

They shall be consumed with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, And with poisonous pestilence; And the teeth of beasts will I send against them, With the poison of what crawleth in the dust.

25 D i fuori la spada e di dentro il terrore spargeranno il lutto, mietendo giovani e fanciulle, lattanti e uomini canuti.

From without shall the sword bereave them, and in the chambers, terror—Both the young man and the virgin, The suckling with the man of gray hairs.

26 I o direi: ‘Li spazzerò via d’un soffio, farò sparire la loro memoria dal genere umano’,

I would say, I will scatter, I will make the remembrance of them to cease from among men,

27 s e non temessi gli insulti del nemico e che i loro avversari, illudendosi, fossero indotti a dire: ‘È stata la nostra potente mano che ha fatto tutto questo, e non il Signore ’”.

If I did not fear provocation from the enemy, Lest their adversaries should misunderstand it, Lest they should say, Our hand is high, and Jehovah has not done all this.

28 P oiché è una nazione che ha perduto il senno e non c’è intelligenza in loro.

For they are a nation void of counsel, And understanding is not in them.

29 S e fossero savi, lo capirebbero e considererebbero la fine che li aspetta.

Oh that they had been wise! they would have understood this, They would have considered their latter end!

30 C ome potrebbe uno solo inseguirne mille, e due metterne in fuga diecimila, se la loro Rocca non li avesse venduti, se il Signore non li avesse dati in mano al nemico?

How could one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Were it not that their Rock had sold them, And Jehovah had delivered them up?

31 P oiché la loro rocca non è come la nostra Rocca; i nostri stessi nemici ne sono giudici;

For their rock is not as our Rock: Let our enemies themselves be judges.

32 m a la loro vigna viene dalla vigna di Sodoma e dalle campagne di Gomorra; le loro uve sono uve avvelenate, i loro grappoli, amari;

For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, And of the fields of Gomorrah: Their grapes are grapes of poison, Bitter are their clusters;

33 i l loro vino è tossico di serpenti, un crudele veleno di vipere.

Their wine is the poison of dragons, And the cruel venom of vipers.

34 « “Tutto questo non è forse riposto presso di me, sigillato nei miei tesori?

Is not this hidden with me, Sealed up among my treasures?

35 A me la vendetta e la retribuzione, quando il loro piede vacillerà! Poiché il giorno della sventura è vicino e ciò che li aspetta non tarderà”.

Vengeance is mine, and recompense, For the time when their foot shall slip. For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things that shall come upon them make haste.

36 S ì, il Signore giudicherà il suo popolo, ma avrà pietà dei suoi servi quando vedrà che la forza è sparita e che non rimane più tra di loro né schiavo né libero.

For Jehovah will judge his people, And shall repent in favour of his servants; When he seeth that power is gone, And there is none shut up or left.

37 A llora egli dirà: “Dove sono i loro dèi, la rocca nella quale confidavano,

And he shall say, Where are their gods, Their rock in whom they trusted,

38 g li dèi che mangiavano il grasso dei loro sacrifici e bevevano il vino delle loro libazioni? Si alzino loro a soccorrervi, a coprirvi con la loro protezione!

Who ate the fat of their sacrifices, drank the wine of their drink-offering? Let them rise up and help you, That there may be a protection over you.

39 O ra vedete che io solo sono Dio e che non vi è altro dio accanto a me. Io faccio morire e faccio vivere, ferisco e risano, e nessuno può liberare dalla mia mano.

See now that I, I am HE, And there is no god with me; I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal, And there is none that delivereth out of my hand,

40 S ì, io alzo la mia mano al cielo e dico: ‘Com’è vero che io vivo in eterno,

For I lift up my hand to the heavens, and say, I live for ever!

41 q uando affilerò la mia spada folgorante e la mia mano si leverà a giudicare, farò vendetta dei miei nemici e darò ciò che si meritano a quelli che mi odiano.

If I have sharpened my gleaming sword, And my hand take hold of judgment, I will render vengeance to mine adversaries, And will recompense them that hate me.

42 I nebrierò di sangue le mie frecce, del sangue degli uccisi e dei prigionieri; la mia spada divorerà la carne, le teste dei condottieri nemici’”.

Mine arrows will I make drunk with blood, And my sword shall devour flesh; with the blood of the slain and of the captives, With the head of the princes of the enemy.

43 N azioni, cantate le lodi del suo popolo! Poiché il Signore vendica il sangue dei suoi servi, fa ricadere la sua vendetta sopra i suoi avversari, ma si mostra propizio alla sua terra, al suo popolo».

Shout for joy, ye nations, with his people, For he avengeth the blood of his servants, And rendereth vengeance to his enemies, And maketh atonement for his land, for his people.

44 E Mosè venne con Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e pronunciò in presenza del popolo tutte le parole di questo cantico.

And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he and Hoshea the son of Nun.

45 E quando Mosè ebbe finito di pronunciare tutte queste parole davanti a tutto Israele, disse loro:

And when Moses had ended speaking all these words to all Israel,

46 « Prendete a cuore tutte le parole che oggi pronuncio solennemente davanti a voi. Le prescriverete ai vostri figli, affinché abbiano cura di mettere in pratica tutte le parole di questa legge.

he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words that I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to take heed to do, all the words of this law.

47 P oiché questa non è una parola senza valore per voi: anzi, è la vostra vita; per questa parola prolungherete i vostri giorni nel paese del quale andate a prendere possesso, passando il Giordano». Mosè riceve l’ordine di salire sul monte Nebo

For it is no vain word for you, but it is your life, and through this word ye shall prolong your days on the land whereunto ye pass over the Jordan to possess it.

48 I n quello stesso giorno il Signore parlò a Mosè e disse:

And Jehovah spoke to Moses that same day, saying,

49 « Sali su questo monte di Abarim, sul monte Nebo, che è nel paese di Moab, di fronte a Gerico, e guarda il paese di Canaan, che io do in possesso ai figli d’Israele.

Go up into this mountain Abarim, mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, which is opposite Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession,

50 T u morirai sul monte sul quale stai per salire e sarai riunito al tuo popolo, come tuo fratello Aaronne è morto sul monte Or ed è stato riunito al suo popolo,

and die on the mountain whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy peoples, as Aaron thy brother died on mount Hor, and was gathered unto his peoples;

51 p erché mi siete stati infedeli in mezzo ai figli d’Israele, presso le acque di Meriba, a Cades, nel deserto di Sin, in quanto non mi avete santificato in mezzo ai figli d’Israele.

because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye hallowed me not in the midst of the children of Israel.

52 T u vedrai il paese davanti a te, ma là, nel paese che io do ai figli d’Israele, non entrerai».

For thou shalt see the land before; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.
