1 P ortanto, que diremos do nosso antepassado Abraão?

What shall we say then that Abraham our father according to flesh has found?

2 S e de fato Abraão foi justificado pelas obras, ele tem do que se gloriar, mas não diante de Deus.

For if Abraham has been justified on the principle of works, he has whereof to boast: but not before God;

3 Q ue diz a Escritura? “Abraão creu em Deus, e isso lhe foi creditado como justiça.”

for what does the scripture say? And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.

4 O ra, o salário do homem que trabalha não é considerado como favor, mas como dívida.

Now to him that works the reward is not reckoned as of grace, but of debt:

5 T odavia, àquele que não trabalha, mas confia em Deus, que justifica o ímpio, sua fé lhe é creditada como justiça.

but to him who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness.

6 D avi diz a mesma coisa, quando fala da felicidade do homem a quem Deus credita justiça independente de obras:

Even as David also declares the blessedness of the man to whom God reckons righteousness without works:

7 “ Como são felizes aqueles que têm suas transgressões perdoadas, cujos pecados são apagados!

Blessed whose lawlessnesses have been forgiven, and whose sins have been covered:

8 C omo é feliz aquele a quem o Senhor não atribui culpa!”

blessed man to whom Lord shall not at all reckon sin.

9 D estina-se esta felicidade apenas aos circuncisos ou também aos incircuncisos? Já dissemos que, no caso de Abraão, a fé lhe foi creditada como justiça.

this blessedness then on the circumcision, or also on the uncircumcision? For we say that faith has been reckoned to Abraham as righteousness.

10 S ob quais circunstâncias? Antes ou depois de ter sido circuncidado? Não foi depois, mas antes!

How then has it been reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

11 A ssim ele recebeu a circuncisão como sinal, como selo da justiça que ele tinha pela fé, quando ainda não fora circuncidado. Portanto, ele é o pai de todos os que crêem, sem terem sido circuncidados, a fim de que a justiça fosse creditada também a eles;

And he received sign of circumcision seal of the righteousness of faith which being in uncircumcision, that he might be father of all them that believe being in uncircumcision, that righteousness might be reckoned to them also;

12 e é igualmente o pai dos circuncisos que não somente são circuncisos, mas também andam nos passos da fé que teve nosso pai Abraão antes de passar pela circuncisão.

and father of circumcision, not only to those who are of circumcision, but to those also who walk in the steps of the faith, during uncircumcision, of our father Abraham.

13 N ão foi mediante a Lei que Abraão e a sua descendência receberam a promessa de que ele seria herdeiro do mundo, mas mediante a justiça que vem da fé.

For not by law that the promise was to Abraham, or to his seed, that he should be heir of world, but by righteousness of faith.

14 P ois se os que vivem pela Lei são herdeiros, a fé não tem valor, e a promessa é inútil;

For if they which of law be heirs, faith is made vain, and the promise made of no effect.

15 p orque a Lei produz a ira. E onde não há Lei, não há transgressão.

For law works wrath; but where no law is neither transgression.

16 P ortanto, a promessa vem pela fé, para que seja de acordo com a graça e seja assim garantida a toda a descendência de Abraão; não apenas aos que estão sob o regime da Lei, mas também aos que têm a fé que Abraão teve. Ele é o pai de todos nós.

Therefore on the principle of faith, that according to grace, in order to the promise being sure to all the seed, not to that only which of the law, but to that also which of Abraham's faith, who is father of us all,

17 C omo está escrito: “Eu o constituí pai de muitas nações”. Ele é nosso pai aos olhos de Deus, em quem creu, o Deus que dá vida aos mortos e chama à existência coisas que não existem, como se existissem.

(according as it is written, I have made thee father of many nations,) before the God whom he believed, who quickens the dead, and calls the things which be not as being;

18 A braão, contra toda esperança, em esperança creu, tornando-se assim pai de muitas nações, como foi dito a seu respeito: “Assim será a sua descendência”.

who against hope believed in hope to his becoming father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be:

19 S em se enfraquecer na fé, reconheceu que o seu corpo já estava sem vitalidade, pois já contava cerca de cem anos de idade, e que também o ventre de Sara já estava sem vigor.

and not being weak in faith, he considered not his own body already become dead, being about a hundred years old, and the deadening of Sarah's womb,

20 M esmo assim não duvidou nem foi incrédulo em relação à promessa de Deus, mas foi fortalecido em sua fé e deu glória a Deus,

and hesitated not at the promise of God through unbelief; but found strength in faith, giving glory to God;

21 e stando plenamente convencido de que ele era poderoso para cumprir o que havia prometido.

and being fully persuaded that what he has promised he is able also to do;

22 E m conseqüência, “isso lhe foi creditado como justiça”.

wherefore also it was reckoned to him as righteousness.

23 A s palavras “lhe foi creditado” não foram escritas apenas para ele,

Now it was not written on his account alone that it was reckoned to him,

24 m as também para nós, a quem Deus creditará justiça, a nós, que cremos naquele que ressuscitou dos mortos a Jesus, nosso Senhor.

but on ours also, to whom, believing on him who has raised from among dead Jesus our Lord,

25 E le foi entregue à morte por nossos pecados e ressuscitado para nossa justificação.

who has been delivered for our offences and has been raised for our justification, it will be reckoned.
