Look away from him that he may rest, Till like a hired man he finishes his day.

7 » El árbol, aunque lo corten, aún tiene la esperanza de volver a retoñar, de que no falten sus renuevos.

“For there is hope for a tree, If it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And that its tender shoots will not cease.

8 A unque en la tierra envejezca su raíz y muera su tronco en el polvo,

Though its root may grow old in the earth, And its stump may die in the ground,

9 a l percibir el agua reverdecerá y hará copa como una planta nueva.

Yet at the scent of water it will bud And bring forth branches like a plant.

10 E n cambio el hombre muere y desaparece. Perece el hombre, ¿y dónde estará?

But man dies and is laid away; Indeed he breathes his last And where is he?

11 C omo se evaporan las aguas en el mar, y el río se agota y se seca,

As water disappears from the sea, And a river becomes parched and dries up,

12 a sí el hombre yace y no vuelve a levantarse. Mientras exista el cielo, no despertará ni se levantará de su sueño.

So man lies down and does not rise. Till the heavens are no more, They will not awake Nor be roused from their sleep.

13 ¡ Ojalá me escondieras en el seol, me ocultaras hasta apaciguarse tu ira! ¡Ojalá me pusieras plazo para acordarte de mí!

“Oh, that You would hide me in the grave, That You would conceal me until Your wrath is past, That You would appoint me a set time, and remember me!

14 E l hombre que muere, ¿volverá a vivir? Todos los días de mi vida esperaré, hasta que llegue mi liberación.

If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, Till my change comes.

15 E ntonces llamarás y yo te responderé; tendrás afecto a la obra de tus manos.

You shall call, and I will answer You; You shall desire the work of Your hands.

16 P ero ahora cuentas mis pasos y no das tregua a mi pecado;

For now You number my steps, But do not watch over my sin.

17 t ienes sellada en un saco mi transgresión, encerrada mi iniquidad.

My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And You cover my iniquity.

18 » Un monte derrumbado ciertamente se deshace, las peñas son removidas de su lugar

“But as a mountain falls and crumbles away, And as a rock is moved from its place;

19 y las piedras se desgastan con el agua que impetuosa arrastra el polvo de la tierra. De igual manera, tú haces que perezca la esperanza del hombre.

As water wears away stones, And as torrents wash away the soil of the earth; So You destroy the hope of man.

20 P ara siempre prevalecerás sobre él, y él se irá; demudarás su rostro y lo despedirás.

You prevail forever against him, and he passes on; You change his countenance and send him away.

21 S i sus hijos reciben honores, no lo sabrá; si son humillados, no se enterará.

His sons come to honor, and he does not know it; They are brought low, and he does not perceive it.

22 P ero sentirá el dolor de su propia carne, y se afligirá en él su alma.»

But his flesh will be in pain over it, And his soul will mourn over it.”
