1 T he sayings of Solomon: A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.

Ko nga whakatauki a Horomona. He tama whakaaro nui, ka koa te papa: tena he tama kuware, he utanga nui mo tona whaea.

2 R iches taken by wrong-doing do no good, but doing what is right and good saves from death.

Kahore he rawa o nga taonga o te kino: ma te tika ia te oranga ake i te mate.

3 T he Lord will not let those who are right with Him go hungry, but He puts to one side the desire of the sinful.

E kore a Ihowa e tuku i te wairua o te tangata tika kia hemokai: ka pana atu ia e ia te hiahia o te hunga kino.

4 H e who works with a lazy hand is poor, but the hand of the hard worker brings riches.

He rawakore te tukunga iho o te ringa ngehe: ma te ringa kakama ia ka hua te taonga.

5 A son who gathers in summer is wise, but a son who sleeps during gathering time brings shame.

He kohi raumati ta tama ngakau mahara: he whakama ia te rawa a tama moe ngahuru.

6 G ood things are given to those who are right with God, but the mouth of the sinful hides trouble.

He manaaki kei te tumuaki o te tangata tika: he arita ia kei te waha o te tangata kino, taupoki ai.

7 T hose who are right with God are remembered with honor, but the name of the sinful will waste away.

8 T he wise in heart will receive teaching, but a fast talking fool will become nothing.

He ngakau whakaaro, ka tahuritia te whakahau: he ngutu wairangi, ka hinga.

9 H e who is right in his walk is sure in his steps, but he who takes the wrong way will be found out.

10 H e who winks the eye causes trouble, and a fast talking fool will become nothing.

11 T he mouth of the one who is right with God is a well of life, but the mouth of the sinful hides trouble.

He puna ora te mangai o te tangata tika; tena ko te mangai o te hunga kino, ka taupokina tera e te mahi nanakia.

12 H ate starts fights, but love covers all sins.

Ko to te mauahara he whakaoho i nga totohe; ko te aroha he hipoki i nga he katoa.

13 W isdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding, but a stick is for the back of him who has no understanding.

14 W ise men store up learning, but the foolish will be destroyed with their mouths.

Rongoa ai te hunga whakaaro nui i te matauranga: he whakangaromanga ia kei te hori tonu, te mangai o te wairangi.

15 T he riches of a rich man are his strength, but the need of the poor is what destroys them.

16 T he pay earned by those who are right with God is life, but the sinful are paid by being punished.

Ko te mahi a te tangata tika e ahu ana ki te ora: ko nga hua o te kino ki te hara.

17 H e who listens to teaching is on the path of life, but he who will not listen to strong words goes the wrong way.

18 H e who hides hate has lying lips, and he who talks to hurt people is a fool.

Ko te tangata e huna ana i te mauahara he ngutu teka: a he kuware te tangata e whakapuaki ana i te ngautuara.

19 T he one who talks much will for sure sin, but he who is careful what he says is wise.

E kore nga kupu maha e hapa i te kino; he mahara nui ia te tangata he ngutu kokopi nei ona.

20 T he tongue of those who are right with God is like fine silver, but the heart of the sinful is not worth much.

He hiriwa pai rawa te arero o te tangata tika; ko te ngakau o te hunga kino, he hauwarea rawa.

21 T he lips of those who are right with God feed many, but fools die for want of understanding.

He tokomaha e whangaia ana e nga ngutu o te tangata tika; ka mate ia te hunga kuware, he kore no te ngakau mahara.

22 T he good that comes from the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow to it.

23 D oing wrong is like play to a fool, but a man of understanding has wisdom.

Hei takaro ma te wairangi te mahi he; ma te tangata matau ia ko te whakaaro nui.

24 W hat the sinful man is afraid of will come upon him, and what is wanted by the man who is right with God will be given to him.

Ko ta te tangata kino i wehi ai ka tae ano ki a ia; a, ko ta te hunga tika i hiahia ai, ka homai.

25 W hen the storm passes, the sinful man is no more, but the man who is right with God has a place to stand forever.

Pahure rawa ake te tukauati kua kore te hunga kino: tena ko te tangata tika he turanga pumau tera.

26 L ike sour wine to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is the lazy one to those who send him.

He winika ki nga niho, he paowa ki nga kanohi: koia ano te mangere ki ona kaiunga.

27 T he fear of the Lord makes life longer, but the years of the sinful will be cut off.

28 T he hope of those who are right with God is joy, but the hope of the sinful comes to nothing.

Tumanako atu te hunga tika, koa iho; tumanako atu te hunga kino, ngaro iho.

29 T he way of the Lord is a strong-place to those who are faithful, but it destroys those who do wrong.

He kaha mo te tangata tika ta Ihowa ara; he whakangaromanga ia mo nga kaimahi i te kino.

30 T hose who are right with God will never be shaken, but the sinful will not live in the land.

E kore te tangata tika e whakangaueuetia a ake ake; e kore ia e nohoia e te hunga kino te whenua.

31 T he mouth of those who are right with God flows with wisdom, but the sinful tongue will be stopped.

Ko te mangai o te tangata tika hua ana te whakaaro nui; ka tapahia ia te arero whanoke.

32 T he lips of those who are right with God speak what is pleasing to others, but the mouth of the sinful speaks only what is bad.
